Cement Bond Log

Calibrations

Internal Use Only

CBL Calibrations
Prior to running the tool in to the well calibrations
must be performed!
Calibrations are divided into two major categories
Surface

Master Calibrations
Pre-Job
Post Job

In Hole

Normalization

A customers well should never be used to master

calibrate a tool unless no other option is available.

Internal Use Only

CBL Calibrations
Gamma Ray
Calibrate gamma ray using standard Thorium Blanket.

GR Calibrations should be;

Master calibrated in shop
Pre-Survey conducted on location prior to conducting log
Post-Survey conducted after log is complete

Acoustics
Each tool will have a series of calibrations that need to be
performed prior to use.
Some tools have more calibration sets than others
Minimum calibration should be;

Pipe Zero
Pipe Amplitude

Internal Use Only

CBL Calibrations
Acoustic Calibrations cont.
Calibrations should be performed in a calibration fixture or in
a test well.
Calibrations performed in a clients well are normalizations.
Perform CBL Air calibrations with tool suspended in air and
not making contact with any object.

Internal Use Only

CBL GR Calibrations
Gamma Ray
Calibrate gamma ray using standard Thorium Blanket
Same calibration standards are required as for all NGRT

GR Calibrations should be;

Shop Calibration ( Valid For 30 Days)
Primary Verification
Pre-Survey conducted on location (up to 24 hours) prior to
conducting log
Post-Survey conducted (within 24 hours) after log is
complete

Internal Use Only

Factors affecting well bore calibrations

Fixed values for Pipe amplitude and travel time
assume fresh water in the borehole and behind the
casing
+/- fresh water density in borehole = +/- Amplitude and
TT from expected values
+/- fresh water density behind the casing = +/Amplitude from expected values

Internal Use Only

CBL Calibrations
Log down with gates set at expected values
Look for calibration location (should be highest
amplitude on log)
Preferably with 500 PSI hydrostatic pressure and
single string of casing

Internal Use Only

CBL CALIBRATIONS

Locate highest amplitude value

Internal Use Only

CBL CALIBRATIONS
Once location is found take note of raw amplitude
value
Turn around, pull in to position, watching raw sensor
outputs to ensure correct calibration location

Internal Use Only

Pipe Zero Calibration

Takes baseline zero value to establish 100% Bonded

Value = 0 mV
Tool should be stopped and between collars
Sonic gain should be adjusted so that the 5 waveform
takes up the entire window with out being clipped

Internal Use Only

Pipe Zero Calibration

Amp. Gate for all Receivers placed on baseline
between pulse out and E1
Gate size for this portion of the calibration is not
important: Raw sensor value is the overriding factor
Value should be as close to zero as possible with out
any negative readings

Internal Use Only

5 Waveform Properly Adjusted

Internal Use Only

CBL Pipe Zero Calibration

Move Amp. Gate to Base Line

Raw sensor value close to zero

Internal Use Only

CBL Pipe Signal Calibration

Establishes Maximum Pipe Signal Amplitude = 100 %
Free Pipe Value
High Reference Value Based on fixed value for
specific Casing Size (based on fresh water fluid
surrounding casing)
Tools should be stopped and in between collars
Calibration spot should represent the highest
amplitude in the well

Internal Use Only

CBL Pipe Signal Calibration

Amp. Gate from all receivers moved to Cover E1
Once completed verify calibration on the calibration
report
Raw sensor value should be noted so correct TT
threshold can be applied

Internal Use Only

CBL Pipe Signal Calibration

Amp. Gate covers E1

Note the raw sensor value for TT threshold setting

Internal Use Only

After Calibration
Once calibrations is performed Gate and gain settings
should not be adjusted
Log 200 of all sensors through calibration location
Perform proper LQA for free pipe

Correct TT for pipe

Correct Amp for pipe
Depth matching of collars with other curves
Decrease of amplitude with an increase in TT at collars
along with a chevron pattern in the MSG
