and in class.
Month Value: Responsibility
Some modal verbs can be used to express probability in the present and past.

Uses Must, can't: expressing present probability

Structure: modal + verb infinitive without to
must be, cant be, must have, cant have, etc.
We use must to express that we feel
sure that something is true.

The team is playing really well today;

they must win.
They must be very rich look at their
big house!

We use can't to say we are sure that

something is impossible.

She can't be so ill I saw her playing

volleyball yesterday.
I don't believe you it can't be true.

Uses of May, might, could: probability in the present

Structure: modal verb + verb infinitive without tomay be, might do, could
go, etc.
We use may, could or might to say that Examples:
it is possible that something will
happen in the future or is happening
They may be arriving tomorrow.
now.
He might be away on holiday at the
moment.
He could be away on holiday.
He might get the job.
The negative of may is may not.
The negative of might is might not.
Both may not and might not mean that
it is possible that something will not
happen or is not happening now.

Examples:
He might not get the job.
I may not pass the exam.
I might not go to the match tomorrow.

Obligations, rules and laws

Must - Have to
When do we use 'must', when do we use 'have to'?
Must and have to both express obligation.
However, they are used differently depending on who imposes the
obligation.
MUST
HAVE TO
The speaker thinks it is necessary.
Someone else thinks it is necessary.

that.)
(It is not my decision - my husband
asked me to do it.)

flight.)
"Dogs must be kept on a lead."
(Written on a sign in the park = a rule
which
must be obeyed.)

I have to keep my dog on a lead.

(That's what the sign tells me to do.)

N.B. In the negative form, the meaning changes.

You mustn't tell George =
You don't have to tell George =
it is important not to tell George =
you can tell George if you like,
don't tell George.
but it isn't necessary. It's your
decision.

Modals for Advice

Let's learn how to give advice!
English speakers use the modal verbs should, ought to and had
better to express that they think something is a good (or a bad)
idea. Should is the most common way to give advice.
Look at these examples:
Affirmative
A: I failed my test.
B: Really?
You should
study harder.
A: It's really cold
outside.
B: You ought to
wear a warm
jacket.
A: You had better
slow down. You
are driving too
fast!

Negative
Young children shouldn't
watch violent TV shows.

Question
I have a
problem. Should I call my
parents or my friend?

(ought to is not usually

used in the negative form)

(ought to is not common in

question form)

You had better not

forget to pay your tuition.
If you do, the university
will kick you out!

(had better is not usually

used in question form)

These examples have the same basic advice message, but had better is a
bit stronger. It includes the idea of a warning: something bad will happen if
you do not follow my advice.
For example:
You had better do your homework. If you do not do your homework, the
teacher will give you a low mark.
In the above examples, you can see that the modals are followed by the simple
form of a verb in these patterns.
Subject + modal + basic verb + ...

You should study harder.

Note: You had better... can be contracted to become You'd better....

This is correct grammar, and very common in speaking. Some native
speakers say, You better ..., but this is incorrect. The had is necessary
in good grammar.

thing we use a Reflexive Pronoun.
