To Whom It May Concern:

As you all know, I have been charged with some very serious crimes. I have pled "not guilty" and I
have every intention of fighting these charges until I am exonerated.
Unfortunately, in order to vigorously defend myself, I must do so in a legal system that runs on its
own schedule. It has become obvious to me that this case will drag on for many months. Due to the
length of time it will take to prepare, and for the court process to run its normal course, it is quite likely
these matters will not be concluded before the start of the next legislative session in January.
A trial during the legislative session is a problem for two reasons. First, the business of the Senate
will be interrupted by the media frenzy that will surround this case. That is not fair to my legislative
colleagues or to the State of Vermont. Secondly, and more importantly, a trial taking my full
concentration would not be fair to the voters who elected me. They deserve a senator who can devote
full concentration on representing their interests in the legislature. This will be difficult for me to do.
I have therefore reluctantly come to the conclusion that I should resign my Senate seat and hereby
tender this letter of resignation. I believe it is best to do so now in order to give the Franklin County
Republican Committee adequate time to find a successor, and for that person to become familiar with
the Senate's rules and operating procedures.
It has been an honor and a privilege to have served as your State Senator. I greatly appreciate the
trust you have placed in me. I hope to regain that trust when these legal proceedings are concluded and
I have been fully exonerated.
