The Module Selection Guide

A System II module is one bay of a metal-enclosed

switchgear assembly-exactly as shown in Selector
Charts 1 through 4 of this data bulletin. All System II
modules are UL listed with Category B enclosure
construction or optional Category A enclosure construction. Dimensions of each module and the location of all basic components and optional features are
standardized within the enclosure. The optional
features are listed on pages 14 through 18 of this data
bulletin and may be located in the enclosure in various
combinations as long as the basic components and
options are installed in the standard locations.
S&C System II Modular Metal-Enclosed Switchgear
features:
The S&C Mini-Rupter Switch alone (unfused) or in
combination with S&C Fault Fiter Electronic Power
Fuses or a choice of S&C Type SM (SM-20, SM-40,
SM-4Z, SM-5S, or SM-5SS) Power Fuses.
The 1200-ampere S&C Alduti-Rupter Switch is used
alone (unfused).
The switch type and fuse type used in each module
are as shown in Selector Charts 1 through 4.
Power-operated modules include Mini-Rupter
Switches alone or in combination with S&C Power
Fuses, or Alduti-Rupter Switches alone, and provisions
for one of the following optional S&C Switch Operators
with optional S&C Automatic Control Equipment.
MS-2 Switch Operators are high-speed stored-energy
switch operators used to provide Mini-Rupter
Switches with both automatic solenoid trip-open and
automatic solenoid trip-closed switch operation

with automatic motor charging of the quick-make

quick-break mechanism after each operation. MS-2
Switch Operators are drawout-mounted in the
switchgear stiling to provide decoupling and ease of
inspection. When applied with an S&C Micro-AT
Source-Transfer Control, transfer is accomplished in
10 cycles excluding any intentional time delay for
coordination.
MS-10 Switch Operators are high-speed stored-energy
switch operators used to provide Mini-Rupter
Switches with automatic solenoid trip-open operation and with manual charging of the quick-make
quick-break mechanism and manual closing. MS-10
Switch Operators are rigidly mounted on the
switchgear stiling. When applied with a Type ZSD
Overcurrent Relay or a Type SPD Open-Phase
Detector, interrupting time is 4 cycles excluding any
intentional time delay for coordination.
AS-30 Switch Operators are chair-coupled motordriven switch operators used to provide AldutiRupter Switches with motor-driven opening and
closing. AS-30 Switch Operators are rigidly mounted
in the switchgear stiling and are equipped with a
decoupling feature. When applied with a Micro-AT
Source-Transfer Control, transfer is accomplished in
3 seconds excluding any time delay for coordination.
For a complete description of these and all components in S&C System II Modular Metal-Enclosed Switchgear, refer to S&C Descriptive Bulletin 622-30. For
application information on metal-enclosed switchgear,
refer to S&C Data Bulletin 620-55.

The ratings for each module tabulated in Selector

Charts 1 through 4 are based on the ratings of the S&C
component in each module with the lowest rating.
Similarly, the ratings assigned to a complete assembly
of S&C System II Modular Metal-Enclosed Switchgear
are based on the ratings of the lowest-rated bay in the
assembly.
For modules that contain interrupter switches, the
interrupting ratings of the switches equal or exceed
the continuous ampere ratings of the modules. The
short-circuit ratings in Selector Charts 1 through 4 are
expressed in amperes rms symmetrical. Unless other-

wise noted, the asymmetrical ratings are 1.6 times the

symmetrical values listed. The momentary ratings of
switches and bus, and the interrupting ratings of fuses,
equal or exceed these values. The duty-cycle faultclosing ratings of switches expressed in amperes rms
asymmetrical equal or exceed the asymmetrical shortcircuit ratings. The duty-cycle fault-closing ratings
define the ability to close the switch once or twice, as
specified, against a three-phase fault with asymmetrical
current in at least one phase equal to the rated value,
with the switch remaining operable and able to carry
and interrupt rated continuous current.

DATA BULLETIN

Selector Charts 1 through 4, on pages 6 through 13,

show the available modules containing basic switch and
fuse components in various combinations. A wide range
of optional features is also available (see pages 14
through 18). Tailoring S&C System II Modular MetalEnclosed Switchgear to your requirements entails only
the selection and location of the proper modules and
optional features to perform the required switching and
protection functions. Approximate cable-termination
heights are tabulated in Selector Charts 1 through 4
to aid in the selection of the module most appropriate
for a given application, but are for estimating purposes
only. These heights are in inches (rounded to the

nearest 1) and represent the distance from the bottom

of the enclosure to the lower edge of the terminal pad
or terminal-adapter plate. The actual cable-termination
height available in any module may differ from the
dimension listed if certain options or combinations of
options are included. The actual heights as well as
anchor-bolt plans and locations of cable centerlines will
be shown on the CDA drawings prepared for each
specific order for a switchgear assembly.
The following steps provide an easy-to-follow guide
for engineering the appropriate lineup for a given
installation.

Sketch a one-line diagram of the required switchgear

assembly (as shown in the example at right) and
establish the following:
A. Nominal system voltage.
B. Maximum available short-circuit current in
amperes rms symmetrical (allowing for anticipated
system growth).
C. Maximum continuous main-bus current.
D. Need for switch operators (manual and poweroperated modules can be intermixed).

The Module Selection Guide

From the table below, determine the selector chart

containing modules with ratings equal to or greater

than the values established in Step 1. Chart 3 applies

to the example shown in Step 1.

SELECTOR CHART TABLE

* When using SELECTOR CHART 4, maximum voltage rating of the

switchgear assembly is 15 kv when any module contains a 1200-ampere
Alduti-Rupter Switch. 15.5 kv when any module contains SM-5SS Power
Fuses or optional Fusistor Units (included with optional fused voltage
transformers and rollout carriages)

Now draw a layout of the switchgear assembly (as

shown in the example below), and determine basic
module numbers on the basis of:
A. Function (entrance, feeder, auxiliary, and
metering).
B. Basic Components (bus, interrupter switch, and
interrupter switch with fuses).
C. One-Line Diagram (cable entrance and exit).
D. Compact modules for cost savings and low
silhouette.

DATA BULLETIN

The asymmetrical short-circuit rating is 61,000 amperes rms

E. Universal modules for those cases where an option

or a combination of options requires additional
height, or where more cable-termination height is
required. (See pages 19 and 20 for availability of
options and option combinations in compact and
universal modules.)
F. Manual or Power Operated.
IMPORTANT: Compact and universal modules cannot
be intermixed, and all modules in a switchgear assembly
must be selected from the same selector chart.

Refer again to the layout drawn in Step 3. Select the

required OPTIONAL FEATURES (see pages 14

through 18) and add appropriate symbols or

descriptions.

Draw a sketch of the switchgear assembly and

determine its overall dimensions (as shown in the
example below). The height, depth, and width for both
compact and universal modules are shown in the
selector chart. The overall width of the assembly is
determined by adding the widths of the individual
modules, obtained from the selector chart or from the
front. views shown on page 24. For estimating purposes
in planning for loading on concrete pads, use an
approximate weight of 2000 pounds for each 4.16-kv
module and 3000 pounds for each 13.8-kv module.
Check the minimum space requirements, remembering that:

Modules can be placed against a wall or, if indoor,

back-to-back. (A plan view of the switchgear
assembly should be supplied for the configuration.)
Minimum room height above modules should be
12 inches for ease of installation.
Minimum lateral clearance at sides should be 1 inch
for ease of installation.
Minimum aisle width in front is 48 inches for 4.16 kv
and 60 inches for 13.8 kv.
Space requirements for possible future additions
should be considered.

available in compact and universal heights. Compact
height offers the economy of low cost, features low
silhouette, and permits inclusion of most options. For
those cases where options or combinations of options
are not available in compact modules, or where
compact modules do not offer sufficient cabletermination height, universal height is used. For ease
in selecting the proper height, the tables below and
