African wild dog
The African wild dog (lycaon pictus) is also sometimes called the African hunting dog, the painted wolf,
mbwa mwitu (Swahili), wildehond (Afrikaans), and co selvagem (Portuguese).
The wild dog has a distinctive coat. The patterns on the coat are black, yellow and white. No two dogs have
the same pattern. Adults usually weigh between 17-36 kilograms and they stand about 75 centimetres high at
the shoulders. These animals are carnivores with 42 teeth. They reproduce at any time of the year, bearing
litters of 2-19 pups at a time. They make a sound that sounds like a bird chirping.
African wild dogs are very sociable animals. They live in packs and they help each other. They also hunt in
large packs. Their prey includes buck like impala, eland, springbok, and other animals like wildebeest and
zebras. They pursue their prey for a long time, running as fast as 45 km/h during a chase. They approach their
prey in packs. They choose one animal and then chase the animal until it is exhausted. Then they kill it. A
chase can last as long as an hour.
