Wildlife officials from N.H. Fish and Game Department remind

motorists to take extra care while traveling Granite State roadways at this time of year, because moose are on the move looking
for mates. Kristine Rines, Fish and Games longtime Moose
Project Leader, says that drivers should be prepared to see and
react quickly to moose on or near the road. While moose vehicle
collisions happen at all times of the year, fall is a time of
increased activity and accidents. In 2014, over 130 moose were
killed by vehicles in New Hampshire.

Lately I've been keeping company during the late hours of

each night with May Sarton's
"Journal of a Solitude." I've
encountered her poetry for
years and whenever I do I
appreciate her gift, but her journal is something deeper, more
honest and genuine. The late
New Hampshire poet lived

ledges with views more breathtaking than I've ever noticed.

For this certainly has been the
best fall foliage I've seen in
years. And just as the colors
and the light have been luminous, so are her words. How
fortunate we are to live here,
and how fortunate to have poets
and writers who understand
New Hampshire.
As they
reflect this great area and the
natural world that surrounds us,
Nature reflects who we are as
we surrender to her charms.

An Emerging Concern For Garlic Growers__________________________________________________________

October is the best time to plant

garlic here in northern New

easy crop to grow, and as a
bonus, unlike many other crops,
deer dont bother it. Most gardeners either buy their seed garlic from other growers or save
their own from this seasons

One challenge with identifying

white rot is that the symptoms
can easily look like other garlic

Adventures in
Homesteading

Just Work

When Ryan and I consider our

root cellar project (which is
nearing completion! soon!),
there are three distinct phases
that we think of. First, the cinder block masonry. This was a
new skill to learn, and one that
demanded huge efforts to prepare for: carrying the cinder
blocks into the property, and
hauling bags of concrete and
mortar mix. These extra challenges made for some good stories, though, and once we got
the hang of slingin mud,
enjoyed the rhythm of erecting
walls.

Second is the carpentry

required to frame and cap the
cellar, construct the trap door,
and build the temporary roof to
allow for winter access (until a
more permanent shed is built
over the cellar). Though carry-

ing
dimensional
lumber
through the woods to our clearing is - compared to lugging
cinder blocks - a relatively
comfortable stroll, the work
itself requires a precision and
an exactitude that is difficult to
achieve with hand tools.
Cutting a board to a certain
length that, for example,
includes 7/16 is onerous to
perfectly achieve without favoring a minor tilt to the saw, or
one side of the cut line versus
the other...not to mention the
weariness that can creep in after
hours of cutting with one hand
while holding a given board
steady with the other. Quality
carpentry is greatly assisted by
meticulous tools and a suitable
workplace. Whether for our
lack of these prerequisites, or
simply a predisposition against
such fine detail, this work we
find more trying than any other
aspect of the cellar project.

The third aspect of our project

is equally demanding, and also
our favorite: shoveling to backfill the cellar. This required
multiple days of moving and
terracing rocks, and shoveling
til our backs needed a rest.
Changing the landscape, manually, one shovelful of dirt at a
time, with the sun wringing
sweat out of us and the heat
testing our endurance; it is both
daunting and elating to do what
is nowadays commonly relegated to a tractor or backhoe. This
is the work we relish, have confidence in, and find most satisfying. We may have learned the
basics of masonry, we may
understand the tenants of simple carpentry...but moving dirt
and rocks is something we
innately know. The smell of
dirt, the weight of its matter, the
abrasive roughness of granite
with veins of feldspar, mica
schist, or quartz, the simple
repetitiveness of hard, physical
labor.

On Sunday, September 20, the G. Hampton McGaw Chapter

of the National Honor Society of Woodsville High School built
and placed a bench in the Bedell Bridge State Park in
Haverhill, NH. The chapter at Woodsville High School maintains the park on a semi-regular basis and would like to thank
Mr. Scott Edwards, Woodsville High School Tech. Ed. teacher,
and Ms. Susan Brown for helping to make this project possiIts tiring, it can be uncomfort- ble. Samuel Pushee, Derek Maccini, and Samuel Fairfield put

we just up and do it because it
needs to be done. In Ryans
words, such physical labor is

You by Jojo Moyes on

Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl

She takes a badly needed job
working for Will Traynor, who
is wheelchair bound after an
accident. Will has always lived
a huge life and now he is sure
he cannot live the way he is...

Dear Friends, Philippians 1:9-10 says,

And this is my prayer: that your love
may abound more and more in knowledge
and depth of insight, so that you may be able
to discern what is best and may be pure and
blameless for the day of Christ... The Word of
God is TRUTH! We are to renew our minds
daily with the Word of God. 2 Timothy 3:1617 tells us,All Scripture is given by inspiration
of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness, that the man of God may be
complete, thoroughly equipped for every
good work. Read Gods Word! God Bless you
all.

The Outside Story - by Meghan McCarthy McPhaul _________________________________________________

Black Swallowtails Have
Many Disguises

It was the dotted, orangey-yellow and black stripes that stood

out, drawing my sons gaze to
the edge of the sandbox. A small
caterpillar clung to the
goutweed, munching away on
the green leaves. At first we
thought it was a monarch caterpillar, but the stripes werent
quite right. Out came the field
guide, where we discovered our
caterpillar to be a future black
swallowtail butterfly. After that
first discovery, we suddenly
noticed more caterpillars, both
in that patch of goutweed and on
the greens of the carrots in our
late-summer garden.

to the changing landscape, and
its caterpillars propensity for
munching on members of the
carrot (Apiaceae) family carrot, dill, parsley, fennel has
earned it an occasional reputation as a pest, and the nickname
parsley worm. Its also commonly found on Queen Annes

initial two instars or skin shedding phases the caterpillar is
spikey and dark brown except
for a white saddle that makes the
little creeper look like a bird
dropping. What bird would want
to eat that? As the caterpillar
bulks up, it develops the wavering yellow stripes, mingled with
black and white ones, that first
caught our attention. These
stripes are a visual bluff, suggesting to predators that it may
be toxic. Any bird that has tried
to nosh on an awful-tasting
monarch caterpillar is likely to
eschew anything of similar coloration.

In our little garden plot, with

plenty of greens to go around,
the caterpillars became a happy
curiosity rather than a nuisance.
That summer we found so many
of them we became careful in
harvesting the carrots. We
moved most of the caterpillars to
other food plants, but kept a few

the forest should relax, rejuvenate and renew. Research and my
personal experience shows this to
be true.

For the most part, when I walk in

the woods, I come home feeling
relaxed and happier than when I
started. Walking in the woods is
guaranteed to distract me from
whatever ails mefamily, work
or general malaise. There are just
too many beautiful and magnificent sights, even on the smallest
woodlots.

In too few years EAB made its

way to 25 states, including New
Hampshire. We found it in
Concord in 2013. Though EAB is
a good flier, it didnt traverse the
country on its own. It radiated
out from the Midwest in nursery
stock and wood products, especially as campers brought their
infested firewood with them on
camping trips. We now have
quarantines in place limiting the
movement of ash products,
including firewood, but EAB is
here to stay and the best we can
hope is to slow the spread.
Since EABs discovery, millions

streams and rivers, or tromp

ash. If I spy one, I look for the
tell-tale sign of the blonded
bark caused by woodpeckers
flaking off the outer bark as they
forage for EAB larvae developing in the life-giving cambium
and phloem.
I consider this unconscious attentionlooking for ash and then
looking for the insect when I find
the ashas woods-worrying and
I resent it, but I cant help it.

Though a minor component in

most New Hampshire forests, ash
is a beautiful tree. Often

straighter than neighboring trees

and limbless for most of its trunk,
ash resemble light-colored,
green-topped telephone poles
scattered throughout the forest.
Ash is economically valuable
and grows in sensitive ecological
areas like floodplains, black ash
swamps, and enriched cove hardwood stands at the base of slopes.
I know of more than one woodlot
owner who has nurtured ash as
part of their woodlot for decades,
designating their ash as the crop

for the longest time to the maximum maturity. EAB has changed
their plans.

As of this writing, weve found

EAB in ten New Hampshire
towns. Though not in Grafton
County, weve found it in bordering Sanbornton. The N.H.

and also created management
zones with suggestions for homeowners and woodlot owners.

you can plan. I also invite you to

Though Im not typically a

woods-worrier, lately one thing
has been bugging me during my
woods-walks and that is literally
a bugthe emerald ash borer
(EAB). This ash-killing, nonnative insect was first found in
the U.S. in the Detroit area in
2002. Detroit is one of the major

huge volumes of trade happens
along the Great Lakes, linked to
the Atlantic Ocean by way of the
St. Lawrence River. EAB was
shipped into this country on

late to protect our ash.

of ash have died. Death is the

unfortunate fate of ash infested
by emerald ash borer. Though we
can effectively inject street-side
and home-grown trees with
insecticides, the ash I see on my
woods-walks cant be treated
with this way. There are too
many of them, too scattered, and
it would be too costly.

Public Rule Hearing On Wildlife

Rehabilitator Permits & More__________

A public hearing on proposed rule changes affecting wildlife

rehabilitator permits and the importation of fishing bait will be
held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, October 15, 2015, at the N.H.
Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, N.H.

Fish and Game is readopting, with some minor changes, the rules
regulating the possession and importation of wildlife. The new
rules would bar the importation of aquatic invertebrates (including crayfish) for bait, and would establish a six-trap combined
limit for crayfish and minnows.

The proposed changes also include a two-tier system of wildlife

rehabilitator permits; there would be an apprentice permit and a
full wildlife rehabilitator permit.
The complete rulemaking notice, with original and proposed rule
language for these proposals, can be viewed at
www.wildnh.com/legislative/proposed-rules.html.

Written comments must be received by October 23, 2015. Send

to: comments@wildlife.nh.gov (use the rule name in your subject
line); or write to Executive Director, N.H. Fish and Game On Friday, North Country Senator Jeff Woodburn gave a full-day tour to Sen. Andrew Hosmer

remarkable artists close observations, artistic skills, and lifelong fascination with the natural world.

With a keen eye and deft hand,

Tyrol transforms her observations into images that engage us
with a deeper understanding of
the world around us. Art presents the opportunity to reveal
truths other than analytical
ones, said Tyrol. A random
moment, fully recognized, can
embrace the spirit and lead us to
a deeper understanding of life.

For many years, Tyrol has illustrated articles about the natural
world in Northern Woodlands
Magazine, as well as for a
weekly newspaper column supported by the Wellborn Ecology
Fund of New Hampshire
Charitable Foundation that runs
in several local publications. A
selection of these illustrations
will be featured in the exhibition, along with more recent
