Types of Networks;
1. Local Area Network (LAN)
2.Wide Area Network (WAN)
3.Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

www.slt.lk

Local Area Networks (LAN)

A group of computers and network communication
devices interconnected within a geographically limited
area, such as a building

Characterized by,
Transfer data at high speeds
Exist in a limited geographical area
Resources are managed by the company running the
LAN.

www.slt.lk

Switch/Hub

www.slt.lk

Wide Area Networks (WAN)

Interconnects LANs
Characterized by,
Transfer data at low speeds
Exist in an unlimited geographical area
Interconnects multiple LANs
Connectivity and Resources are managed by a
Telephone Company

www.slt.lk

Customers say they need;

High Speed Connectivity (10,20,50 Mbps.)
Point to Point Data Connectivity
Network Connectivity
Internet Connectivity

Better Service Levels

Network availability - 99.999% (Can go out of service only
5.256 minutes per year)
Ring Access Networks
Highly available Data Nodes
Fast network resiliency

www.slt.lk

Customers say they need;

New and enhanced Services
LAN interconnections
Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS)
Enhanced QoS (Quality of Service)

Cost Effectiveness
Multiple Services on a single port
Cheap Services particularly at higher speeds

Can we deliver these in the current Network ?

www.slt.lk

Why Ethernet ?

- Most common Interface today

- Cost effective
- Supports very high Bandwidths (upto 1Gbps)
- Flexible upgrades within a wide range (1Mbps to 1Gbps)
- Easy and simple to manage and maintain

www.slt.lk

Ethernet as a Service
Ethernets origins in the Enterprise
Used as a LAN connectivity technology
Just plug it in and start using it

Ethernets new usage as a Service

Requires service attributes like other MAN /
WAN services
Ethernet UNI, Ethernet VC, Service Performance, etc.
Same Ethernet technology just used in a new way

www.slt.lk

Lets look at TDM and other L2 Services

Inflexible Bandwidth Scalability

Increasing non-Ethernet service
bandwidth often requires:

OC-48

New service (step function)

TDM hierarchy or L2
Service dictates
bandwidth increments and
technology
POS

OC-12

T1@T3, FR@ATM

New hardware
new interface or equipment

OC-3

New service provisioning

different protocols / technologies

Often resulting in:

Oversubscribing to meet growing
bandwidth needs

Ethernet Service Benefits over TDM/other L2 Services

Flexible Bandwidth Scalability

Increasing Ethernet service
bandwidth:

OC-48

Ethernet provides
flexible bandwidth
increments using same
technology

Requires just bandwidth provisioning 1GbE

Provision only amount of BW needed OC-12

Same protocol for LAN and MAN

OC-3

Lower OpEx & CapEx with Ethernet

25-40% lower cost than

POS

10/100MbE

ATM

Ethernet

T3

TDM, Frame Relay, ATM interfaces1

10x lower cost

than high speed SONET interfaces1

Easier and less costly to meet growing

bandwidth needs

L1, L2
Connection Oriented
Circuit Switched
Ex:-TDM, ATM, FR
FR and ATM have a VC identifier. Therefore,
we do not have to create labels.

www.slt.lk

L3
Connectionless
Packet Switched
Ex:-IP

www.slt.lk

L2 & L3
Traffic is switched
Control signal is routed
Ex:-IP/MPLS
Ethernet does not have a label. Therefore, we
have to create labels. We use MPLS.

www.slt.lk

Why MPLS for Ethernet Services

(EoMPLS)?

www.slt.lk

More Scalable (Free label Space)

Sub 50msec resiliency (MPLS Fast Reroute)
Traffic Engineering (RSVP-TE)
Hierarchical QoS (HQoS)
Easy and simple to operate and maintain
