SURVEYS IN
MANUKAU CITY
Not all telephone surveys are thinly
disguised marketing ploys.
Manukau City Council is supporting
two surveys in the city that will help guide
local and central government policies and
planning for the region.
The fi rst is the council’s annual “Citizens
Perception Survey”, which collects a
range of information, including the use of
council facilities. People will be asked to
rate the performance satisfaction of the
facilities they use. The data collected is
used to advise council on what’s happening
in the city and where there could be
improvements.
The second survey is a collaborative
effort with the Ministry of Social
Development. The “Quality of Life” survey
takes about 20 minutes to complete but
gives council and the ministry essential
information on what is going well, and where
there are gaps, in services facilities and
other programmes that affect the quality of
life of Manukau citizens.

THE LIVING ART OF PACIFIC TATTOO
This stunning exhibition at Mangere Arts
Centre documents ta moko, tatau, tatu and
tattoo within communities living in New
Zealand and the Pacifi c.
The focus is on telling Pacifi c stories and
exploring areas of social discourse within
these cultures.
“All the artists were chosen because
of their commitment and passion for
documenting living tatau and ta moko
tattoo cultures in the Pacifi c” says curator
Steven Ball.
The exhibition premiered at the 2005
Tattoonesia tattoo convention in Moorea,
Tahiti, has shown at Milan and Auckland
city, and will also be exhibited in
Amsterdam and London.
The Living Art of Pacifi c Tattoo is open
now, and will feature at the arts centre
until Friday 25 August.
A MYSTERY
SOLVED
AFTER HALF A DECADE
LISTED AS “MISSING
IN ACTION”, A BRONZE
PLAQUE COMMEMORATING
A SIGNIFICANT GIFT TO
MANGERE HAS BEEN FOUND.
The plaque commemorates a donation of
land to the people of Mangere in 1923 by
one of the community’s pioneers, Samuel
Ward House. The area is known as House
Recreation Ground and now accommodates
the Metro Theatre/Mangere East Hall.
Manukau Parks Operations Manager
Robert Findlay says the plaque went missing
fi ve years ago when a car ploughed into
the wall that held it. In the confusion that
followed, the plaque was set aside and
knowledge of its whereabouts was lost.
However, it has now re-surfaced as
a reminder of an interesting piece of
local history.
Mr House, an entrepreneurial orchardist
and market gardener, was a founding
director of Turners and Growers. He also
served on several local bodies including the
Mangere East Electricity Board. He lived
at 159 Robertson Rd, Mangere, from about
1908 and public records show he bought the
property in 1911.
He married Emily Quarry and their
children — two daughters and one son
— were born at the home. The address was
also the location of his several businesses,
including seven glasshouses, a sawmill and
some small cottages, providing work
for about 17 staff.

Installation of a gate at the Rangitoto View
Road access to the beach has resulted in a
decrease in antisocial behaviour in the area,
prompting calls from residents for a second
gate at the Beach Road entrance.
The Howick Community Board has been
asked to consider a new gate that could be
opened at 7am, and locked at 9pm during
NZ daylight saving time or 7pm during NZ
standard time. Outside of these times there
would be no vehicle access to the boat ramp
or the beach.
Some neighbouring residents back the
plan but both the Howick Community Board
and Manukau City Council are keen to get
wider public input, and especially want to

Schools for use by Kohanga Reo and
kindergartens. Incorporating simple
commands, this resource has been

individual reader and flash cards with
commands, are available to groups
when they enrol in a Swimsation Swim
School programme at Manukau City
Council pools.
