In1832,MichaelFaradayobservedthattheamountofsubstanceundergoingoxidation

knownasFaradaysLawofElectrolysis.Thequantitativeunitofelectricity,now
calledthefaraday,istheamountofelectricitythatreducesonegramequivalent
weightofasubstanceatthecathodeofanelectrochemicalcellandoxidizesonegram
equivalentweightofasubstanceattheanode.Thiscorrespondstothegainorloss,and
thereforethepassage,ofAvogadrosnumberofelectrons.
