Dear Parishioners,
The first reading from Isaiah is referred to in
Scripture as The Thine Suffering Servant Song.
It tells of Jesus who does not run away from
suffering. He is the example of the perfect
disciple who will not allow verbal insults or
physical abuse to turn them aside from their
path of faith.
How timely is the reading from St James? While
we are still in the middle of the refugee crisis
these words are challenging. If one of the
brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes (shelter) and has not enough food to
live on and we say I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty without
giving them these bare necessities of life, then what good is that; if good works do not
go with it, it is quite dead.
Our faith must lead to action to help those in need. This is true both on an individual
level or a country. On our own we feel helpless; but working together we can do
wonders. Is there any way that we would consider as a parish to look after a refugee
family or individual? this is the reality. We can easily tell others, as the local authority,
as the government to do something. Is there anything we can do together to help???
Who do people say I am? Jesus asked his disciples. But the real question is: Who do
you say I am? do we recognise Jesus
in the stranger, the orphan, the
refugee? Our religion in getting very
serious now? Lets talk and think and
consider possibilities!! I know it is an
outrageous idea. I know I could be
sign out of the parish of it! I am not
ready to go just yet! I could have
space at n.10!! What do you think??
We need to put our actions where our
words are!!!
