VOLLEYBALL OFFICIATING

SOLUTIONS
PROVISION OF VOLLEYBALL OFFICIATING SERVICES

About Hawk-Eye
Hawk-Eye was first used in Cricket in 2001 with the mission to improve the speed and accuracy of officiating decisions in
sport through technology and innovation. This drive has enabled Hawk-Eye to develop a deep understanding of both
sports officiating and broadcasting, to the point that the company is now a trusted partner to twelve major sports globally
with a reputation of delivering technical solutions that make the game fairer, safer and more engaging.

Hawk-Eyes SMART Replay

In collaboration with Sony, Hawk-Eye has developed a technology that records all broadcast angles in real time and makes
these angles available immediately either on or off site, to help multiple stakeholders across sports officiating, player
welfare, coaching and broadcast. The SMART Replay software allows officials to select as many angles as they wish in
single, split or quad screen view, rewind, pause and zoom in, to deliver a complete picture of an incident. SMART Replay
was first used at the 2012 Olympic Games and is currently being used by the Premier League, AFL, MLB, NASCAR, NHL,
IAAF and Racing Victoria.

SMART Replay
SMART Replay provides the backbone for many of Hawk-Eyes video based officiating services, including for badminton
and volleyball. Hawk-Eye is the official provider of officiating services for the BWF and has been used at 15 pinnacle
events this year. These events include the 12 Superseries, the 2014 Superseries Finals, the 2014 World Championships
and the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals 2014. Hawk-Eye has also been endorsed as an official provider of officiating
technology by the FIVB. SMART Replay will be used to officiate the following incidents:

How it works
In Volleyball, Hawk-Eye installs courtside portable high frame rate cameras looking down the court lines. These images
are viewed instantaneously via SMART Replay to determine whether a shuttle or volleyball has landed IN or OUT or
whether other infringements have happened in volleyball (such as foot faults or net touches). Once a decision has been
made, a virtual animation is created which removes any controversy. The virtual animation is played simultaneously on
the big screen and to broadcast to clearly inform the officials, players, fans and TV audience of the outcome.

Description of Equipment, Setup and Procedure

Portable high speed cameras are installed looking down the lines that can be challenged. The images from these cameras
are then sent back via one network cable from the court to the Hawk-Eye Operations area.
A Hawk-Eye technician then has access to the high frame rate images via SMART Replay. When a player wants to
challenge, the Hawk-Eye technician can quickly show the official that is sat next to the technician the point of impact.
Once the official has made their decision, the Hawk-Eye technician will then show a virtual animation to inform all the
officials, players, fans and the TV audience of the outcome.
