Cross country Oil/Gas pipelines are managed and maintained as long-lived assets. A lifetime Asset
Information Management System is required to manage Cross country Oil/Gas pipelines. The proposed
Pipeline Asset Information Management System (P-AIMS) is an indigenous idea for this purpose.
P-AIMS is specifically developed for individual Pipeline. It is GIS centric. It is not a generic, canned or ofthe-shelf customizable software P-AIMS is developed by controlling GOOGLE EARTH through
programming to mount pipeline asset information on GOOGLE EARTH. This is of course a tedious
process. However it is reasonably justified since it is a one-time effort and pipeline information are
maintained for decades.
Using full power of Google Earth Engine, P-AIMS presents, maintains and preserves pipeline data in
a secured waysecured-- because all the project information loaded in Google Earth is actually residing
on users hard disk and it is not transparent to GOOLE EARTH universal users.
In GIS programming environment, modules are referred to as layers. Following layers are conceived as
common requirements:

1.0-Project Footprint
2.0-BaseMap
3.0-BaseMap (Labeled)
4.0-Alignment Sheets
5.0-Road_Crossings
6.0-River_Creek_Lake Crossings
7.0-Pipeline Crossing
8.0-Flying over ROW
9.0-Explosions
10.0-Pilferages
11.0-Document Management
There is no restriction on adding new layers according to Pipeline operators requirements.

Cross Country Pipelines are spread over earth. Identifying a pipeline is best be done geographically. The
best way to define pipelines is through their GPS coordinates.

Any entity/event on the pipeline (Pipeline alignment, river, road and pipeline crossings, main/intermediate
stations, pilferage, explosion, repair, fire, flood etc.), on pipeline has certain GPS coordinates. Google Earth
Engine (GIS) is one of ideal choices for representing all these information visually and numerically. PAIMS provides a base for further enhancements and advancement with regard to safety, real-time
surveillance of R.O.W.

A state of art, flight over R.O.W. module is also available. You can fly over R.O.W while sitting in your
office. Presently this is not a real time flightmeaning that it is based on the Google Earth image. However
this may be a real time flight, depending upon level of investment a pipeline operator can plan to achieve
real time, near real time or real time on demand imaging facility from Google Earth or some other similar
service provider. This however keeps the already developed layer for flight intact as it is. It is just a matter
of service enhancement by the GIS service provider.

Item 8) and 9) above are for record keeping of the pilferage (theft and vandalism) and explosion (an act of
terrorism) events on the pipeline. As of now these layers/modules are not meant for countering the two
events in real time. Apart from maintaining record of the events these modules can give opportunity (once
the event has occurred) to locate and view the site where disaster has took place while sitting in the office.
Subject to availability of real time imagery and pipeline monitoring the disaster management and control
can also be handled smoothly by the decision makers sitting in their offices.

The Document Management layer/Module (under development) will provide access to pipeline project
documents (Drawings, P&IDs, General arrangements, specifications, Alignment sheets, etc. in PDF
format) from the same console i.e. Google Earth.

The beauty of this indigenous effort is that pipeline asset information data is totally safe, secured and
separated from the user community of the GIS Engine, in this case Google Earth.
