LED
LED is a Light Emitted Diode which
emits light during forward biasing
LED is an Active display device
Cost is high
More life time

14. What is TRIAC?
TRIAC is a three terminal semiconductor switching device which can conduct in either
forward or reverse direction. The TRIAC is the combination of two SCRs connected in
parallel but in opposite direction.
15. What is the application of TRIAC?
Heater control
Phase control
Light dimming control
Static switch to turn A.C power ON and OFF
16. Compare SCR and TRIAC.
S.No
1.
2.
3.
4.
SCR
Unidirectional device
The reliability is more
Available in large ratings
Only one mode of operation is
possible
TRIAC
Bidirectional Device
The reliability is less
Not available in large ratings
The operation in four different mode is
possible

Where
RBB=RB1+RB2
RB1=Internal dynamic resistance
RB2=Inter base resistance
21. What is peak point voltage?
When VEE exceeds the value VBB+VD the diode is forward bias and starts to conduct.
The value of emitter voltage which makes diode to conduct is called peak point voltage.
Vp = VBB + VD
22. What are the different regions in characteristic of UJT?
The different regions in characteristics of UJT are
Cut off region
Negative resistance region
Saturation region
23. What are the applications of UJT?
Non sinusoidal oscillator
Timing circuits
Sawtooth generators
Triggering device for SCR and TRIAC

27. List out the constructions of power MOSFET
Lateral +Double diffusion construction (LDMOSFET)
Vertical MOSFET (term V because of construction)
TMOSFET (term T because of channel shape)
28. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Lateral &Double diffusion methods?
Advantages
Low gate signal power requirement
Fast switching speeds
Disadvantages
Power MOSFET
Faster, No storage time and no
influence of temperature
Very high
Depends on V DS
Extremely high stability

33. What is meant by active display devices?
These are the display units which modulate the incident radiation and then give the display
information.
Example: Light Crystal Display (LCD)
34. What are the 3 attributes to operate a photovoltaic (PV) cell?
The absorption of light, generating either electron-hole pairs of excitons
The separation of charge carriers of opposite types
The separate extraction of those carriers to an external circuit
35. What is meant by opto coupler or opto Isolator?
Opto coupler or Opto Isolator is used to provide complete electric isolation between circuits. The
purpose of isolation is to provide protection from high voltage transients, voltages that could
possibly damage the device.
Opto coupler or Opto Isolator consists of two main components an optical transmitter(LED or
infrared LED) and an optical receiver(photo transistor).
35.What is meant by Isolation voltage?
It is defined as the maximum voltage that can exist between the input and output
terminals without dielectric breakdown occurring.
36. What is meant by transfer gain?
The transfer gain is the ratio of output voltage to input current
37. What is DC current Transfer Ratio?
It is the ration of output current to the input current through the LED. It is usually expressed in
percentage
38. What is meant by Charge Coupled Device (CCD?)
CCD is an integrated circuit etched onto a silicon surface forming light sensitive elements called
pixels.
39. Write the expression for (Intrinsic standoff ratio) for UJT (AU-May/June 2012)
= RB1/(RB1+RB2).
www.rejinpaul.com
40. What are the materials used in LED? (AU-May/June 2012)
Gallium Arsenide(GaAs)
Gallium Phosphide(GaP)
Gallium Arsenide Phosphide(GaAsP)
