Please hand in your home work before class, have it neatly written (the grader
will not decipher your notes but will give you zero points), stapled, with your name
and student ID on top.
Problem 1. Calculate the impact velocity if you jump down from a 7 foot wall
(ignore air drag). How long does it take to reach the ground?
Problem 2. In a zero-gravity environment with an atmosphere identical to Earths
(e.g. in the ISS) you horizontally shoot an arrow ow mass 375 grams from a bow
with initial speed 85 m/sec. Use the model that the air resistance is proportional
to the square of the velocity of the arrow with drag coefficient = 1. Answer the
following questions:
(i) How far does the arrow fly in the first 5, 10, 20, 30 seconds?
(ii) What are the velocities of the arrow after 5, 10, 20, 30 seconds?
(iii) Will the arrow ever come to a standstill and hover in mid air or fly on
forever? How far does the arrow fly without any obstacles?
(iv) Assuming that an arrow of speed 10m/s does not harm anymore, how
distant should you place your friend and shoot at her w/o harming her?
Problem 3. How high does a vertically upwards thrown stone with initial push
of 5 m/sec fly? (Assume the stone is launched from the ground and ignore air
resistance).
Problem 4. The population of the US was 8.6 Million in 1820 and 40 Million in
1897.
(i) Write down the differential equation for population growth according to
the following model: the rate of change of the population at any given
time is proportional to the population present at that time.
(ii) Calculate the number of people in the US according to your model in the
year 2003. How well does this growth model work: the actual population
of the US in 2003 was 291 Million.
(iii) How long does it take for the population in the US to double according to
your growth model?
