SPECIFICATION

-A general term applying to all directions, provisions and requirements pertaining to the performance of
the work

IMPORTANCE OF SPECIFICATION
Essential to the efficient cost of a project
Informs the contractor of the work to be performed, conditions, restrictions, expected

quality of work and the manner the work will be done

WHAT IS A WELL WRITTEN SPECIFICATION:
Clear, concise and technically correct
Do not use ambiguous words which will lead to misinterpretation
Use short words and easy to understand sentences
Avoid conflicting requirements
Do not provide reasons for requirements
State construction requirements sequentially
Avoid using phrases such as and/or; his/her
FORMAT PER DIVISION
1. Description: short statements summarizing the works covered by the division, this should not
contain details, materials or construction requirements
2. Material: specifies the material requirement of the division
3. Construction requirement: consist of required construction procedure or end results of the work to
be performed.

Do not bold, italicize words in the body

Text of headings and tiles can be bold
Use 11pt. Times New Roman

COMPOSITION OF SENTENCE
1. Use the verb will when stating actions
2. Use shall when the action shall be done by the contractor
Example:
DIVISION 2
Site work: basically what is done in the site

Shall have Works included:

staking out of building. Establishment of lines, grades and benchmarks. all excavation should include
works including all necessary bracing and drainage of storm water from site
3. All filling and grading. Removal of excess materials from site
4. Protection of property, work and structures, workmen, and other people from damage and injury
should be the responsibility of the contractor
DIVISION 1
Construction Requirement:
Excavation shall be to the depth indicated bearing values. Excavation for footing and foundations shall
extend a sufficient distance from the walls and footings to allow proper erection and dismantling of
forms. All excavation will be inspected and approved before pouring any concrete. The contractor shall
control the grading in the vicinity of all excavated areas to prevent surface drainage running into
excavations.
DIVISION 2:
Description
Temp facilities, excavation, separated them per item
Title, lines and grades, Benchmarks, Stakes and batter boards
Stake out accurately the lines of the building and of the other structures included in the contract and
establish grades, after which, secure approval by the architect before any excavation work is commenced.
Erect basic batter boards and basic reference marks at such places where they shall not be disturbed
during the construction of the foundation.
DIVISION 3: Concrete (description)
Unless otherwise specified herein, concrete work shall conform to the requirements of the Building Code
of the Philippines. Full cooperation shall be given to other trades to install embedded items. Embedded
items will be inspected and tested for concrete aggregates and other materials.
Materials:
1. Cement for concrete shall conform to the requirements of specifications for Portland cement.

2. Water used in mixing concrete shall be clean and free from other substances that may damage
concrete or steel.
3. Washed sand shall consist of part, tough, durable and coated particles. The shape of the particles
shall be generally rounded or cubicle, and reasonably free from flat or elongated particles.
4. Crushed gravels shall consist of gravel diameter part, tough, durable and coated particles
5. Reinforcing bars shall conform to the requirements of ASTM Standard Specifications.
Formworks shall be framed with 2x2 with or boards to confine the concrete and shape it to
the required size.
DIVISION Painting
Construction Reqirements
After finishing concrete walls, apply a concrete neutralizer before painting. Dry the neutralizer for
twenty-four hours. Paint in the concrete primer and sealer for latex and let dry. After primering, apply two
patches of skim coat to effectively wipe out dents. Apply then the first coat of the wall colour and patch
the body filler with the imperfections. Paint in the final coat after applying the body filler.
