PVEliteandCodeCalcincludeaninterfaceforfiniteelementanalysis(FEA)ofnozzletoshelljunctions.Thisanalysisuses
anencapsulatedfiniteelementprogramavailablefromPaulinResearchGroup.ThisinterfaceisavailablewithintheWRC107
moduleofPVEliteandCodeCalc.
Whenitisnecessarytodetermineshellstressesattheedgeofanattachment(likeapipenozzletovesselintersection)due
toexternalloads,engineerstypicallyturntoWeldingResearchCouncilBulletin107.However,therearetimeswhenthe
applicabilityofthisbulletinisinquestionoraparticulardesignisoutofthescopeofthebulletin.Atypicalexamplemightbe
alargenozzle.Whenthenozzlediameterdividedbytheshelldiameterisgreaterthan0.33,manyofthecurvesinWRC107
mayneedtobeextrapolated.Doingsomayleadtononconservativeresults.Inthiscaseandothers,FEAistheoneofthe
bestknownwaystogetaccurateresults.OtherexampleswhereanFEAcanbeusefularevesseltypesnotaddressedby
WRC107,includingthosewithreinforcingpads,hillsideandlateralnozzles.
FEAisapowerfultoolwhenusedcorrectly.Usersshouldhaveanunderstandingofthemethodandtheexperiencetobuild
therightfiniteelementmodel.Alongwiththetimeconstraints,engineerssometimesfinditchallengingtoexploitthefull
benefitsofFEA.TheFEA'BlackBox'easestheseconcernsbyprovidingrelativelyeasyinput,automaticmeshing,andthe
resultsforcodestresschecksalongwithotherfiniteelementresults.
Note:YouhavetopurchasetheNozzleProprogramfromPaulinResearchGroup,www.paulin.comandinstallitbefore
proceedingfurther.NozzleProcanbeinstalledinanydirectory.

SetthepathtotheNozzleProinstallationdirectory,fromtheToolsmenu=>Configuration.Seethefigurebelow:

Then,selecttheWRC107moduleandsettheanalysistypeasFEA.Next,thenozzlegeometryinformationisentered.
Nozzlescanbeintegrallyreinforcedorpadreinforcedandcanbeoftheinsertorabuttingtypeasshowninthefigurebelow:
PVEliteuserscanalsoimportthenozzledetailfromthetheirPVElitefileintoCodeCalc.

OntotheVesseltab,theavailablevesseltypesareconical,cylindrical,elliptical,flat,hemisphericalandtorispherical.
Dependinguponthetypeofthevesselspecified,additionaldatawillberequiredtocompletetheinputfortheshellorhead.
WeshallconsidertheinputsinGLOBALunits.Hereweareconcernedwiththeorientationofthevessel,andtheorientation
ofthenozzle(orattachment).WehavetoconsiderthetheDIRECTIONCOSINESUndertheloadstab,loadsandthevessel
andnozzleorientationsareentered.Forthisexampleassumethatthevesselisvertical(1,0,0)andthenozzleisalongtheX
axis(0,1,0)andthe+Yaxisisup,+Xaxisisrightand+Zaxisiscomingtowardsyou.Leavetheotherinputsblankfornow,
theyareforspecialcasessuchasahillsidenozzle.
