Led a recitation on material from Dr. Mike Wesch’s Introduction to Cultural Anthropology class;
assisted students in the production of a documentary on the college experience.

Linguistic Field Methods – Xhosa Spring 2010


International Studies senior thesis
Linguistic Field Methods class with Dr. Tiffany Kershner at KSU. Currently working with a
consultant from Johannesburg, South Africa and conducting research on her dialect of Xhosa.
Exploring the bounds of linguistic relativity through a study of noun classes in Xhosa.
Ethnography of Anonymity Online Spring 2009
Dr. Mike Wesch’s Digital Ethnography course
Conducted research analyzing the use of internet dialects and creation of memes on anonymous
forums online. Participated in a live web conference during class and produced a video of my
research using Sony Vegas editing software.

Breadmaking Traditions and Tourism in Malta Summer 2008


Expeditions Summer Field School, Gozo, Malta
Took notes, conducted interviews and engaged in participant observation regarding the
preservation of indigenous breadmaking traditions by local cultural tourism organizations.

Linguistic Field Methods – Afan Oromo Spring 2008


KSU Linguistic Field Methods course
Worked with a consultant from Ethiopia and wrote a dictionary and grammar for his dialect of the
Afan Oromo language. Gained experience describing word structure and sound systems, as well as
recognizing tone and complex consonants in a language. Also wrote a research paper about how
linguistic differences may affect a culture’s view of time.

Awarded to the top junior in linguistic anthropology at KSU.

Martin and Harriet Ottenheimer Central States Scholarship Fall 2009


Awarded to a student presenting at the April 2009 Central States Anthropological Society
conference.

Mark Chapman Scholars Program Fall 2008


Was awarded $5000 to aid fieldwork in Malta and the incorporation of that fieldwork into an
independent study and research paper during the next academic year.

Secretary
Carried out secretarial and recruiting duties for the club, and accompanied them to perform in
Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan in the summer of 2007. Currently assisting the club in planning a trip to
perform in San Francisco in April of 2010. Other duties included distribution of meeting minutes
and some website maintenance.
