Overview
The SS6800 Line Management System (LMS) is primarily a Depth recorder system but has
the flexibility to also record line speed, line tension, two wellhead pressures and GPS data
throughout a well survey. This unit is an integral part of the memory production logging
system. The primary application is for recording Depth Vs Time data in order to be merged
with data obtained from the Memory PL tools to create a conventional depth based log.
The SS6800 can also be used as a well operations monitoring system. In this mode the
operator installs and operates the LMS unit the same way and the data serves as a record.

Line Management System Components


Depth and Speed
The Line Management System (LMS) records the depth and speed of a wireline spooling
into, or out of a well bore. In addition, the LMS provides the connection and setup of
external sensors such as tension, pressure, and temperature transducers. The depth, speed,
and external transducers are some of the data that can be displayed and recorded in the
Flash Memory of the LMS unit. However the primary function of this LMS module is to
monitor and record the depth and speed of wireline.
The accurate display and recording of depth and speed is achieved by processing the
response from an optical depth encoder that is attached to a measure wheel.

The LMS unit can be setup to utilize any 5v optical encoder. The measure wheel can also
be calibrated to compensate for the effects of wear.
Operationally, the LMS unit is a battery powered, portable module that can display depth
speed, and many other selectable outputs during a logging survey. Throughout the survey,
the LMS unit records the depth and all other measurements in its internal non-volatile flash
memory at chosen time intervals. When the survey is finished, the flash memory can be
downloaded directly into the PC via the RS-232, or USB port, and onto a removable multimedia flash card. Upon completion of a survey, the data recorded by the depth recorder
and the downhole tool(s) are downloaded to a PC, utilizing the appropriately software,

where both are combined to create a file, or Log Pass that can then be processed and
presented as a conventional log.
Some of the other features of the LMS are discussed below.

Wireline Tension
The wire-line tension is measured by a pressure sensor, which responds the hydraulic
pressure resulting from the tension in the wireline cable. The measured pressure is
multiplied by the appropriate factor, which relates to the angle at which the tension sensor
is with regard to the wireline. The sensor has a 4 20ma output and can be connected to
the LMS unit. The tension sensor is generally tied into the back of the Martin Decker dial.
The output from the tension device can be calibrated at any time using the menu system on
the LMS, or via a connected PC. The LMS unit monitors the sensor at distinct time
intervals as the tension can vary quickly depending on the speed of the wireline, and drag
on the wireline.

Wellhead Pressure and Temperature


Sensors for measuring wellhead, casing/tubing pressure, or temperature sensors can be
attached to the LMS unit for recording their respective measurements. These sensors
provide a 4 20ma output as with the Tension device. The sensors are usually configured
to have a NPT connection with a 4 conductor cable running back to the LMS unit.
Calibrations can be carried out via a PC or calibration parameters entered via the LMS
keypad. The sensors do not necessarily have to be pressures and temperature they can be
any 4 20ma sensors, for example H2S detectors or flow meters.

Global Positioning Sensor (GPS)


A Global Positioning System unit (GPS) can also be included in the LMS unit. The GPS is
read at 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes intervals and the positioning data is then stored in the flash
memory. The GPS system will only work when the LMS is located outside a metal
environment, e.g. not inside a logging unit. If this is a requirement the GPS Arial can be repositioned outside and fed back to the LMS, otherwise the Arial is assembled into the lid of
the LMS.

External Connections

There are 4 connectors labeLCD on the side of the LMS unit:

Any of these can be used at any time. Channel B has been allocated to wellhead tension,
while Channels A & C can be used for any 4 20ma transducer input. The GPS sensor is
built into the unit. The calibrations for these sensors are held within the unit, transferred
there via a PC.

Additional Options
Alarms
The LMS unit can be programmed to make a sound alert when predetermined alarm
conditions are met. The most common are:

Depth setting (i.e., when wireline cable approaches surface or a


restriction)

Cable Speed setting (i.e., when running tools too fast in or out of the
well)

Tension Setting (i.e., to alert user of excessive tension on cable or


tool)
When the alarms are sounding, selecting the Backlight On/Off button on the LMS unit can
turn them off.

Memory Card
Using the menu system the data in Flash memory can be sent to a multimedia memory card,
which can be removed and read by any PC using a card reader. The data on the card is real
time stamped, and in a binary format.

Backlight
If the LMS is required to function in the dark a backlight can be turned on to facilitate
viewing the display. The backlight is turned on or off by depressing the On/Off button on
the front of the LMS

Rechargeable battery packs


The LMS unit has a bank of 1.2-volt rechargeable cells. The unit uses volts to operate, but

Power Control Modes


External 12VDC power
This configuration is typically preferred when the recorder is permanently instalLCD in a
survey/logging unit. The LMS recorder is automatically in this mode whenever external
power is provided through the 12VDC converter, which converts 110/220VAC as
available. In the event that the external power source fails, the internal battery will take
over and no data will be lost.

Internal battery power


This configuration is used for all portable applications or whenever no external power is
available. The recorder is automatically in this mode whenever in ON or RECORD
mode and no external power is provided. A full charging requires about 4 hours. After
4hrs or when the battery is fully charged, the charging circuit will enter into a trickle
charge mode indefinitely. The recorder will run for approximately 24hrs on a fully
charged battery (LCD backlight off).

Power Control Switch


CHARGE mode
The internal battery for the LMS is charging in the charge mode. A full charge requires
about 4 hours. After 4hrs or when the battery is fully charged, the charging circuit will
enter into a trickle charge mode indefinitely. The LMS is still operational while charging
however, the user must use the PC to start and stop the record mode. The charge mode is
indicated by the illumination of the Red Light under the Charge label.

OFF mode
In this mode all power to the recorder is disconnected including the internal battery pack.
This ensures that the battery power will not be drained when the unit is not in use.

ON mode
In this mode all functions of the recorder are operational without data being saved to the
internal flash memory, with one exception: (PC is connected and LMS is set to record to
memory). Use this mode when performing a bench test; demonstrations are any time that
no permanent record is needed.

RECORD mode
This mode is identical to the ON mode with the exception that all data is recorded into the
internal flash memory.

Power Control Testing


On Mode - Turn power switch to the ON position, the LCD will display the Depth,
Speed value and real time clock correctly.
Record Mode - Turn power switch to RECORD, the ** will flash in the lower right
corner of LCD, indicating that the box is recording data into flash memory.
Charge Mode - Turn the power switch to CHARGE, the red charge light will illuminate
indicating that the battery is being charged.
*Note* - If power is lost while recording to memory, once power is restored the unit
will automatically continue recording to memory as per normal.
All critical system parameters are stored in the permanent EEPROM of the LMS unit
and will be used each time it is powered up, even if the battery is drained or has to be
replaced.
The unit is also equipped with a real time clock, which should operate in excess of one
year before battery replacement. Once the battery is replaced, the real time clock will
be reset upon initialization from the attached PC and software.

LMS Depth Recorder Modes


LMS Memory Record Mode
The LMS can be used in a standalone memory record mode when there is no PC/laptop
available at the job-site. The PC is necessary for the initial programming of the LMS unit,
and the subsequent downloading of data after the survey is finished. However, in the
standalone memory record mode the PC is NOT needed during the survey.
In the memory record mode, depth, speed, time as well as data from internal and externally
attached sensors are recorded in the LMS units internal flash-memory where it is stored
until the operator downloads it after the survey. Upon completion of a survey, the operator
can choose to erase the data from flash-memory or append the next surveys data to the end
of the current survey.
Initial set up of the LMS unit requires a PC connected via the RS-232 serial port (or USB).
The PC is needed to upload critical parameters for the measuring systems depth encoder,
and any external sensors to the LMS box to produce processed data displays. The PC is
also needed for downloading the depth, line speed, tension etc. data from the LMS
memory once the survey is complete.
Once the critical parameters have been uploaded to the LMS unit (prior to the survey), the
memory record mode can be initiated by rotating the selector switch on the LMS unit to
RECORD mode, or alternatively choosing the Start Memory Record in the memory
depth encoder window of SparWorks. The moment the unit is switched on, all data (depth,
tension etc.) automatically begins recording to flash-memory and are simultaneously made
available at its serial port. If a PC is connected to the serial port, the depth, speed and other
data can be monitored during the survey. If a PC is not connected to the LMS, all data can
be monitored from the LMS unit.

Real-Time Mode
The real-time mode requires a PC to be attached to the SS6800 LMS via the serial port or
USB connection throughout the survey. In this mode, the data from the depth recorder is
transmitted to the PC, where it is displayed and saved to a file on the PCs hard-drive. The
LMS unit also simultaneously displays the selected depth and sensor data information on its
LCD, and saves it to flash memory if the LMS unit is in the RECORD mode.

Manually Configuring the LMS console


The Depth and Speed functionality can be accessed in the LMS by executing the proper
Menu path. A Menu Guide is located in the lid of the LMS unit to facilitate menu
navigation. An example of the Menu Guide is shown below.

Set Depth
The Set Depth option allows you to set the actual depth displayed on the LMS LCD
Display screen.
1)
Press the Menu Button on the LMS Unit
2)
With the arrow pointing to Set Depth on the menu press the Enter button
3)
Using the Up and Down buttons, set the depth to the correct/desired
value.
4)
Once you have your desired depth displayed, press the Enter button to set
it and return to the display screen.
*Note your depth should now be set to the depth you selected.

Depth Calibration
This option allows the use of the LMS for calibrating the depth encoder and measure wheel
to a depth reference, e.g., mechanical odometer. The calibration synchronizes the depth
encoder to the mechanical odometers depth measurement. To calibrate the depth encoder
using the LMS unit, execute the following:
1)
Start at the Main Menu on the LMS unit
2)
Use the Down button move the cursor arrow to Calibrate Depth then
press the Enter button
3)
This will take you into the Calibrate Depth sub-menu, which requires 3
steps to complete:
a) Set Start Depth
b) Set Stop Depth
c) Calibrate
4)
Set Start Depth - the start depth is usually the zero reference at the
surface, but can be any depth in the Wellbore that can be referenced to a known
depth (mechanical odometer). To set start depth, move the cursor arrow next to the
Set Start Depth selection and push Enter. Press the Up and Up and
Down buttons to set the Start Depth to the mechanical odometer depth reference.
Once you have displayed the correct depth reference, press the Enter button to set
the Calibration start depth. The LMS display returns to the Calibrate Depth Menu
after pressing enter.
5)
Set Stop Depth - the stop depth can be any distance away from the start
depth, however, the greater the distance from the start depth the more accurate the
calibration. Typical depth differences of 500 feet or greater is used to perform a
calibration. To set the stop depth, make sure the cursor arrow points to Set Stop
Depth on the LMS unit then press the Enter button. Use the Up and Down
buttons to set the LMS display to match the mechanical odometer depth. Press
Enter to set the Stop Depth and return to the Calibrate Depth Menu. The
cursor arrow should now point to the Calibrate selection.
6)
Calibrate - once the start and stop depth values of the mechanical odometer
depth reference are entered into the LMS, the encoder calibration is executed by
selecting Calibrate then pressing Enter. Once Enter is depressed a message
is displayed indicating that the calibration was successful, or that the calibration
failed. (Note: If the calibration failed, make sure the encoder is connected properly
to the LMS and start over at item 1 of this section). Upon a successful calibration,
press Enter again to return to the Depth and Speed Display screen.

Display Mode
The Display Mode menu option allows you to choose from the list which data parameters
to display on the LCD. The display selection can be changed during the survey to browse
different data as desired.

Modes
The following modes are achieved by pressing the Menu button and with the arrow
pointing to Display Mode then press Enter. These are the following display modes
which can be selected by using the Up and Down buttons to navigate the arrow and
pressing Enter once you have the arrow positioned.
- Depth, Speed, Date, and Time: This will display the Depth, Speed and Time
- Depth, Speed, Time, and Tension: This will display the Depth, Speed, Time and Tension
- Depth, Speed, and Channel A: This will display the Depth, Speed, and whatever
measurement you have configured to Channel A
- Depth, Speed, and Channel B: This will display the Depth, Speed, and whatever
measurement you have configured to Channel B
- System Volts: This will display the system voltage for the LMS box

- GPS Position: This will display the GPS position of the LMS box

GPS Control
This function allows the user to configure the Global Positioning Sensor (GPS) for use in
the LMS box.

On\Off
The user can toggle between having the GPS on or off. When disabled, power to the GPS
module is OFF thereby reducing the overall power consumption of the LMS unit and
extending the battery run-time. To toggle between the two conditions execute the
following steps:
1)
Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to GPS Control, then press
Enter
2)
Navigate the selection arrow to the GPS ON/OFF menu item and press
Enter
3)
Use the Up and Down buttons to toggle between having the GPS
enabLCD to the On or Off mode.
4)
Once you have the desired mode selected, press the Enter button

Present Position
The user can display the current GPS position of the LMS box by completing the following
steps:
1)
Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to GPS Control, then press
Enter
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons navigate the selection arrow to the
Pres. Position menu item and press Enter
3)
The present GPS position will then be displayed press Enter to return to
the LMS display screen or press Menu to return to the GPS Control menu.

GPS Status
The user can display the current status of the GPS by completing the following steps:
1)
Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to GPS Control, then press
Enter
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons navigate the selection arrow to the
GPS Status menu item and press Enter
3)
The present GPS position will then be displayed press Enter to return to
the LMS display screen or press Menu to return to the GPS Control menu.

Sample Rate
This will allow the user to set the GPS sample rate for the LMS box. You can set the LMS
GPS sample rate to 5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes. This corresponds to the interval at which a
GPS sample is recorded to flash memory. The LMS can record up to 200 samples. Once
200 samples are recorded, the memory gets reused, i.e., the oldest samples are overwritten.
This allows the most recent 200 samples to be recorded. To set the GPS sample rate
complete the following steps:
1)
Press the Menu button on the LMS unit
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons navigate the selection arrow to the
GPS Control option and then press the Enter button
3)
Navigate the selection arrow to the Sample Rate option and then press
Enter
4)
Use the Up and Down buttons to select your desired GPS Sample rate,
once you have selected your desired sample rate press the Enter button and you
will be returned to LMS Display screen.

Record Sample
This will record one current sample from the LMS box. To record a current GPS Sample
complete the following steps:
1)
Press the Menu button on the LMS unit
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons navigate the selection arrow to the
GPS Control option and then press the Enter button
3)
Navigate the selection arrow to the Rec. One Sample option and then press
Enter.

4)
Press Enter to record one sample or press any other button to return to the
GPS Control menu.

Dump to MMC
This option allows the user to copy the LMS Flash memory to a Memory card. This
feature is convenient when the LMS box must be left on site but the data from the previous
survey is needed for immediate processing.

Dump to Card
To dump the LMS units internal memory to an external Flash memory card complete the
following steps:
1)
Insert an external memory card into the memory card slot
2)
Press the Menu button
3)
Navigate the selection arrow using the Up and Down buttons to the
Dump to MMC option, then press the Enter button
4)
Press Up to dump the internal memory onto the memory card or press any
other button to cancel.

Alarm Control
This option allows you to set alarms in the LMS unit, which are triggered if preset
measurements are reached. All alarms can be controlled from the LMS unit.

On\Off
The On\Off selection allows you to toggle the Alarm Control function of the LMS unit.
To toggle the Alarm Control complete the following steps:
1)
Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to Alarm Control, then
press Enter.
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons toggle between the On and Off
position.
3)
Select the desired position press Enter to set, or press Menu to return to
the Alarm Control Menu.

*Note* - the following settings will only function normally and audibly if you have the
Alarm Control in the On position

Depth Setting
This option allows you to set a specified depth alarm, which will provide an audible sound
once a specific depth has been reached. To set an audible depth alarm, complete the
following steps:
1)
Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to Alarm Control, then
press Enter.
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons to navigate the selection arrow to the
Depth Setting option, then press Enter.
3)
Using the Up and Down buttons, set the desired depth you wish to set an
alarm for.
4)
Once you have selected your desired depth press Enter to set the alarm or
press Menu to return to the Alarm Control Menu

Speed Setting
This option allows you to set a specified wireline speed alarm, which will provide an
audible sound once a specific wireline speed has been reached. To set an audible speed
alarm, complete the following steps:
1)
Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to Alarm Control, then
press Enter.
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons to navigate the selection arrow to the
Speed Setting option, then press Enter.
3)
Using the Up and Down buttons, set the desired speed you wish to set an
alarm for.
4)
Once you have selected your desired speed press Enter to set the alarm or
press Menu to return to the Alarm Control Menu

Channel C Tension
This option allows you to set a specified channel tension alarm, which will provide an
audible sound once a specific wireline tension (N) has been reached. To set an audible
tension alarm, complete the following steps:
1)
Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to Alarm Control, then
press Enter.
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons to navigate the selection arrow to the
Channel C Setting option, then press Enter.
3)
Using the Up and Down buttons, set the desired tension (N) you wish to
set an alarm for.
4)
Once you have selected your desired wireline tension (N) press Enter to
set the alarm or press Menu to return to the Alarm Control Menu

Channel A Setting
This option allows you to set a specified wellhead pressure alarm, which will provide an
audible sound once a specific wellhead pressure has been reached. To set an audible
wellhead pressure alarm, complete the following steps:
1)
Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to Alarm Control, then
press Enter.
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons to navigate the selection arrow to the
Channel A Setting option, then press Enter.
3)
Using the Up and Down buttons, set the desired wellhead pressure you
wish to set an alarm for.
4)
Once you have selected your desired wellhead pressure press Enter to set
the alarm or press Menu to return to the Alarm Control Menu

Channel B Setting
This option allows you to set a specified casing pressure alarm, which will provide an
audible sound once a specific wellhead pressure has been reached. To set an audible
wellhead pressure alarm, complete the following steps:
1)
Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to Alarm Control, then
press Enter.
2)
Using the Up and Down buttons to navigate the selection arrow to the
Channel B Setting option, then press Enter.
3)
Using the Up and Down buttons, set the desired casing pressure you
wish to set an alarm for.
4)
Once you have selected your desired casing pressure press Enter to set the
alarm or press Menu to return to the Alarm Control Menu

System Voltage
This option allows you to set a specified system voltage alarm, which will provide an
audible sound once a specific system voltage has been reached. To set an audible system
voltage alarm, complete the following steps:

Press Menu and navigate the selection arrow to Alarm Control, then
press Enter.
6)
Using the Up and Down buttons to navigate the selection arrow to the
SysVolt Setting option, then press Enter.
7)
Using the Up and Down buttons, set the desired system voltage at which
you would like to trigger the alarm.
8)
Once you have selected your desired system voltage press Enter to set the
alarm or press Menu to return to the Alarm Control Menu.

System Info
This option allows you to view the system information for the LMS box. To access this
option complete the following steps:

Configuring the Line Management System (LMS) via PC


The LMS unit can work either independent of or in conjunction with a PC. When in
conjunction with a PC all data can be recorded and displayed in real time on the PC
monitor. To connect the PC to the LMS unit, install an RS-232 cable between the LMS and
the PC, and start the (SparWorks.exe) executable, which is normally located in the
\Program Files\Spartek Systems\SparWorks\ path. The PC will display the entry
window below Open Existing Project Database.

The user can now select an existing project database or by selecting Cancel the user can
create a new database.
The program will enter the SparWorks main window after the database has been selected.
Once a database is selected/created its name is displayed in the status bar, and all the data
and Log Pass files will be stored in this project database.

Setting up the Project


The Project database was selected or created when entering the SparWorks program. From
the main SparWorks pane select the Depth Encoder button under Other Utilities. This
selection will open the following pane Memory Depth Encoder and well as the
Encoder Depth. The Memory Depth Encoder pane allows the user to set up the various
functions as previously discussed during the manual setup of the LMS unit. To setup the
various functions via the PC select the appropriate Tab.
In the Memory Depth Encoder pane, select Setup to choose the Encoder Interface, Units
and any other functions that can be setup at this time. Then choose File then Open
Project Manager. This will show the database, which was originally selected. Highlight
the database name and select ADD to begin setting up the Project information.

Type in the name of the project; in this case Bobs project. Other entries are not required
and can be typed in at any time. Select Save when satisfied with the inputs. This will
return you to the Project Manager. Highlight the Project Name.

Input the Log Run Name (Log Run Name 1) and any other parameters. Select Save
which will return the user to the Project Manager.

Once the Log Run has been added choose the Select button. The user will be returned
to the Memory Depth Encoder screen. The system will create the log pass after data has
been recorded and merged. Log passes can be reviewed upon return to the Project
Manager window above.

Setting up the Depth Encoder


Select Encoder Tab from the main Memory Depth Encoder pane, then Encoder
Setup. The Encoder Depth window displays the real time depth and speed data from the
encoder. The Memory Depth Encoder window is the main window for setting and
controlling the LMS unit operations.

Prior to setting up the Encoder, setup the Units if they are not as required. For example,
if depth and speed are required in Metric units select, but are shown in English units select
Setup->Unit Selection to expose the following window, and change the units to the
requirement for the survey.

Creating an Acquisition Control Table (ACT)


An Acquisition Control Table should be setup to establish the type of sensors from which
data will be acquired, setup sensor calibration, and data processing. To setup the ACT
select File->Open Acquisition Control Table (ACT) Manager
From the ACT Manager window select the ACT that matches the sensors to be used during
the survey. If an ACT does not exist one will have to be created. To create an ACT, select
ADD.

Click ADD to enter ACT Control Table MPLT Configuration window.

Input a suitable name for the ACT in the space next to the Name label. The name should
help the user identify what is in the ACT, or may indicate a particular client. In the above
example the assigned name Calibration. Click Add again in the above window to
display the Add ACT Item window.

Select the Surface Sensor tab and the pull down next to the Surface Sensor label to
choose a Tension Device. Fill in the Sensor Details, the select Add under the Surface
Sensor Detail to create another Surface Sensor, and set up the input Channel #. Repeat as
necessary to setup the external transducers. Fill out all required information, for
calibration, Unit Type must be Current, and Calibration Unit must be mA.

Click Save to confirm all choices, PC will return Add ACT Item window.

In Channel # tab, select the respective physical analog channel number. Click Save, the
Software will return to the ACT Control Table MPLT Configuration window. Add
another 2 ACT Items for another 2 physical analog channels; the ACT Control Table
MPLT Configuration should look like the one shown below.
Click the Save button once all sensors have been added, and return to the ACT Manager
window. There is now a new ACT named Calibration which you have just created. The
next step is to calibrate the Analog Channels.

Analog Channel Calibration


For this step, begin by selecting the Calibration ACT. Next connect the current generator
and milliampere meter to the desired analog Channel input as shown below.

After setting up the current generator, select Enable Real Time Acquisition mode. Then
select Analog Channels from the Memory Depth Encoder main window. The PC will
pop up the Memory Depth Encoder - Analog Channel Calibration window.

Click Get Current Settings to read the current Multiplier and Additive default values
from box.
Choose the analog channel to be calibrated, and click the appropriate channel Calibrate
button, the program will enter the channels Calibration window.

Adjust the Current Generator to make the current output about 4mA, and input the current
read from Current Meter into first Reference Values (Y) mA tab, click Sample>>
button, SW will enter Sample Sensor windows and click OK, PC will sample the raw
data from box showing as following. Click OK after sampling is finished. The raw data
will be filLCD in first Raw Value (X), a/d (mA) tab.

Adjust the Current Generator to make the current output about 20mA, and follow the same
procedure as 4 mA calibration, PC will acquire the 20 mA raw data. Click Calibrate
menu, SW will calculate this channels Multiplier and Additive values, and Save
them.

Repeat the above procedure for the other two analog input channels. All three channels
calibration Multiplier and Additive constants are now temporarily held in the box. To
permanently save this information in the LMSs memory click Set Calibration Values
button from Memory Depth Encoder- Analog Channel Calibration

Analog Channel Configuration test


Before proceeding 3 analog channels configuration, another ACT must be created, follow
5.8.1 Create ACT item. The differences are that the unit for each channel is engineering
unit but mA. Secondly, each channel is assigned an individual physical 4~20mA
transducer, for example pressure, temperature, tension and flow etc.
After creating and selecting a Configuration ACT, connect the 4~20mA transducer and
milliampere meter with box analog channel 1 as following for configuration, current meter
is an option.

Enable real time acquisition, then enter Setup>Calibration from Memory Depth Encoder
main window, PC will enter Calibration Status windows as following. There are 3 items
representing 3 different 4~20mA transducers.

Select one transducer (e.g. channel 1 for pressure transducer) for configuration, and then
click Calibrate. SW will enter Calibration window, which is same as the analog
calibration window, except Reference Values unit is psi and Raw Values unit is
mA.
Add a certain low pressure (for example 1% full scale) and full scale pressure values on the
transducer, follow the same procedure as described in the analog calibration procedure to
acquire different current values on different pressures. Click Calibrate sub menu, SW will

then calculate the Multiplier and Additive as shown below, and Save them.

Follow the same procedure as channel 1 configuration to configure channel 2 and 3. All
three channels configuration Multiplier and Additive constants will be acquired. Click
the Initialize Encoder button from Memory Depth Encoder main window to save all
three channels configuration M&A into the box. Click Analog Channels item from
Memory Depth Encoder main window, then click Get Current Settings button, SW will
display all three channels configuration information as shown below, When finished,
confirm all the settings are the same as expected.

GPS Data test


Select GPS menu from Memory Depth Encoder window, and click Get GPS Location
Data button to get GPS information from box. Check if the latitude, longitude, altitude and
GPS status matches the values displayed on LCD.

Alarm Settings test


Select Alarm Settings menu from the Memory Depth Encoder window and PC will
show the alarm settings information as following,

Modify some alarm settings and click Set Alarm Parameters to write the settings into
box, and read settings back by click Get Alarm Parameters to confirm if the settings
modification is changed correctly.
The > character means that the relative alarm will be triggered if the engineering value is
greater than the alarm setting, on the contrary, < will trigger the alarm if engineering
value is less than the alarm setting. Modify settings to trigger alarm, check if the buzzer in
the box is activated and that the LCD is displaying the active alarm information.

Analog Channels Calibration test


The LMS unit can monitor process and record up to three external standard 4-20mA analog
channels. Each 4-20mA device will need to be calibrated to convert the 4-20mA current
into engineering units. Follow the three steps listed below to calibrate each sensor. Follow
3 steps following to test this calibration.

To setup the encoder input the serial number and a description of the encoder. Choose
Encoder as the Source. In the Encoder Parameters section, input the known
information for the inputs shown. The Encoder Resolution is normally displayed on the
encoders case, and the Diameter or Circumference of the measure wheel for the
logging unit can be measured directly if not known. Input a check mark in the box next to
Wrap if the depth measure wheel operates as a wrapped system. (Note: a close
approximation of this information is acceptable, if an Encoder Calibration is
conducted.) The calibration of the Depth Encoder is covered later.

Calibrating the Encoder


1.
To Calibrate the encoder type the 0 depth value (this value is
usually the tool zero before going into the well, i.e., the mechanical
odometer depth value at tool zero, which is not necessarily a numeral 0
zero). The tool zero value is normally the input for Set Depth 0 space.
After inputting the tool zero value, select Set Depth 0, followed by Yes.
2.
When ready, spool wireline into the well to a desired depth based on
the mechanical odometer, e.g., 50 feet. (Note: If encoders depth display
moves in the opposite direction of the mechanical odometer, check/uncheck
Up in the Encoder Parameters.)
3.
Type 50 in the space next to Set Depth 1, and then select
Calibrate.
4.
Select Save then OK to close the encoder setup screen and revert
to the Memory Depth Encoder window.

In the Memory Depth Encoder window, click Set Depth item, PC will enter Initialize

Change the depth to match the depth reference if necessary (mechanical odometer).
Choose Set Depth when complete and the PC and the LMS unit will be initialized to
display the new depth.

Setting the LMS Operating Mode


The LMS unit can be operated in the following modes:
1) Surface sensor throughput to PC Only LMS unit will send depth data as well as
tension and wellhead pressures to the PC at the programmed sample rate.
2) Memory Mode Once the LMS has been programmed (PC or Key Pad), the LMS
will record depth and surface channels to its internal memory. When the PC is in
Memory Mode, functions such as programming the LMS, and downloading data from
the LMS are available.
3) SRO / Memory Mode - If the LMS is in Real Time, Acquisition Enabled modes, the
user can send a Start Record command to have the system begin recording to
memory, while the displaying the depth and speed on the PC.
3) Alternatively, the PC can also be used to record depth, speed and other data from
sensors, etc., in the Surface Readout (SRO) mode simultaneous to recording data
from the same equipment to the LMS units flash memory. Once the survey is
complete, the data recorded to the PC and/or the data downloaded from the LMS
can be used to create log passes. Both types of data are recorded as Spartek Data
Records (SDR) files. (Note: To record data in the SRO mode the Begin SRO
Record and Acquisition Enabled have to be selected.) If Acquisition Enabled is
not selected the following warning pane pops up!

Initializing and Programming the LMS


After setting depth and encoder parameters, click Initialize Encoder this will initialize the
LMS real time clock, depth and any of the sensors parameters connected to the LMS unit.
(Note: The Initialize Encoder selection initializes the LMS unit and loads it with the
current depth encoder and sensor parameters, but the LMS Flash Memory will not
be erased. To initialize the LMS with the same parameters and erase its internal
Flash Memory, the Operating Mode has to be set to Memory and the Program
Encoder button has to be selected.).
The following dialog and panes are observed when Programming the LMS unit, and erasing
its Flash Memory.

Checking the Depth and Encoder Operation


To check the depth setup and encoder operation of the LMS unit, and simultaneously
display information to the PC: In the Memory Depth Encoder Panes Operating Mode
choose the Real Time mode and Acquisition Enabled. Connect an encoder (if present,
encoder box with motor drive), and turn the encoder shaft. The depth and speed values on
the PC and the LMS units Display should be in synchronization.

Click Select to enter Project Manager window, and select the Log Run ID that you
chose just now, and choose the PC real time record file, whose file name is ENCxxxxxxxxxxx-xx.sdr. PC will return Merge Data window, click View Data button, SW will enter
the Merge Data View window, confirm if the depth and speed graphics match the
engineering data.

Memory Mode test


Click Encoder menu from Memory Depth Encoder window, select Memory mode to
activate Program Encoder, Download To PC and Download To MMC items. Click
Program Encoder button to erase flash memory in box and set encoder parameters to the
box. Then apply Start Memory Record and Stop Memory Record items to start and
stop recording data into flash memory. As the data is being recorded into flash, the **
will flash on the right corner of LCD. Turn on encoder simulator and allow it to run for a
few minutes.

Now we are ready to download the data from flash memory. Before downloading data from
box, you must create one suitable LogRunID from Project Information item. The data
downloaded from box will be stored in this LogRunID.
Click Download To PC button, SW will pop up the Download Tool Data window to
indicate how many bytes of data will be uploaded from the box. After data has been
downloaded successfully, the PC will pop up the confirmation message.

After downloading data from box successfully, return to SparWorks window to select
Merge Depth-Time Data item, select the Log Run ID that you chose just now, and choose
the memory file, whose file name is MENCxxxxxxxx-xxx-xx.sdr. PC will plot the depth
and speed data, and check if the depth and speed graphics match the engineering data.

Hook up 4~20mA transducers to relative analog channels, enable real time acquisition from
Memory Depth Encoder main window, then select Curve View item, SW will display
real time data as following, including depth, elapse time, speed and 3 analog channels
engineering data. Check if the relative analog channels data matches engineering value
added on transducer.

Memory Data test


Open depth and speed graphics from Merge Depth-Time Data in SparWorks window,
PC will plot the depth and speed graphics as Merge Data View window, select the start
point and stop point by right click mouse, and click Auto and Merge button
respectively. SW will generate one file name DNxxxxxx in Log Pass tab to hold all
data including depth, speed and analog channels data. PC will pop out File merge
completed successfully message to confirm all data is merged successfully.

Return SparWorks window, select Log Editor, PC will enter Log Editor window,
enter File>Open Project Manager, SW will pop out Project Manager window as
