Public Sector Employment and Graduate


Programs
There are many Government departments and agencies which
both recruit graduates and offer graduate programs. These
can be at federal, state and local levels.
Australian Government

Check out the graduate opportunities in Australian
Government agencies. They usually advertise graduate
employment opportunities between February and June each
year. As well as appearing on www.aps.gov.au, opportunities
will be listed on individual agency websites.
You can research government graduate program
opportunities under the following agencies: Agriculture,
Attorney-Generals, Communications, Defence, Education,
Employment, Environment, Finance, Foreign Affairs and
Trade, Health, Immigration and Border Protection, Industry,
Infrastructure and Regional Development, Parliament of
Australia, Prime Minister and Cabinet, Social Services and
Treasury.
Australian Bureau of Statistics - www.abs.gov.au
The ABS Graduate Development Program (GDP) provides
training to help quickly build capability to become effective in
the ABS environment. The program involves structured formal
training and development activities. Psychology graduates are
specifically identified.

Australian Federal Police- www.afp.gov.au


The AFP offers a graduate program to those who are in their
last year of study or have recently completed a bachelors
degree. Located in Canberra and running for 12 months the
program recruits psychology graduates.
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare

AIHW is the national agency set up to provide information
on Australias health and welfare, through statistics and data
development that inform discussion and decisions on policy
and services.
AIHW work closely with all State, Territory and Australian
Government health, housing and community services
agencies in collecting, analysing and disseminating data.
AIHW recruits graduates in June and July annually.
Australian National Audit Office- www.anao.gov.au
ANAO specialises in providing audit and assurance services
to the Parliament and Commonwealth public sector agencies
and statutory bodies.ANAO offers a graduate program which
accept graduates with conceptual and analytical abilities,
strong communication and writing skills.
Australian Secret Intelligence Service - www.asis.gov.au
The Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) is Australias
overseas secret human intelligence collection agency. Their
mission is to protect and promote Australias vital interests
through the provision of unique foreign intelligence service.
ASIS recruits graduates in February each year.

Department of Child Protection and Family Support

The Department of Child Protection and Family Support hires
a range of graduates. There are also some roles which may not
require completion of a degree as well as placement programs
for current students. All information can be found under the

Information regarding the graduate program can be found
on health jobs tab which is under the about us heading.
Applicants must have an interest in health. Graduates are
required to have an undergraduate degree in at least one of
many disciplines, including psychology. Applications open
early April.

organisations develops your technical industry skills and is a
great opportunity to begin a professional network. Sometimes

resources. The graduate program may lead to employment in

Deloitte is a top 100 employer which provides audit,
economics, financial advisory, human capital, tax and
technology services. They recruit psychology graduates and
also offer summer vacation and graduate programs. The
vacation program accepts penultimate (second last) year
students while the graduate program is designed for students
who are in their last year of study and want to commence the
program after graduation.
Ernst and Young - www.ey.com/au/careers
EY specialises in a range of advisory, tax and assurance
services. They offer winter and summer vacation programs to
students in their penultimate year. Those who wish to apply
for the graduate program must be in their final year of study or
apply within 18 months of graduation. Applications open early
July each year. All programs accept psychology students with
an organisational psychology focus.

KMPG provides audit, tax and advisory services. Penultimate
year students can apply to a summer vacation program.
Students who are in their last year or recent graduate may
apply for the graduate program. More information on these

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) - www.pwc.com.au
PwC specialises in assurance, advisory, tax and legal services.
They have both graduate and vacation programs. Applications
for both open February each year. There are also International
student programs.

Telstra recruits graduate and offers summer vacation and
graduate programs. The graduate program applications open
in March each year while the summer vacation applications

UNIQLO is one of the brands which is a part of the Fast
Retailing company. They offer a graduate program which
focuses on developing skills to become a Store Manager

Lifeline runs an intensive course for those who wish to become
a volunteer telephone crisis supporter. Some of the courses

Volunteer Training Programs


There are many opportunities to complete volunteer training
programs with not-for-profit organisations which can be found

Successful applicants attend weekly training sessions for
18 weeks. They will learn counselling skills from specialists
in the drug and alcohol area. After training is completed
