RESEARCH INTERESTS
From 2002 until 2008, I worked as Research Associate at the Satake Centre for Grain Process
Engineering (School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, University of Manchester, UK;
formerly UMIST). During that time, my main research focus was the development of viable cerealbased biorefineries for the production of food and non-food (biofuels, platform chemicals and
biodegradable plastics) products. I have employed fundamental principles of biochemical engineering
for the development of sustainable biorefining strategies that combined physical and biological
processing. I have developed expertise in cereal bioprocessing, microbiology, fermentation technology,
enzymatic biocatalysis, modelling and process design/costing. I have used various microorganisms
including bacteria, fungi and yeasts used for the production of lactic acid (Lactobacillus plantarum,
Rhizopus oryzae), ethanol (Saccharomyces sereviciae), succinic acid (Actinobacillus succinogenes),
polyhydroxybutyric acid (Cupriavidus necator) and enzymes (Aspergillus awamori and Aspergillus
oryzae for the production of amylase and protease). My research focussed on the optimisation and
design of processing systems as well as individual unit operations.
Since January 2009, I am working as Lecturer at the Department of Food Science and Technology in
the Agricultural University of Athens. My current research focus on the development of sustainable and
viable biorefineries utilising food processing and agro-industrial wastes as well as other renewable raw
materials for the production of biofuels, chemicals, biodegradable polymers (e.g. polyhydroxyalkanoates)
and various value-added products. I exploit modeling, process design and costing tools to develop novel
sustainable biorefineries or restructure current industrial processes by integrating physical, chemical and
biological processing of renewable raw materials.
