Understanding the Basics of Ashe (Ase- Axe-Ache) and Nature,

Let me start with the fact I will use the Cuban Lucumi spelling of ashe
throughout this lecture, but the concept is the same for the Yoruba spelling of ase,
the Brazilian or Portuguese spelling of axe, or the alternate Spanish and English
spellings of ache.
Permtanme empezar con el hecho voy a utilizar la ortografa Lucum cubana de

Ashe is one of the most important concepts in all forms of African, The Diaspora
and in fact all indigenous cultures and religions. Any earth based culture or belief
rooted in nature or natural things shares the concept of ashe or a similar concept.
Interestingly, the concept of ashe is missing from standard forms of the religions
linked to Abraham (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). This puzzles me and most
serious students of culture and religion, for example The Ten Commandments have
no mentions of nature or natural things (ashe). All life begins with ashe and all
living things have ashe. Living things are more complex than non living, dead, or
inanimate natural items, therefore it may be helpful to discuss non living natural
things first. Understand that the concept of ashe is the same in both living and non
living natural things, yet living things with a soul are more complex, than those
without a soul. Basically we can divide all natural things in two parts, non living
(like a rock or river), living such as plants and animals. Many naturalists and
spiritualists would contest the opinion that only animals or humans have a soul.

Ashe is the energy that exists in all natural things; it is recognizable, acquirable,
and even transferable by believers. Lucumi teaches that Olodumare (God, the
creator) left two parts of himself (we could call avatars) named Olorun and Olofin to
manage this universe, while he, Olodumare is away building other universes, or on
other time lines, or in other dimensions beyond the universe as we know it. Olorun
is the owner of the sky and heavens. He is also called the womb of the rainbow,
because like the rainbow he never touches the earth. Olorun is the senior of the
two. Olofin is of both sky and earth and he visits earth freely and regularly,
therefore humans have the possibility to meet Olofin on the earth, while Olorun
humans do not meet until their soul (called ori in Lucumi) leaves the dead body and
Iku (death) and Esu or Eshu (the Orisha of perfect balance and more) lead ori to
Olorun where the ori is judged and reassigned by Oloruns command. Olodumare,
created the Orishas to assist both Olorun and Olofin, the Orishas are the immortal
servants of Olodumare, and his two avatars, Olorun and Olofin. Most of the
immortal Orishas of Lucumi are associated with specific elements of nature,
animals, plants, and characteristics of man. Man was created in the image of the
immortal Orishas; not in the image of Olodumare, Olorun or Olofin.
Ashe es la energa que existe en todas las cosas naturales; es reconocible,
adquiribles, e incluso transferibles por los creyentes. Lucum ensea que Olodumare
(Dios, el creador) dej dos partes de s mismo (que podramos llamar avatares)
llamado Olorun y Olofin para administrar este universo, mientras que l, Olodumare
est construyendo otros universos de distancia, o en otras lneas de tiempo, o en
otras dimensiones , ms all del universo tal como lo conocemos. Olorun es el

Olofin brought ashe to earth and the immortal Orishas elsewhere as a gift. This
energy is how life and living things began, it is somewhat like a breath of life and
the ability of to pollinate, propagate, populate, the capacity to learn or grow in
every aspect of what we call life. Yes, very important gift for all living things is
ashe! First lets discuss the non living natural things, these basically break into two
parts , the first is stationary such as a rock or boulder, of course these stationary
items can move, by for example an earthquake, but generally they are stationary.
In order for humans to have a chance to obtain some of their ashe we must
physically contact it, we might say obtaining this ashe requires a quest or a visit.
The second part of non living parts of nature is those that move, such as oceans,
rivers, air, clouds, etc. These obviously can be more elusive or less depending on
how we look at them.
