The Iberian Peninsula or Hispania has known many peoples coming to

settle and live here, including the Celts, Jews, Romans, Visigoths, and
Moors. Over a thousand years ago, this stew of peoples lived in what was
the Golden Age of Spain in a pluralistic and tolerant society, with a lot of
acculturation taking place. Then, in less than a hundred years leading up to
the end of the fifteenth century, the Catholic Church and the Spanish
Inquisition had established a reign of terror and intolerance leading to the
final expulsion of the Jews. In this land with it’s multi–cultural and
interesting mosaic of peoples the Parra surname is indicated to have
originated in Spain at Castille, with a branch of the family going to
Extremadura. The next step or migration for Parras was in the “desarrollo”
or unraveling of Extremadura’s population by those headed to the new world
along with the Spanish conquistadores and colonizers. Interestingly, the
Parra surname was identified as being a Sephardic or Jewish name by the
Holy Office of the Catholic Church in Spain1. In Spanish parra means a vine
such as in grapevine, but there is apparently also a different meaning.
All the oldest and best manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible contain on
every page, beside the Text (which is arranged in two or more columns), a
varying number of lines of small writing, distributed between the upper
and lower margins. This smaller writing is called the Massorah Magna or
Great Massorah, while that in the side margins and between the columns
is called the Massorah Parra or Small Massorah.
"The word Massorah is from the root maser, to deliver something into the
hand of another, so as to commit it to his trust. Hence the name is given to
the small writing referred to, because it contains information necessary to
those into whose trust the Sacred Text was committed, so that they might
transcribe it, and hand it down correctly.

The Inquisition had been eliminating large groups of Jews and in 1492
Jews were finally forced out of Spain, some going to Amsterdam, Portugal
and others to the New World, even though it was forbidden. The Parra name
is indeed found in Inquisition documents and on the rolls of Jewish peoples
whom had gone to Amsterdam, the Dutch colonies and in Mexico. While the
memory of our journey, migrations or escape from the Inquisition is no
longer known to us, our name can be found in various documents, which I
am finding and still researching. Conversos and marranos, as Jews could be
called, were not too popular in predominantly Catholic Espana. Regardless,
they (Jews) penetrated that society even into the courtyards of royalty. It
must also be understood or recognized that in many cases you had related
family members on both or either side of the river, so to speak, some very
Catholic, with some of these even being curas or priests and some crypto or
hidden Jews, observing Judaism only as their circumstances or situations
might safely allow. According to Separdim.com’s Heraldic information on
conversos (the converted), “Many Separdim families were enobled after
1492-1497, so that some crests will contain Christian symbology.” Families
can have more than one crest for a number of reasons.” Sometimes they
were based on individual’s achievements or service.

Recently, (Sept. 17, 2002) I received information from an individual

whom has indicated they have spent some time near Casa Grandes,
apparently doing archaeological and genealogical work, and discovering that
there was indeed a colony of Sephardics (Conversos or Crypto-Jews) near
that area (by El Valle de San Buenaventura at Barrio Carvajal), with the
Carvajals and Parras being very prominent in the area. My Parra ancestors
nonetheless, do appear regularly in the Catholic Church records of
baptismals and those kinds of documents in the southwest, thus probably or
generally in good standing as Catolicos, at least in this part of the New
World. (I honestly cannot say that they were all particularly good loyal
churchgoers, however, having a belief that El Dio is supreme and that in
your daily life following His Commandments and being good to your
fellowman is probably most important- The Parra’s shared or gave freely of
their bounty). Shown below is a special photo of an old, very large beautiful
statue that has been lovingly preserved, it once belonging to my Great
Grandparents Canuto y Juanita (Olguin) Parra.

Adventurous Spanish individuals, and others including Portuguese,

Italians and Greeks and whole groups of people including families and
neighborhoods (As evidenced by the Extremadura exodus-which included
Cortez and Pizzaro) boarded those sea-going vessels of the, then mighty,
Spanish Monarchy and set forth to seek their own piece of El Dorado, in the
exciting New World. Most likely never alone, some close-knit groups have
stayed together until this day and age, as I will endeavor to tell in this, our
family’s story.

The first Parra’s into Nuevo Mexico (New Mexico) were the
conquistadores Alonso Parra Martin and Alonso Parra Rodriguez (Please
keep in mind that in the Spanish system of surnames the father’s surname is
listed in the middle, unlike our American way- thus the last is the mother’s)
who served under Captain Francisco Vasquez de Coronado whose expedition
explored Nuevo Mexico, Arizona and went as far north as Kansas during
1540 to 1542.1 The next appears to be Gregorio Parra Chacon, the son of
Juan de la Parra.2 (Juan de la Parra a Spanish captain of the Indehe in 1582
commissioned Antonio de Luxan in 1582 for the expedition of Antonio de
Espejo, the taking of native captives (slaves).3 Gregorio was a soldier in

Onate’s colonization expedition, which celebrated a Thanksgiving on April
30 of 1598 having finally arrived at Nuevo Mexico along the shores of the
Rio Grande, it is believed in the vicinity of San Elizario, which is just east of
El Paso del Norte. At the San Elizario mission/church a group of Parras is
listed amongst the earliest members of the congregation. Our ancestors
settled along the few Spanish presidios and parajes along the Camino Real
near the Rio Grande. With the passage of time, certain Hispanic families,
with very beautiful Spanish surnames, have changed their family names. In
our family, like the de la Penas and the de la Torres, the “de la” has been
omitted, sometimes by the Priests or Curas who would unwittingly drop the
de la on the children’s names while filling out the baptismal certificates and
church records and then probably in part because the “New Conquerors” the
Anglos on the whole failed to understand or appreciate the Spanish system
of naming individuals, coupled with the perceived complexity of very long
names so common to our ancestor’s culture. I myself have been guilty of
trying to modify a person’s name, to our American way. I had occasion to
ask an adult Mexican student how he preferred to be called, Juan or Jose, at
the beginning of his prodigious name, with a Maria to boot, and went on to
my amazement, and in my eyes saw a definite need for some simplification.
He replied, “I prefer being called Juan Jose”. For the first time I believe it
dawned upon me that I was imposing a culture standard that I had grown up
with. How quickly and how very rudely, without arbitration and sensitivity,
we try to change something so very basic to a human life or so important as
another’s precious culture, that is their given name, and very religious at
that. Well, we do it innocently and mean no harm, but step on toes we do,
nonetheless. Why did I suddenly learn a great lesson? I am sure I had done
this before in teaching children, but this was an adult! I was at his level, age
wise. He knew what he preferred and I received an overdue message!

In a brief look at the research of others, I have also read that the Parras
were established very early throughout the Americas. A Dona Ana de la
Parra from Madrid who married a Don Francisco Delgadillo immigrated to
Mexico in 1585. Their grandson, Alonso Davalos Bracamonte was granted
the title of Conde (Count) de Miravalle in 1690. Dona Catalina de la Parra
who was born in Alpechin, married Don Diego Bermudez and their son
whom moved to the Indies and later became the Mayor of the Cabildo de
Lima in Peru where he married and died. There are many other Parras names
I have found such as Samuel de La Parra who was amongst the original
settlers who settled in Suriname for the Dutch and was listed amongst the
important Jewish persons who owned plantations there.
I would also like to share that our surname is found in the data base for
Vasco (Basque) surnames and documents that I have only begun study,
through the Spanish Archives. Our ancestory or branch of Parra’s also has
Samaniego blood. The Samaniegos are a Basque people. My Great Great
Grandfather Don Carmel Dominguez Parra born in Dona Ana in about 1830,
married Senorita Francisca Ponce Samaniego, child of Pedro Samaniego and
Isabel Ponce also of Dona Ana. Thus, I and my children carry Rh negative
blood, or the Rhesus Negative types, which is the highest frequency blood
type of those Basque people.4 My daughter Julie has experienced or had to
be treated to prevent the serious and often fatal blue baby syndrome or
haemolytic disease or condition, caused when a Rhesus negative mother
bears a child of a Rhesus positive father, affecting the second or subsequent
pregnancy.

According to Fray Angelico Chavez, Origins of New Mexico Families, a

Juan de la Parra was at Rio Abajo before 1639. Pascual Cobos de la Parra
escaped from the Pueblo Indian rebellion in 1680. He arrived at El Paso del
Norte, “passed muster (was called or identified on the roll of the refugees)
on foot and without any arms, with a family of 9 persons- a wife, mother,
brothers, and nephews. He did not know how to sign.”6 A Gregorio Cobos de
la Parra, a native New Mexican, who had moved to Parral in Mexico where
he had married, returned in 1681 to join the Otermin Campaign against the
Indians, who had driven his familia and fellow Hispanics south to El Paso
del Norte, then a part of Nuevo Mexico, and which is now actually Juarez in
the present day State of Chihuahua. “On the said day (30th day of September
1681), there enlisted as a soldier of the presidio Gregorio Cobos de la Parra a
native of El Parral, who has a distinguishing marks, a slender figure, swarthy
complexion, black eyes, partly gray hair, and is 40 years of age. He received
the salary from his majesty in one payment like the rest, of which a record
was made.”7 Fray Chavez research had indicated that he was the only former
New Mexican who volunteered for the campaign. For family history,
geographic and information purposes it should be noted that the City of
Chihuahua had not yet been established at that time. Fray Chavez’ last entry
on the Parra origins indicates Antonio de la Parra was living at the area of
the Pueblo de Casas Grandes (AKA Casas Grandes Viejo) also at 1681.8 It
was this same Antonio, among others, who contributed 10 head of cattle to

feed the refugees at El Paso del Norte after Otermin had on the 15th day of
June 1681, ordered the Maestre de Campo Pedro de Leiva to go to the said
district of Casas Grandes.9 My continuing family search has discovered a
mining record10 that in 1682 a group of people, including Carvajals, from
Old Cerrillos went to complete the establishment or founding of the
community of Pueblo de Casas Grandes, lured by mining discoveries and
very likely Antonio de la Parra whom was a relative and true friend. My
family has been associated with the Carvajals for a very long time, indeed.
We have found possible and some definite distant Carvajal relatives of the
Parra’s going back to Espana, including Juan Manuel Parra y Carvajal, a
knight of the noble order of Carlos III11, to Pueblo de Casas Grandes in the
Spanish Royal Province of Nueva Galicia (later to become the State of
Chihuahua, Mexico), then to Santa Rita, Nuevo Mexico and onto California.
The Carvajals, from Spain, were identified as crypto-Jewish. Luis Rodriguez
de Carvajal arrived in the New World at Tampico MX in 1580, fleeing the
heat of the Inquisition along with his Jewish parents, siblings and his famous
uncle Luis Carvajal, a conquistador, who bore the title of “Admiral” and
later became the governor of Nuevo Leon, a province of the Viceroyalty of
New Spain. Tragically, Luis Rodriguez de Carvajal ended up being burned at
the stake in Mexico City by the Inquisition, along with his mother and three
sisters for his judaizing on December 8, of 159612.. Some of the Parras and
their relatives also lived at the Real de Corralitos near Pueblo de Casa
Grandes, which was an old mining camp and at the mining district of
Galeana. Additionally, Parras and their relatives were living at the place
called the Real de Barranco Colorado and the Presidio de San Felipe de
Janos (AKA Janos), Chihuahua, which was the site of a Spanish smelter for
copper ore, which was brought by mule train caravans from the Spanish
copper mine at Santa Rita, NM on a trail along the Burro Mts. Before all
this, the Parra’s had migrated north following or in step with the newest
discoveries and colonization advancements, through the mining country of
Zacatecas, like Juan de Onate’s family, whom later was to become governor
of Nuevo Mexico. Eventually our family reached the Valle of San
Bartolomeo at Santa Barbara, a rich mining district of antiquity. The Parra’s

de la Parra and Florentina Maria Parra y Borja. (females are often members of the various orders even to this

always had certain mining interests since their arrival in the New World,
continuing to the last century, as years ago I remember reading a particular
legal notice in the local Newspaper, the Deming Headlight. It advised heirs
of Albino and Julian Parra of the intention of a mining company to begin a
mining operation in the area of mines near Fluorite Ridge, that were once
owned and worked by these Parra’s.

My grandfather Albino Parra also had an interest in a mine in the south

end of the Black Range in the Teel Mines vicinity, via Royal John Mines
Road. I recall a story told me by my own father of a certain bear scaring my
grandmother, Maria Fabiana Galindo Parra on a visit of long ago to that
mine. Needless to say she never returned to the vicinity. I her grandchild,
however love to visit the tall cool pines of the Bear’s old den, recalling the
simple stories or tales I used to hear of my ancestors, nearby where a cabin
was built by my family’s friend, a gentleman called John Pearson.

Part of our family and many relatives were eventually able to return to
New Mexico, after the Reconquest of New Mexico. It should be
remembered, that this region was all in the Spanish kingdom from the 1500’s
until 1821 and then for just about a mere 25 years a sovereign nation
(Mexico), wherein its citizens went freely back and forth with no
international border or boundary. Nonetheless, my family had important or
close family in the Pueblo de Casas Grandes area, which they paid perhaps
annual visits. They traveled along the Camino Real briefly towards El Paso
del Norte and then probably west upon a failed trail or route once blazed to
Sonora, but then turned south at the The Presidio de San Felipe de Janos to
Santa Rita Trail and continued down to Pueblo de Casa Grandes. I have
found where apparently a Parra child who was born in Nuevo Mexico then
subsequently taken for baptismal at San Antonio de Padua church in Pueblo
de Casa Grandes in Old Mexico. The explanation is probably simple. They
went to be with their close family. Family is still very important in our
Hispanic Culture. When living in Northern New Mexico ourselves, we
would bring our children to southern New Mexico for baptismal and first
communions near the grandparents, and the numerous aunts, uncles and
cousins, and compadres that we all might share in the special religious
ceremonials.
When they came back to Nuevo Mexico our branch of the family seems
to have mainly settled in the region above El Paso del Norte, in the Dona
Ana area, with some exceptions no doubt- I have found a number of Parras
once lived at Tome, NM. Nonetheless, my close ancestors probably lived at
or near Dona Ana until our family began a new migration (it appears the
family probably moved after great flooding in that valley in 1865, when the
river completely changed course on the then un-dammed Rio Grande) to a
valley called the Mimbres, the Spanish name for the Desert Willow, which
grows along the little river of the same name. Thus, our ancestors, probably
with Don Carmel Parra in lead of his family and his closest kin, were also
amongst the early settlers of the Mimbres Valley, with our family selecting a
very nice ranch site along the Mimbres River and then building their homes
atop the natural terrace of a hill, high and beyond the river waters, at San
Ysidro, in what became known as La Cienega de Los Parras. Canuto Parra
began his mile and a half Parra ditch in 1886 according to historical
records.13

This tall and very old San Ysidro was owned

by my Great Grandparents Canuto Parra y
Juanita Olguin, of San Ysidro at the Parra
Rancho. On San Ysidro’s day, April 04 of
each year it was carried in the labores (fields)
and along the acequias, in a procession of
family and neighbors, led by the local Cura
(priest), whom blessed the fields and prayed
for plentiful water and crops. A celebration
followed and then the yearly spring cleaning
of the acequias began.

13 Berry, David and Susan, “Settlement and surface Water Use of the Upper Mimbres Valley 1869-1907-
independently contracted and funded by New Mexico State Engineer Office, June 1, 1984.
Later, San Ysidro became known as Swarts or Swartz. Antonio Parra
married Camila Swartz and thus we became primos. The Parras and other
families, which had been forced to retreat at the Pueblo Indian Rebellion,
going or perhaps I should say retreating to the El Paso del Norte area, and
some continued further south into the interior. Some of the the Parra’s
remained close, searching areas of mineral interest like those in the Casas
Grandes area, but eventually at least some Parra’s worked their way back up
to New Mexico, after the reconquest led by De Vargas. Interestingly, De
Vargas was a direct descendent of the landowner and employer of the
farmer’s patron saint, San Ysidro el Labrador, so beloved in New Mexico.
The Parras, our kin and neighbors, in colonizing the Mimbres Valley north
of El Cerro de Los Remedios or Cookes Peak, usually came by way of Santa
Rita, where we had kin or Dona Ana in the Rio Grande Valley, maybe even
following parts of the old Butterfield Trail and a trail blazed directly through
and past Cooke’s Town and on up the hills going generally north, directly to
the mines of Santa Rita, Fort Webster and the ranchos of the Mimbres. The
trail is clearly shown on the Barlett-Conde and Gray boundaries map from
the New York Illustrated News of June 14, 185314 and then again on the U.S.
surveyor Generals Office 1883 Powell and Kingman’s Map of Southwestern
New Mexico (I see/note a portion of my grandfather surname almost hidden
by wear at the crease, exactly at his Rancho’s location), drawn by the
draftsman E. Kingman, Jr. and copyrighted in 1883. It was from the north
(and the San Ysidro vicinity along the Mimbres River) that Albino Olguin
Parra came along the trail and across the mountains upon horseback to dance
up a “fierce Mexican dust-storm” at a place my father called “La Grafica”.
My abuelita (Grandma Faviana Rodriguez Galindo) was temporarily living
up here in the mining towns of Jose and Cooke’s town. According to my Tio
Merejildo Quiroz, whom she helped to raise after his father Proto passed on
at the Parra Rancho* in his childhood, my grandmother often recalled
working for the Charles Poe family who owned a store and Mr. Poe serving
as Postmaster from June 28, 1893 to Sept. 28, 1908.15

Marrujos (also sometimes spelled Marrufo), Martinez, Orcasitas, Oroscos,

Swartz, Trujillos, Valencias and many more. My research, in previously
cited sources, indicates that most of my closer relative’s surnames are also of
Sephardic heritage or origin! Certainly our neighbor’s names included
prominent Spanish family names, such as the Caballeros, the Carrillos and
the Roybals, and then the uncommon such as Noreros with Italian origins
and the Perraults, apparently French by way of Canada.

I have, but to listen to the Spanish conversations of my aged father and

certain old vecinos, of the Mimbres, speaking amongst themselves, to catch
remnants of archaic Spanish, fitting neither the Spanish spoken in Mexico or
in modern Spain. When we ask for a ball-point writing pen in Spanish, we
say pluma (as opposed to a newer word- boligrafo), still stuck in the inkwell
times of the plumes of yesteryear. I have also discovered that some of our
words or language is actually, Ladino (Separdic Jewish). The following is a
great example of Ladino and our pronunciations. Kuando mas eskurese es
para amaneser. (When the sky darkens, it heralds dawn’s arrival.) I loved it
when I found my ancestors names and baptismals written in an elegantly
beautiful olde Spanish handwriting of inkwell and plume by the cura (priest)
descendent of the conquistador Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca- Presbitero D.
Jose de Jesus Cabeza de Vaca, whose name I had first encountered in that
book by Fabiola Cabeza de Vaca in her “We Fed them Cactus”. This good
priest was a student of the great New Mexico priest Don Antonio Martinez
(originally Antonio Jose Martin), who eventually was excommunicated by
the French Archbishop Juan Lamy, as the Hispanos called him. Originally
we were under the Diocese of Durango, but when the Anglos came with
their “Manifesty Destiny” appropriating lands all the way to California in
their bold greediness. Our United States President Ulysses S. Grant said it
best in his, Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant (New York, 1885), pages 22-24 quote on the
annexation of Texas and Mexican War “For myself, I was bitterly opposed
to the measure, and to this day regard the war [with Mexico] which
resulted as one of the most unjust ever waged by a stronger against a
weaker nation. It was an instance of a republic following the bad
example of European monarchies, in not considering justice in their
desire to acquire additional territory.” The Catholic Diocese boundaries
also changed, bringing one vacillating French priest conspiratorially, I
believe, to serve in the leadership role with his “cher ami” (dear friend)
whom I will not even honor with his name in this, our story. Please read the
Fray Angelico Chavez, whom I have found in his writings also had Carvajal
ancestry, story of Padre Martinez of Taos, NM in “But Time and Chance”.
The Cura Cabeza de Vaca, would eventually go to Asencion, Chih. Mexico,
along with Hispanic people from Mesilla near Las Cruces, who left after
political disagreement ended in bloodshed and general disenchantment with
the Americans and troubles plaguing the Mexican citizenry. A book called
“A Place as Wild as the West Ever Was” by Mary Daniels Taylor on the town
of Mesilla is excellent as is “Tres Macho-He Said” also by Fray Chavez for
insights into the Hispanic experience and their own heroes, at the time of the
Anglo Conquest or Mexican War. I would like to note that at least some of
our relatives lived at Santo Tomas, which was a land grant called Santo
Tomas de Iturbide, which was established for northern New Mexico
Hispanos who desired joining the great Cura Ramon Ortiz, in his official
capacity of Commissioner for Repatriation leading the establishment of land
grants for those desiring going across the Rio Grande away from the
American occupation.

The Sept. 12, 1859 baptismal church record signed by the priest Jose de Jesus
Cabeza de Baca at San Albino in Mesilla for Maria Refina (Rufina?), the four-day old
child of Pantaleon Parra and Atanacia Ribas with the paternal grandparents being
Bonifacio Parra and Juana Dominguez and maternal grandparents being Jesus Ribas
and Blasa Esparza.
As I said in my introduction, I sincerely believe that we, the Hispanos
of Nuevo Mexico and also of that hidden little valley north of the Cerro de
Las Remedios, probably have lived and stuck together a pretty long time,
since our departure from the land of our Spanish forefathers. We were
indeed a group, and it appears in large, a Sephardic group, hidden or
gradually assimilated in the wilderness that was Nuevo Mexico. We
marched, walked and rode those bloodline equines of the Iberian Peninsula
alongside Francisco de Coronado and the famous Juans, Onate and, quite
likely, Grijalva. They (the Spaniards) said this new land was so far from
God, yet they learned to love it as a Promised Land, never looking back. The
seed of the conquistadores yet is sown and the harvest grows. The Parra’s
have certainly propagated successfully, as our incomplete family tree shows.
