Abstract

The events following the 9/11 terrorist attacks have every American on the edge of their seats

when they board an airplane. Most people are fearful that another attack will occur, however

they are unaware of when it will happen. President Obama’s job is to ensure that every American

is safe from harm. However, he can not make sure every aspect is secured every hour of the day.

Most terrorist may give warnings before they plan to attack. President Obama’s office may be

filled with these terrorist threats but should he inform Americans on every threat that he receive?

President Obama should not inform Americans on every threat. However, he should place more

security in the areas that are targeted to attacks.

Introduction:

http://www.ask500people.com/questions/do-you-believe-mrobamahis-administration-is-

withholding-information-that-there-could-possibly-be-another-terrorist-attack#votes

I. Description of problem:

The attacks made on the Twin Towers and the World Trade Center had every

American in tears. Many lost friends, co-workers and relatives. This attack shocked

millions and also had millions wondering why. Every since these attacks, people have

been fearful in boarding airplanes. Many believed that Mr. Bush did not handle the

situation properly. Now, with the current president in office, many may wonder how he

would respond if another attack was to occur. Recently, a young African male attempted

to set off an explosion in his lap on the airplane. This tightened the security in the

airports, but is that enough? Many wonder will they be safe from harm from any potential

attacks.

Americans want to be informed on what is going on and when the next terrorist

attack might occur. President Obama is not obligated to inform Americans about every

threat that is against the United States of America. This would have people more afraid to

walk outside of their houses. Many do not want to relive the experiences that they had to

face during September 11. President Obama does have the responsibility to make sure

that every plane, train or boat that carries Americans are secured from harm.

The world suffers from violence everyday. It may be crimes against other

Americans or attacks made by people from other countries. Everyday a person dies from

some careless and senseless act. Everyone is entitled to protection from danger. When

there is an attack made that will affect millions, it is the role of the President to ensure
Ask 500 4

that these attacks will not happen and that everyone is safe. President Obama receives

threats daily, however, he should not inform Americans about every threat that he

receives. It is important that we remain confident that our President will protect us.

II. Attributes to be measured:

Using the Ask500.com website, I will be able to see how other people across the

world will respond to my question. I am curious to see if others believe President Obama

and his administration is withholding information that there may be another terrorist

attack. Since the recent attempts and the September 11 attacks, many Americans may be

skeptical on what will happen next. They may be curious as to where the attack will take

place. Then, there may be other Americans who are hopeful and believe that another

attack will not happen.

The few people who believe that another attack may not happen may believe that

it was just the leadership that caused the attacks. They may not be aware of the past

attacks that were made on the United States. Mr. Bush did not reacted to the situation

properly, however, there were also other presidents who were placed in the same position

in one point of their presidential term. The history of terrorist attacks is evident that there

are some people who do not agree with the decisions that are made in the United States.

Nevertheless, there are few that are hopeful that issues with the U.S. and other countries

could be resolved in a peaceful manner.

The past attacks made on the United States place Americans in an uncomfortable

situation. There are some who believe there will be another attack. These individuals

have arguments to back up their opinions to the situation. They may want to know when

it will happen and where would it happen. These individuals may want to prepare for the
Ask 500 5

worst if something was to happen. On the other hand, there may be individuals who are

hopeful that nothing will happen and President Obama will protect the U.S. Despite what

side Americans may fall on, it will be best for President Obama to keep the threats, but

increase protection in targeted areas.

III. Hypotheses, expectations, or research questions:

I expect for the majority of the votes to be “yes” responses. I believe the world

knows that there are some other countries that do not like American and want to harm the

people that live here. The responses will also tell the income and the education status of

the individuals who responded to the question. I think older individuals would believe

that President Obama is withholding information about a terrorist attack because they

may have lived to experience an attack or they may have witnesses an attack from first-

hand accounts. The individuals who are younger may not be aware, if they do not tune

into local and national news.

The respondents’ level of education may also play a factor in their answer choice.

Individuals who have a higher education level may also believe that the president is

withholding information about terrorist attacks. These individuals may be more

knowledgeable of the history of attacks made on the United States. They may also know

about the conflicts that exist between the United States and other countries. Individuals

who have less education may not be aware of the conflicts between the U.S. and other

countries. These respondents may not read the newspaper or view the news channels. It is

important to be informed about what is going on in the world that we live in.

IV. Rationale:
Ask 500 6

The results from the survey question may have high rates of “yes” responses. The

results may be reflected on the respondents’ age and their education level. The more

mature respondents may be informed on the issues that have occurred and are occurring

in the United States. The respondents may know the history of past attacks or attempts

that were made on the U.S. Also, the conflicts of the United States and other countries

have not been resolved, therefore, the tension may still be building between the two

countries. Younger respondents may have voted based on what they may have heard and

not what they know about the situations. Younger respondents may be reluctant to

educate themselves on the problems that the United States have with the other countries.

Some of this history of attacks are taught in classrooms, however, if the student did not

listen to the lecture or if they forgot, then how would they know about it? Older

respondents are more willing to research what is going on in the news because it may

eventually affect them and their future plans. Many changes can come about after an

attack is made on United States’ soil. Older respondents may want to know if there will

be an increase in taxes or cuts in various places that would go to rebuilding the damaged

structure or providing assistance to the individuals who had to suffer from the attack.

Nevertheless, older respondents may be more concerned with these matters than younger

respondents.

Graphs:

This graph is a representation of the respondents overall view on the proposed question.

57% of the respondents did not believe that President Obama is withholding information that

there could be another terrorist attack. On the other hand, 43% of the respondents believe that

President Obama is withholding information. The expectations were that there would be more

“yes” responses from the respondents. This expectation was made based on prior knowledge

about the United States’ conflicts with other countries and past attacks. Most of the respondents

are hopeful that another attack will not happen.

Ask 500 9

This graph is a representation of the respondents’ responses based on their age. The

expectations that were given were proved to be incorrect. The respondents in the age group of

26-35 had a rate of 31.2% who said that President Obama is withholding information about a

possible terrorist attack. The respondents who were in the age group of 65 and over had the

fewest votes. Only 5% of these respondents responded with “yes” to the question asked. The

younger respondents in the 18-25 age group had an 8% yes responses and 12% no responses

vote. The older the respondents were, the less likely it was for them to believe that the

government is withholding information about a future terrorist attack.

It is believed that the older the respondents were, the less likely they are concerned with

what will happen to the United States. This does not mean they do not have faith in the

government to protect us, it may be the fact that they may believe that if another attack was to

happen, then it will just be fate. Older respondents may have lived through the experience and

may know the trend in the attacks. They may do not believe it will be an attack soon, but it will

not be a surprise if one was to happen. Younger respondents may be on the edge to see if it will

happen and to see how President Obama will respond.

Ask 500 10

This graph above is a representation of the respondents’ responses based on their

education level. 25% of high school respondents said that the government is withholding

information that there could possibly be another terrorist attack. 18% of respondents with a

Bachelors’ degree agreed that the president is withholding information, followed by 15% of

respondents with a Masters’ Degree and 3% of respondents with a Doctorate Degree. On the

other hand, 3% of high school respondents, 9% of Associates’ Degree respondents, 20% of

Bachelors’ Degree 8% of Masters’ Degree and 5% of Doctorate Degree respondents said that

President Obama is not withholding information about a possible terrorist attack.

It was expected that the respondents with higher education level would believe that

President Obama and his administration is withholding information about a possible terrorist

attack. The respondents with higher education may have been more informed about the history

of the United States and the attacks in the past. Also they may have been aware of the conflicts

that exist between the United States and other countries. It was also expected that younger

respondents would not have been aware of the conflicts nor are they tuned in to local and

national news. However, these expectations were once again proven to be incorrect with the

evidence in the graph above.

Ask 500 11

The graph above represents the income of the respondents to the proposed question. 12%

of respondents whose income level is less than $20K believed that President Obama is

withholding information about a possible terrorist attack. 8% of the respondents in the same

category disagreed that President Obama has information about a possible terrorist attack. The

highest responses were from the respondents with an income of $20K-39K. 19.6% of these

respondents believe President Obama have information about a future attack. The respondents in

the income level of $60K-$79K and $80k-$99K both had a split response of 5% and 10%. The

respondents who made over $100k only had 3% to agree to the question and 5% to disagree.

It was believed that the income level of the respondents would have an effect on the

responses to the proposed question. Respondents with a higher income level would be more

concerned with the future of the United States. Any future attacks would place a hold on the

spending and taxes of the Americans. This could have an effect on their money and cause them

to have to put money into the structure that was destroyed. The respondents with low income

would not be able to afford any tax increases because they may be in a hardship already.
