Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

If you are like me whenever you go into a fabric store you are
overwhelmed by choices, especially of a new fabric shipment just came in. I
seem to always want what's new. No matter when I fabric shop I always seem
to wind up with a handful of charm packs. I use them for color ideas and
inspiration. Charm packs are usually less than $10.00 and have up to 42 pieces
of 5x5 fabric. The fabric swatches represent the entire fabric line by a specific
artist or designer. Now I have created a collection to uses these charm packs.
There are 15 different quilt blocks that all use the charm pack swatches.
If you have ever been frustrated by traditional piecing fear no more. All of
the piecing for the quilt blocks in this collection is done in your embroidery hoop.
The quilting possibilities are endless. You simply place the fabric down, stitch a
folding line, fold the fabric and stitch it in place! They are that easy to create.
The tutorial will show you ways to repeat and rotate each block to create a
complete quilt with every design. We will also show you how to combine the
designs together for even more detailed quilts.

Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

Notes on Sizes
There are 3 different ways that you can use this collection. The first way is to use only charm packs for the quilt. You will be able to
make a 20x20 quilt out of a 42 square charm pack. So if you want a bigger project you will need to use multiple packs. Also
because of the variety of fabric in a charm pack the finished blocks may be tricky to arrange. The second way is by combining
charm packs with pieces of fabric. The photos below show you two different samples of this. We used a charm pack with a piece of
solid fabric from the line so that when combined each block has a common element. The third way os to use fabric yardage for your
whole project forgoing the charm packs all together. By doing this you will be able to create quilts where every block is the same and
easy to create a patter. The tutorial shows examples of all three ways to use this collection.
Charm packs are all 5x5 some come with 42 squares, while some may come with 24 and so on. The amount of fabric in a line will
determine how many blocks you will get out of a charm pack. I am sure that whatever method you use you will have wonderful
results. The following pages will show you everything you need to know to create the Charm Pack Quilt Blocks.

Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

This is an example of a project that uses a single charm pack. The finished size is 20x20. You
will notice that not many of the fabrics are repeated.

Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

In this example we used a charm pack with a yard of corresponding fabric. You wind up with a much
larger quilt and the corresponding fabric adds continuity to each block.

Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

We devised a way to cut down on fabric usage. Instead of cutting a large piece of fabric as your base to
hoop you are going to hoop a piece of inexpensive muslin or cotton. You will then use your base fabric as an
applique. It is a very simple technique and it eliminates fabric wastage. You will also not need to center your
designs before cutting your blocks, this is all done in the design itself. You projects will be done in half the
time!
Here is what you will need for each block to start the project.
1. muslin and Floriani No Show Mesh cut to the size of your embroidery hoop
2. Warm and Natural cut to the size of your block - example 3.25 x 3.25
3. Your base fabric cut to 1 larger than your design - example 4.5 x 4.5
To start hoop a piece of muslin along with the No
Show Mesh Stabilizer. Stitch out step one, this is the
squaring stitch. Once the squaring stitch is complete
place a piece of warm and natural batting inside the
square. The batting should be cut to the size of the
squaring stitch. Once it is in place stitch the next
step, this is the tacking stitch. This stitch will tack
your batting in place.

Stitch the next step in the design. This is the

placement stitch for your first piece of fabric.

Lay your first piece of fabric down(decorative side

up) so that it completely covers. The placement
stitch and stitch the next step in the design. This will
tack your first piece of fabric in place. The remainder
of the appliques use the folded fabric technique
which consists of three steps. Make sure you always
leave at least of fabric extending outside the
squaring stitch. Don't forget this is your seam
allowance. Always match your thread to the color of
the fabric.

This tutorial originally appeared in Garden Gate. The techniques used in this collection are exactly the same.

Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

Stitch the next step in the design. This is the
placement stitch, it will show you the exact shape of
the applique.

Lay your next applique fabric face down so that

of it extends past the top of the placement
stitch. The dotted line indicates where the
placement stitch is. You can use tape or spray
adhesive to hold it in place if you need to.

Stitch the next step of the design. This is the

folding line. It will stitch across the fabric.

Fold your fabric over so that it is now face up. The

folding line that just stitched will allow you to achieve
a perfect fold. Again you can tape it in place if you
think its necessary.

This tutorial originally appeared in Garden Gate. The techniques used in this collection are exactly the same.

Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

Stitch the next step in the design. This will tack the
folded fabric in place. The dotted line to the left
indicates how this stitch will look. Always match your
thread to the color of the fabric.

You will now repeat these steps for the next

applique there are between 2 and 6 appliques in
each design. When you are finished you have a quilt
block that looks like you pieced it in the traditional
manner.

Using your ruler and rotary cutter trim the blocks

leaving a seam allowance around the outside.

This what each block should look like trimmed.

This tutorial originally appeared in Garden Gate. The techniques used in this collection are exactly the same.

Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

Before you sew the blocks together you need to line
them up along the outside stitched lines. Pin them
together to insure accurate sewing.

Sew the blocks together in the same way you would

piece a quilt. Sew right along the squaring stitch
lines in the block.

This is what two blocks will look like when pieced.

You want to press your seams flat after each block

to insure accurate sewing. You would repeat these
steps for the entire quilt.

This tutorial originally appeared in Garden Gate. The techniques used in this collection are exactly the same.

Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

Now it is time to add our back fabric and stitch in the
ditch. Since your batting was added under each
block there is no need to add additional batting. Cut
your back piece of fabric so that it extends past
the edges of the quilt.

Stitch in the ditch between each of the blocks.

Add your binding, we used another fabric from the

line, this is optional you could also use a solid. We
used a finished binding.

The final step is to stitch in the ditch of the binding.

Youre finished!!!

Gate. The techniques used in this
collection are exactly the same.
