ADVANCED CATHODIC

PROTECTION
CONCEPTS COURSE
19-20 November 2015 | Adelaide
Supported by:

Cathodic Protection (CP) is about to be subject to major

changes in the way we interpret protection and understand
its mechanism. It will change our precepts and challenge our
traditional beliefs. The course is designed for experienced
CP specialists and NACE Level 3 certified professionals.
The course will explain and investigate why:
We have observed cathodic protection at potentials as positive as
-350mV Cu/CuSO4.
We have observed corrosion at potentials as negative as -1000mV
Cu/CuSO4.
AC corrosion proceeds more rapidly the more negative the CP potential.
Larger %IR DCVG results reveal smaller defects than lower %IR
DCVG results.
Our criteria for stray current corrosion may sometimes be
dramatically relaxed.
Our criteria for CP interference may sometimes be dramatically relaxed.
An off potential on a coupon of +400mV Cu/CuSO4 is a good result.
Obtaining CP in soft water is problematic.
Researchers working on stray current corrosion criteria have changed
their approach.
Those attending the course will also receive copies of two software
programs written by Markus:
One is used in the paper M. Bchler, A New Perspective on Cathodic
Protection Criteria Promotes Discussion, Materials Performance 54,
No 1, 44 (2015). For inputs of soil resistivity, soil type, defect size, ON
potential and AC potential it draws a Pourbaix Diagram and Evans
Diagram showing where the defect lies in terms of DC corrosion and
CP, and provides graphs of AC & DC ON potentials and current densities
indicating its AC corrosion status.
he second program replaces attenuation equations for designing CP
T
by allowing for variations along the pipeline in the number and size
of defects, pipe wall thickness and diameter, soil resistivity, CP unit
locations, drain point potenials and AC potentail. The pipeline can be
broken into any number of nodes to allow for such changes. The output
for each node is the same as the first program plus it gives graphs of the
CP unit currnet demand and ON potential along the pipeline route.
