THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN
Dear Parishioners,
Jeremiah 31: 7-9: Jeremiah, like Isaiah, was a prophet of the exiled
people of Israel. It was at the lowest point in their history, yet Jeremiah
spoke of a promise God would fulfil. The remnant of Israel they will be
gathered from the ends of the earth. God will save his people
In the letter to the Hebrews, God saves his people through the High
Priest, Jesus himself.
In the Gospel, we hear of Bartimaeus, the blind beggar whose sight
Jesus restores. But notice Jesus respects the blind man and asks him:
What do you want me to do for you? It was rather obvious, yet Jesus did
not presume what was best for the blind man Master let me see again!
God saves his people in bringing His light into our world. That light can
enlighten our minds when we allow it to.
There is a clear message in todays readings concerning blindness;
silencing other; not listening; deciding for others. We need to be aware that
blindness can take many different forms.
So often we know what is best for people! We offer them our answers
and our solutions. We presume what is best or good for others
While we want to be helpful to others, we need to LISTEN to their story
How much do we listen. How do Religious or Political leaders listen to the
voices of people, or is it to a select few or to those who shout the loudest or
have the finances to make their voices heard!!
For example: How are we as a nation responding to the refugee crisis?
As Popo Francis said are we listening to the cry of the poor? What will be the
Pastoral guidance coming from the Synod in Rome on marriage and family
life?
Now China is our best friend! We are trying to ignore our neighbours in
Europe! What about the Dalai Lama? His visit to the UK caused coolness in
UK and China relations in the past. There is something not quite right here!
I hope I am wrong, but I see trouble ahead as a result of this weeks
China/UK contracts. It cuts across the plans which is hoped will emerge from
the Paris Climate Change Conference. Where does the Nuclear Power
station leave renewable energy? There is the matter of safety and nuclear
waste disposal! Why are subsidies being withdrawn from renewable energy,
such as solar panels etc. There are so many contradicting voices, even with
the Wisdom of Solomon, we would struggle!
Notice in the gospel, the crowd tried to silence Bartimaeus, but then
changed their minds. Crowds can be very fickle. It is the voice of Jesus we
need to listen to and follow him.
Thats all for this week, God bless. Fr Joe
