PRODUCTIVITY
Evaluating print productivity is not as simple as timing copy
jobs. The printing process involves several steps and can
be affected by a variety of factors along the way.
The document must first be spooled by the print driver into
a PCL or PostScript file. The PCL or PostScript file is then
sent to the printer where it is raster image processed
(RIPped) into image data by the device processor. The
image data is then sent to the marking engine and output
as printed pages.
There are three obvious factors highlighted above (spool
time, RIP time, and print engine speed), which can all
make or break a devices overall productivity. Other
factors include concurrency and contention; for instance,
print speed may slow down when the device is being used
for other functions, such as scanning.
However, it is possible to time and compare these factors
through the use of careful preparation, conditioning and
testing.
Following are charts that show printing
performance when tested under controlled conditions.
The OKI C711 color printer features print speeds of up
to 34 ppm in Color and 36 ppm Monochrome mode. OKI
has rated time to first page as fast as 9 seconds in color
and 8 seconds in monochrome.
The OKI C711 also features a 533 MHz processor which
contributes to the devices printing power.
OKI's combined multilevel LED print-heads and microfine toner make up its HD Color Printing Technology. The
use of this technology contributes to the C711's sharp
detail and rich color depth. The C711 also features 1200 x
600 dpi print resolution.
Adding to the devices overall value is its rated duty cycle
of up to 100,000 pages per month.
This device offers standard duplex (2-Sided) printing on
the C711dn and C711dtn models and is offered as an
option on the C711n.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
Workgroup devices sold through retail and traditional IT
distribution outlets usually are maintained by office workers
who change the all-in-one cartridge units that encase the
entire imaging system, including the toner cartridge (or the
ink cartridges employed by ink-jet imaging systems). Units
sold through resellers and dealers are usually maintained
by office workers and/or trained service engineers. While
separate long-life parts are more complex to install (i.e.,
separate toner cartridges, imaging drums, transfer belts),
they tend to cost less than low- yield, all-in-one
alternatives.
Toner or Ink Replacement
Changing the toner, imaging cartridge or ink cartridge is a
necessary task that is traditionally is avoided by some for
fear of toner dust or ink leaking on clothing or hands, or the
fear that it might be too complicated. However, most units
today offer clean replacement of toner or ink supplies, and
there is very little risk of toner or ink leakage. Usually the
replacement process is usually easy.

The user then lifts the toner cartridge up and out, and then
carefully lowers the new cartridge into the slot. Next, the user
pushes the blue lever back into the locked position, and, last,
lowers the top cover. The cartridges and slots are color-coded,
so that it is virtually impossible to install the wrong cartridge in a

DEVICE MANAGEMENT
An efficient device-management software system is critical
in order to take maximum advantage of a devices feature
set, be it a printer, fax, scanner or multifunctional
peripheral (MFP).
Device management is typically provided via a Web server
on the device controller. This Web server is accessed
using any desktop Web browser. The user simply enters
the devices IP address into the address line of their Web
browser. Note that administrators and office users have
different management and monitoring needs.
With the paper drawers, the user squeezes and then slides the
guide into the appropriate position.

Summing Up
OKI Printing Solutions product family has expanded with the latest product introduction, the OKI C711dtn
color workgroup printer. Dealers looking to pick up new products to add to their line and potential
customers looking for a new robust desktop workgroup printer should certainly take a look at this device.
This new A4 color printer is designed for mid-size to large offices and enterprises. As such, the C711dtn
workgroup color printer demonstrated highly competitive productivity and great overall image quality in
testing.
With its low introductory price of $1,449 for the top of the line model, this unit features advance security,
tight controls over printing costs, job accounting, color access policy manager, great image quality and
well suited print performance, destined to match the needs of most organizations. During BERTLs
extensive testing of the C711dtn, this office-color, LED- printer performed exceptionally well. BERTL
observed the following when testing the C711dtn:
Tested First Page Out Time (FPOT) as fast as 11.17 seconds using the PCL driver.
Tested simplex black-and-white network-printer productivity was as fast as 39.1 ppm, using the XPS
driver. BERT's performance results exceeded OKI Printing Solutions rated print speed 3.1 second.
Tested duplex black-and-white network-printer speed of up to 39.0 ppm using the XPS driver.
Simplex productivity in color mode was as fast as 36.4 ppm using the PCL driver.
Tested duplex color network-printer speed of up to 28.5 ppm using the PCL driver.
BERTL analysts were impressed with the small file sizes generated when using the XPS driver.
Overall image quality was highly competitive: output displayed above-average resolution, aboveaverage halftones, above-average line and dot control (essential for printing fine detail), and
competitive photographic quality. The OKI C711dtn also offers users better color quality control over
their color output. The Color Swatch and Color Correct features enhance the printers color capability.
To help control the costs associated with printing in color, the C711 offers Job Accounting and Color
Access Policy Manager (CAPM) which lets provides added you control and monitoring of color usage.
C400Pppppppp
Policies can be created to defined who can print and what gets printed. Access levels can be
assigned by user name, PC/server name, application, file name and web sites.
In the ease-of-use department, the C711dtn was easy to operate and maintain, from using print
drivers, software, device management utilities, to replacing paper and maintenance items.
Also noted with the C711dtn are the added security features built into this device. The C711 printer is
equipped with a 16 GB SD memory card which provides enhanced security features that include the
following:
256-Bit Encrypted Secure Print which secures the passage of sensitive documents from the PC to the
printer. This feature requires that the user enter a PIN identification number when processing the job
and releasing it from the printer. Additional security includes a Job Timeout feature that if a document
is not retrieved from the printer within a certain time (pre-set by the user), the document is sanitized
and cleared from the units memory.
MAC Validation or Message Authentication Code (MAC) is an encryption method added at the PC into
a documents printing data to prevent the file from being tampered with after it is sent to the printer.
The printer reads the code and, if any alterations to the file are detected, issues a warning and
cancels the job.
In addition, this latest product offering features versatile media handling: all paper sources accept up
to 8.5 x 14 paper, while the bypass tray accepts 3" x 5" index cards up to 8.5" x 52" banner-size
pages; banners can be used for signage and promotional materials. The bypass tray can also be
used to print on heavy stock up to 140 lb. index (250 gsm).
Considering OKI Printing Solutions C711dtn exceptional overall performance in testing, great ease of use,
great office-color image quality, and exceptional print performance, BERTL awards the OKI C711dtn its
Five Star Exceptional rating and highly recommends the device for workgroups that require a reliable and
fully loaded color workgroup printer.
