Year One Suggested Reading

This list is intended to give a general background to support the studio element of
the course. It is not expected that you will read every book over the course of the
year, but you are encouraged to read as widely as possible to inform your project
work, and to gain a greater understanding of contemporary architecture and the
design process. Individual lecture courses will provide more specific reading lists.

Precedents

Students frequently ask about which architectural magazines/journals they should

read or subscribe to. There are loads in the architecture library; try these out and
see which ones you like if you really fall in love with one, subscribe by all means.
The Architects Journal (AJ) (weekly covering many aspects of design, practice,
legal, jobs, services, etc.)
The Architectural Review (AR) (monthly, usually themed issues such as particular
building types or cities a favorite with students, can build up into a useful source of
reference. Usually there are student rates for subscriptions, and discount offers if
you get the AJ as well).
