Appliqu Blocks
(Note: Patterns and instructions are given using the fusible appliqu method. For needle-turn method,
add seam allowance to patterns.)
1. Appliqu Preparation
Prepare appliqu patches using the method of your choice. In the quilt shown, appliqu patches were
prepared using the freezer paper and starch method, then stitched in place by hand. Patches can also be
secured in place using a tiny zigzag stitch and monofilament thread.
To create the stems, fold the green tonal scroll 1-1/2 wide strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.
Stitch a scant seam from the raw edge. Press tube flat, pressing seam to one side; trim seam allowance
if necessary. Cut into (4) 4 segments.
2. Assembling the Appliqu Block
Fold and press buttercream scroll tonal 12-1/2 square vertically,
horizontally, and diagonally to create placement guides. Place
stems on the diagonal crease, approximately 3/8 from the blocks
center. Stitch in place.
Appliqu remaining shapes in alphabetical order. Note: the green
flower bases should overlap the stems approximately ; the
points of the black floral E diamonds should be positioned
from the block center.
Press block from the wrong side. Sew 1 x 12-1/2 stripe strips to
sides of appliqu block. Press seams toward striped fabric. Add the 1-1/2 x 14-1/2 strips to the top and
bottom, pressing seams toward stripe fabric.
