Farm tap style regulators just took a technological leap

forward with Mooney FlowTap Series Regulators. FlowTap
Regulators feature more usable capacity, improved shut-off
and full capacity relief. FlowTap Regulators can control pressure of natural gas, air and a variety of other gases for set
points up to 250 psi, and flow rates up to 58000 scfh.

FlowTap Regulators are available in three

different configurations:
FlowTap-Std. (Internal Sense): This is the standard design
which internally senses outlet pressure to maintain an accurate
control set point.
FlowTap-M (Monitor/Remote Sense): This design allows for
remote sensing of the control pressure through an 1/4 NPT
connection and control line connected 8 to 10 pipe diameters
downstream of the regulator.
FlowTap-R (Relief): This design incorporates a full capacity
relief* valve attached to the diaphragm case assembly to
protect a downstream system from over-pressurization;
eliminating the need for a separate relief valve.
*Refer to inlet pressure limitations and relief capacity charts.

Innovative Four-Bar Linkage Assembly

Unmatched performance is achieved because of an innovative
variable rate linkage that maximizes valve stroke and allows the
FlowTap to droop less and flow more than comparable devices
at the same set point. A built in mechanical advantage for extra
closing force pushes the plug seal onto the orifice seat to
assure bubble-tight shut-off.
Less droop
Extra shut-off force
Robust SST Construction

Split Spring Case Design

Four-bar Linkage

Changing springs is easy and can be accomplished without

depressurizing the regulator. Companies can stock fewer
regulators and simply keep an assortment of springs for each
application. Verifying the actual spring installed in the regulator
is no longer a difficult task.

Larger Diaphragm
A larger than average effective area aids sensitivity and
increases shut-off force.

Robust Construction
The diaphragm casing has a full 250 psig rating. A built-in
hard stop limits diaphragm stroke preventing damage in case
the outlet system is accidentally over-pressured.

Full Capacity Relief

Split Spring Case Design

FlowTap Relief Regulator incorporates a high capacity relief

device designed to have enough capacity to prevent a system
from being over-pressured.*
* Refer to the relief capacities section of this brochure for details.

Orientation
FlowTap Regulators may be installed in any position. Additionally
the actuator may be rotated in four positions relative to the valve
body to accommodate a variety of space constraints.*
* Refer to installation instructions and recommendations.

A lock-nut on the adjusting screw prevents set point changes

due to vibration and deters tampering.

Principle of Operation
FlowTap Regulators are self-operated pressure reducing regulators only (ie: they can only
control downstream pressure). It is a force balanced device in that spring compression
produces a force that directly opposes the force created by outlet pressure acting on the
surface area of the diaphragm. FlowTap valve assemblies (plug, seal, and orifice) are
connected to the spring and diaphragm assembly by a four-bar linkage designed to maximize valve stroke for a small amount of diaphragm movement. When downstream demand
increases, outlet pressure drops and diaphragm force is reduced, allowing spring force to
move the valve plug away from the orifice resulting in an increased flow through the valve.
When demand is satisfied, outlet pressure under the diaphragm increases and the resulting
force pushes the valve plug onto the orifice shutting off flow through the valve.

Closed Position

Open Position

Relief Option
The relief assembly bolts onto the diaphragm case
of the FlowTap - R Regulator. Spring compression
produces a spring force that directly opposes the
pressure force acting across the surface area of the
relief valve plug. In the normally closed condition
the spring force exceeds the pressure force on the
seat and the relief valve is closed.

Closed Position

When outlet pressure exceeds the set-point of the relief

valve, the force of outlet pressure on the seat exceeds
the spring force and the valve opens, to protect the
downstream system from over-pressurization. The
relief valve reseats and shuts off when the outlet
pressure decreases to the relief valve reseat pressure.

Droop
FlowTapRegulators are self-operated regulators that require a drop in outlet pressure in order to open.
Expect a 5-13% drop in outlet pressure (droop) in order to achieve full capacity of the regulator, the actual
percentage being dependent on the set point, spring range and orifice size selected.

Monitor Capacity*

Over-Pressure Protection

Table 7
Two Regulators in Series

.707 (x SCFH)

* Special sizing consideration must be made for monitor

regulator sets. An approximate 30% loss of capacity occurs
when two equal size regulators are piped in series. Multiply
the flow rate by a factor of .707 if two regulators with equal
size orifices are used in series.

All FlowTap Regulators have an outlet pressure rating

(250 psi) that is less than the inlet pressure rating.
If the inlet pressure exceeds the outlet pressure
rating then some form of over pressure protection
is required to protect the FlowTap Regulator from
being over-pressured.
Refer to United States Department of Transportation
Pipeline Safety Regulations, Research and Special
Programs Administration, Natural Gas Part 192 and/or
other applicable local or governmental codes for
specific overpressure protection relief requirements.
5

The sizing charts on pages 6 & 7 indicate the maximum flow rate through the valve under the given conditions. It is
recommended that the maximum valve flowrate be 20% greater than the maximum required flow rate for the application.

Relief Capacity

Relief Set Point

FlowTap-R Regulators incorporate a high capacity

relief valve that is designed to have enough capacity to
prevent a system from being over-pressured.

Expect the relief valve to re-seat 5 psig below the relief

set point. The regulator set point should be set far
enough below the relief set point to accommodate for
re-seat pressure and regulator lock-up.

The Maximum Fail Open Capacity of the regulator

(pages 6 and 7) should be less than Maximum Relief
Capacity Available in order to protect the downstream
system from being over pressured.
Relief capacities may be calculated using the Universal
Gas Sizing Equation and the sizing coefficients provided
in Table 6.
See Graph 1 for Relief Valve sizing.

The FlowTap regulator relief valve requires a build-up

of outlet pressure to achieve maximum capacity. Expect
a 5 psig build-up of system pressure for maximum
relief capacity.
NOTE: For overpressure situations that do not require
full capacity of the relief valve, the valve will only open
as much as necessary to maintain its set pressure.

Regulator Inlet Pressure P1 (psig)

Graph 1: This graph indicates the lowest setting of the relief valve that can maintain full capacity relief with choked
flow across the selected FlowTap regulator orifice size. This graph represents calculated values, and can be applied
to all gases in Table 8. Contact a Mooney representative when using relief set points below 25 psig.
