Macedonian belongs to the Indo-European family, Slavonic group, South Slavonic subgroup and is
spoken by over 1.5 million people. Cyrillic script is used. Because there are no clear linguistic divisions
that correspond to the geopolitical divisions in the South Slavic language area, there has been
considerable dispute regarding recognition and classification of this language. As a matter of fact it was
officially recognised in then Yugoslavia as a separate language no earlier than 1943-44.
Modern Macedonian is very closely related to Bulgarian. Like Bulgarian, Macedonian has a definite
article that comes after the noun, and has lost the case system from Common Slavic, the language from
which it descended (cases have been replaced by prepositions). It is important to note that the
translation of the Bible made in the 9th century by Cyril and Methodius (the two monks who invented
the Cyrillic alphabet) into a Bulgarian dialect spoken in Macedonia (called ancient Bulgarian or
Paleoslavic) represents the most ancient document of all Slavic languages.
1. Macedonian Alphabet
Learning the Macedonian alphabet is very important, because its structure is used in every day
conversation. Without it, you will not be able to say words properly even if you know how to write
those words. The better you pronounce a letter in a word, the more understood you will be in speaking
the Macedonian language.
Below is a table showing the Macedonian alphabet and how it is pronounced in English, and finally
examples of how those letters would sound if you place them in a word.

Learning the Macedonian Adverbs is very important, because its structure is used in every day
conversation. The more you master, the closer you get to mastering the Macedonian language. But first
we need to know what's the role of Adverbs in the structure of the grammar in Macedonian.
Macedonian adverbs are part of speech. Generally they're words that modify any part of language other
than a noun. Adverbs can modify verbs, adjectives (including numbers), clauses, sentences and other
adverbs.
Grammar Tips:
While in English adverbs are usually formed by adding (-ly) to adjectives. In Macedonian many
adverbs are formed from adjectives, simply by adding the suffix - to the singular feminine form of
adjectives. Examples:
(slow) becomes (slowly)
(perfect) becomes (perfectly)
However thats not always the case. Some words are adverbs by nature. For example:
(now), (really), and (soon).
Here are some examples:

4.Macedonian Numbers
Learning the Macedonian Numbers is very important, because its structure is used in every day
conversation. The more you master, the closer you get to mastering the Macedonian language. But first
we need to know what's the role of Numbers in the structure of the grammar in Macedonian.
Macedonian cardinal number convey the "how many" they're also known as "counting numbers,"
because they show quantity.
Grammar Tips:
In Macedonian numbers from 1 to 10 are unique and therefore need to be memorized individually.
Numbers from 11-20 are formed by the corresponding number 1-9 plus the suffix -. Exception
for this rule is 16 (look below).
Numbers from 21 and upwards are formed by using the following pattern:
for example 21 can be formed by using 20 + + 1 while connecting them with the conjunction . 22
= . 45 can be formed by using 40 + + 5 while connecting them:
45 = .

7.Macedonian Articles
Learning the Macedonian Articles is very important, because its structure is used in every day
conversation. The more you master, the closer you get to mastering the Macedonian language. But first
we need to know what's the role of Articles in the structure of the grammar in Macedonian.
Macedonian articles are words that combine with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made
by the noun. Generally articles specify the grammatical definiteness of the noun. Examples are "the, a,
and an".
Grammar Tips:
Definite Article:
Like in English, where we have only one definite article the", in Macedonian it is same but the article
changes in accordance with the gender of the noun.
-, -, - (masculine singular), , , (the man, this man, that man)
-, -, - (feminine singular) , , (the house, this house, that house)
-, -, - (neuter singular) , , (the child, this child, that child)
- (), - (), - () (plural) , , (the houses, these houses, those houses)
The suffixes -, -, -, - () are used when the subjects (and persons) are near the
speaker. - Give me this book.
The suffixes , -, -, - () are used when the subjects (and persons) are far from the
speaker. - Give me that book.
Indefinite Article:
While we have (a / an ; some) in English as indefinite articles, we also have //;
in Macedonian.
In general, whenever (a, an) are used in English you dont need to use (, ) or () to say the
equivalent in Macedonian.
, , are used as a substitution for a/an only when a/an are used with the meaning of "one".
The Macedonian equivalent of "some" is .
(a book)
(a house)

Example: . (The books I have are in a house of a

8.Macedonian Pronouns
Learning the Macedonian Pronouns is very important, because its structure is used in every day
conversation. The more you master, the closer you get to mastering the Macedonian language. But first
we need to know what's the role of Pronouns in the structure of the grammar in Macedonian.
Macedonian pronouns include personal pronouns (refer to the persons speaking, the persons spoken to,
or the persons or things spoken about), indefinite pronouns, relative pronouns (connect parts of
sentences) and reciprocal or reflexive pronouns (in which the object of a verb is being acted on by
verb's subject).
Grammar Tips:
In English personal pronouns are (I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they), and (me, you, him, her, it, us, you,
them), In Macedonian, the personal pronouns are:
(I), (you), (he), (she), oa (it)
(we), (you), (they)
Examples: (I learn), (you learn), (he learns), (she learns),
(you learn [polite]), (we learn), (you learn [plural, friendly]),
(they learn), (you learn [plural, polite]).
Indirect Object Pronouns:
Indirect object pronouns are words that replace the indirect object, which is usually a person. In the
Macedonian language, there are long and short forms (used in direct and indirect speech as well)
(me), (you), (him), (her), (it), (us), (you),
(them):
Examples: (give me the book). (I love you).
Possessive Pronouns:
The possessive pronoun depends on the noun. If the noun is masculine gender, the possessive pronoun
must be of masculine gender. The same goes for feminine and neuter gender nouns, as well as for the
plural.

9.Macedonian Plural
Learning the Macedonian Plural is very important, because its structure is used in every day
conversation. The more you master, the closer you get to mastering the Macedonian language. But first
we need to know what's the role of Plural in the structure of the grammar in Macedonian.
Macedonian Plurals are grammatical numbers, typically referring to more than one of the referent in the
real world. In the English language, singular and plural are the only grammatical numbers.
Grammar Tips:
While in English, the plural is formed by adding (s) to the singular. In Macedonian, to form the
plural of nouns and adjectives we add (-) This is the most common way to form the plural. Here are
some examples:
(a friend) becomes: (some friends)
(one woman) becomes: (some women)
(this is my red car) becomes: (these are my red
cars).
Please note that the sentence in singular is different in more than one word from the sentence in plural this is because with sentences - some of the auxiliary verbs and adjectives undergo a change in plural (e
= -> auxiliary verb / = -> adjective)
Furthermore, different nouns in Macedonian receive different suffixes while making the plural form.
1. The masculine gender noun receives these suffixes: - , -, -/-:
(column columns)
(knife knives)
(father fathers)
The suffixes -, -/- are less common.

Learning the Macedonian Verbs is very important, because its structure is used in every day
conversation. The more you master, the closer you get to mastering the Macedonian language. But first
we need to know what's the role of Verbs in the structure of the grammar in Macedonian.
Macedonian verbs are words that convey action (bring, read, walk, run), or a state of being (exist,
stand). In most languages a verb may agree with the person, gender, and/or number of some of its
arguments, such as its subject, or object.
Grammar Tips:
-
Present Tense ( )
In Macedonian, verbs take the following endings to form the present tense:
-, , (, ) - /, -, -, -.
Example:
verb (play)
, , (, ) , , , .
These endings can help you a lot, because with them you can conjugate most of verbs into the present
tense, you only need the stem of the verb, for example the stem of : to play) is ().
-
Past Tense ( )
In Macedonian simple past tense (imperfect) is used to describe past event in its duration but the
completion of the event is not included. The endings for the past tense - imperfect verbs are:
-, -, (, ) -, -, -, -/-.
Example :
, , (, ) , , , .
So just take any regular verb stem and add it to the endings above, for example our previous verb
(to play), its stem is , plus the endings above becomes (I platyed).
-
Past Tense ( )
In Macedonian simple past tense ( - ) is used to describe past event and its
completion. The endings for the past tense - aorist verbs are:
-, -/, (, ) -/, -, -, -/-.
Example :
, , (, ) , , , .
So just take any regular verb stem and add it to the endings above, for example our previous verb
(to play), its stem is , plus the endings above becomes (I platyed).
-
Future Tense ( )
he future tense in Macedonian describes an event that will be done after the moment of
speaking. It is formed as follows:
+ verb in present simple (imperfect) form
, , (, ) / / /
