Evaluacin de clula fotoelectroqumica biohbrida empleando el
centro de reaccin de la bacteria prpura como biosensor para
herbicidas
Publicada en ScienceDirect - Publicaciones Cientficas sobre Nano-Agricultura, 15/08/2014

2014. Biosensors and Bioelectronics. The Rhodobacter sphaeroides reaction centre

is a relatively robust and tractable membrane protein that has potential for
exploitation in technological applications, including biohybrid devices for
photovoltaics and biosensing. This report assessed the usefulness of the
photocurrent generated by this reaction centre adhered to a small working electrode
as the basis for a biosensor for classes of herbicides used extensively for the control
of weeds in major agricultural crops. Photocurrent generation was inhibited in a
concentration-dependent manner by the triazides atrazine and terbutryn, but not by
nitrile or phenylurea herbicides. Measurements of the effects of these herbicides on
the kinetics of charge recombination in photo-oxidised reaction centres in solution
showed the same selectivity of response. Titrations of reaction centre photocurrents
yielded half maximal inhibitory concentrations of 208nM and 2.1M for terbutryn and
atrazine, respectively, with limits of detection estimated at around 8nM and 50nM,
respectively.

Grafeno en el medio acutico: adsorcin, dispersin, toxicidad y
transformacin
Publicada en ACS Publications - Publicaciones Cientficas sobre Nano-Agricultura,
14/08/2014

2014. Environ. Sci. Techno. Graphene-family nanomaterials (GFNs) including

pristine graphene, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and graphene oxide (GO) offer
great application potential, leading to the possibility of their release into aquatic
environments. Upon exposure, graphene/rGO and GO exhibit different adsorption
properties toward environmental adsorbates, thus the molecular interactions at the
GFNwater interface are discussed. After solute adsorption, the
dispersion/aggregation behaviors of GFNs can be altered by solution chemistry, as
well as by the presence of colloidal particles and biocolloids. GO has different
dispersion performance from pristine graphene and rGO, which is further
demonstrated from surface properties. Upon exposure in aquatic environments,
GFNs have adverse impacts on aquatic organisms (e.g., bacteria, algae, plants,
invertebrates, and fish).

2014. Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy.

Hibiscus Sabdariffa (Gongura) plant extracts (leaves (HL) and stem (HS)) were used
for the first time in the green synthesis of bio-functionalized silver nanoparticles
(AgNPs). The bio-functionality of AgNPs has been successfully utilized for selective
colorimetric sensing of potentially health and environmentally hazardous Hg2+, Cd2+
and Pb2+ metal ions at ppm level in aqueous solution. Importantly, clearly
distinguishable colour for all three metal ions was observed. The influence of extract
preparation condition and pH were also explored on the formation of AgNPs. Both
selectivity and sensitivity differed for AgNPs synthesized from different parts of the
plant. Direct correlation between the stability of green synthesized AgNPs at different
pH and its antibacterial effects has been established.

Remocin esttica y dinmica de materia orgnica acutica mediante
nanotubos de carbono
Publicada en ScienceDirect - Publicaciones Cientficas sobre Nanotecnologas en Aguas,
01/08/2014

2014. Water Research. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated for their
capability and mechanisms to simultaneously remove colloidal natural organic matter
(NOM) and humic substances from natural surface water. Static removal testing was
conducted via adsorption experiments while dynamic removal was evaluated by
layering CNTs onto substrate membranes and filtering natural water through the
CNT-layered membranes. Analyses of treated water samples showed that removal of
humic substances occurred via adsorption under both static and dynamic conditions.
Removal of colloidal NOM occurred at a moderate level of 3666% in static
conditions, independent of the specific surface area (SSA) of CNTs. Dynamic
removal of colloidal NOM increased from approximately 15% with the unmodified
membrane to 80100% with the CNT-modified membranes.

2014. Desalination. Multi walled carbon nanotube/cellulose acetate (CNT/CA)

nanocomposite membranes were successfully prepared by phase inversion using
acetone as solvent and 20 wt.% deionized water as non-solvent. CNTs were first
functionalized by oxidation purification in a strong acidic medium to enhance their
dispersion within the polymer matrix. Small amounts of the functionalized CNTs,
namely 0.0005, 0.005, and 0.01 wt.% were used to prepare the membranes. The
CNTs were randomly oriented and uniformly dispersed within the membranes.
Membranes' morphologies were characterized by field emission scanning electron
microscopy (FESEM) and nitrogen adsorption.

Publicada en ScienceDirect - Publicaciones Cientficas sobre Nano-Energa, 15/08/2014

2014. Journal of Power Sources. Rice-like brookite TiO2 particles with high phase
purity and 600 nm particle diameter were synthesized through a hydrothermal
method, and then bilayer TiO2 film-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were
fabricated by using photoanode consisting of nanosized anatase TiO2 film as
underlayer and the above brookite TiO2 submicrometer particle film as overlayer.
The effects of the brookite overlayer on the light scattering and photoelectrochemical
performances of the anatase TiO2 film-based DSSCs were investigated by using
UVvis diffused reflectance absorption spectra (DRS), open-circuit voltage decay
(OCVD) curves and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) measurements.

2014. ACS Nano. We have successfully demonstrated a great advantage of

plasmonic Au nanoparticles for efficient enhancement of Cu(In,Ga)Se2(CIGS)
flexible photovoltaic devices. The incorporation of Au NPs can eliminate obstacles in
the way of developing ink-printing CIGS flexible thin film photovoltaics (TFPV), such
as poor absorption at wavelengths in the high intensity region of solar spectrum, and
that occurs significantly at large incident angle of solar irradiation. The enhancement
of external quantum efficiency and photocurrent have been systematically analyzed
via the calculated electromagnetic field distribution.

La carga de voltaje mejora la conductividad inica en membranas de

2014. ACS Nano. Ionically conductive membranes are used in many

electrochemical processes and devices, including batteries, fuel cells, and
electrolyzers. In all such applications, it is advantageous to use membranes with high
ionic conductivity because membrane resistance causes a voltage loss suffered by
the cell. We describe here a method for enhancing ionic conductivity in membranes
containing small diameter (4 nm) gold nanotubes. This entails making the gold
nanotube membrane the working electrode in an electrochemical cell and applying a
voltage to the membrane.

Absorcin de luz infrarroja cercana en nanoemulsin magntica bajo

Publicada en ScienceDirect - Publicaciones Cientficas sobre Nano-Energa, 15/07/2014

2014. Optics Communications. We study the magnetic field dependent near infrared
photon absorption behavior in a magnetically polarizable oil-in-water emulsion of
droplet radius ~110nm. The absorption of near infrared photons in magnetic
nanoemulsion is found to be dependent on the volume fraction and applied magnetic
field, which is attributed to the variation in the Mie absorption efficiency during the
structural transitions of nanoemulsion droplets in dispersion. Also, the absorption
linearly increases with incident near infrared photon energy up to certain external
magnetic field. The imaginary part of the refractive index ( k 1 ) of magnetic
nanoemulsion obtained from the near infrared absorption profile in the Rayleigh
regime is found to vary with external magnetic field and the sample volume fraction (
) . The measured k 1 follows a power law increment with sample volume fraction ( k 1
~ p , where p is the exponent). The exponent (p) decreases with external magnetic
field implying that the structural transition of nanoemulsion droplets increases k 1.

Publicada en IOPscience - Publicaciones Cientficas sobre Nano_Energa, 14/07/2014

2014. Nanotechnology. We present a coarse-grained, continuum kinetic theory for charging supercapacitors with narrow
cylindrical nanopores. The theory reveals that the occupancy of a nonpolarized pore and the energy barrier for ionion
interdiffusion are the key issues controlling the different regimes of dynamic response. For 'ionophobic' pores, where the
pore is empty at no applied voltage, charge density advances into the pore via diffusion-like dynamics. The mechanism of
charging an 'ionophilic' pore is starkly different: for moderate ionophilicities, co-ions are expelled from the pore in a frontlike manner, with significant 'congestion' at the pore entrance predicted for strong ionophilicity.

2014. ACS Nano. The development of solid materials which are able to upconvert
optical radiation into photons of higher energy is attractive for many applications such
as photocatalytic cells and photovoltaic devices. However, to fully exploit
triplettriplet annihilation photon energy upconversion (TTA-UC), oxygen protection
is imperative because molecular oxygen is an ultimate quencher of the photon
upconversion process. So far, reported solid TTA-UC materials have focused mainly
on elastomeric matrices with low barrier properties because the TTA-UC efficiency
generally drops significantly in glassy and semicrystalline matrices. To overcome this
limit, for example, combine effective and sustainable annihilation upconversion with
exhaustive oxygen protection of dyes, we prepare a sustainable solid-state-like
material based on nanocellulose. Inspired by the structural buildup of leaves in
Nature, we compartmentalize the dyes in the liquid core of nanocellulose-based
capsules which are then further embedded in a cellulose nanofibers (NFC) matrix.

2014. ACS Nano. Organicinorganic metal halide perovskite solar cells were
fabricated by laminating films of a carbon nanotube (CNT) network onto a
CH3NH3PbI3 substrate as a hole collector, bypassing the energy-consuming
vacuum process of metal deposition. In the absence of an organic hole-transporting
material and metal contact, CH3NH3PbI3 and CNTs formed a solar cell with an
efficiency of up to 6.87%. The CH3NH3PbI3/CNTs solar cells were semitransparent
and showed photovoltaic output with dual side illuminations due to the transparency
of the CNT electrode. Adding spiro-OMeTAD to the CNT network forms a composite
electrode that improved the efficiency to 9.90% due to the enhanced hole extraction
and reduced recombination in solar cells.

A Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) team affiliated with the Nanosystems

Initiative Munich (NIM) has achieved a breakthrough in light-driven generation of
hydrogen with semiconductor nanocrystals by using a novel molecular shuttle to
enhance charge-carrier transport. The amount of solar radiation that reaches the
Earth in a year exceeds our current annual energy needs more than 10,000-fold.
However, it is not yet possible to store sufficiently high amounts of solar energy in an
efficient way. A promising approach is to utilize incoming solar radiation for the
photocatalytic generation of molecular hydrogen (H2) from water. Hydrogen gas is an
excellent energy source, with the product of its combustion being again water,
thereby making it free of greenhouse gases.

2014. Chemistry of Materials. Peptide-driven nanomaterials synthesis and

assembly has become a significant research thrust due to the capability to generate
a range of multifunctional materials with high spatial precision and tunable properties.
Despite the extensive amount of available literature, the majority of studies report the
use of free peptides to drive synthesis and assembly. Such strategies are not an
entirely accurate representation of nature, as many materials binding peptides found
in biological systems are sterically constrained to a larger biological motif. Herein we
report the synthesis of catalytic Pd nanomaterials using constrained peptides

Publicada en Journal of Nanoparticle Research, 02/07/2014

2014. Journal of Nanoparticle Research. A comprehensive assessment of the environmental risks posed by engineered
nanomaterials (ENMs) entering the environment is necessary, due in part to the recent predictions of ENM release
quantities and because ENMs have been identified in waste leachate. The technical complexity of measuring ENM fate
and transport processes in all environments necessitates identifying trends in ENM processes. Emerging information on
the environmental fate and toxicity of many ENMs was collected to provide a better understanding of their environmental
implications. Little research has been conducted on the fate of ENMs in the atmosphere; however, most studies indicate
that ENMs will in general have limited transport in the atmosphere due to rapid settling.

Diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings are an innovative technology, exhibiting the twin properties of mechanical
toughness and ultralow friction. These features, which are desirable in abrasive environments, have led to the
widespread adoption of DLC films in microelectromechanical systems, such as hard disk drives. But because these

planet, evolving or outlasting many obstacles they have encountered. In the 20th
century, this trend took a dramatic turn with the introduction of antibiotics and
vaccines. Nevertheless, since then, microbes have progressively eroded the
effectiveness of previously successful antibiotics by developing resistance, and many
infections have eluded conventional vaccine design approaches. Moreover, the
emergence of resistant and more virulent strains of bacteria has outpaced the
development of new antibiotics over the last few decades.

Estrategias de administracin para la liberacin sostenida del
frmaco en los pulmones
Publicada en Science Direct- Nano-Medicina-Equipos Mdicos, 08/06/2014

2014. Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews. Drug delivery to the lungs by inhalation
offers a targeted drug therapy for respiratory diseases. However, the therapeutic
efficacy of inhaled drugs is limited by their rapid clearance in the lungs. Carriers
providing sustained drug release in the lungs can improve therapeutic outcomes of
inhaled medicines because they can retain the drug load within the lungs and
progressively release the drug locally at therapeutic levels. This review presents the
different formulation strategies developed to control drug release in the lungs
including microparticles and the wide array of nanomedicines. Large and porous
microparticles offer excellent aerodynamic properties. Their large geometric size
reduces their uptake by alveolar macrophages, making them a suitable carrier for
sustained drug release in the lungs.

265 degrees Celsius. "The level of sensitivity achieved after cooling is accurate
enough for us to sense the weight of a large virus that is 100 billion times lighter than
a mosquito," said Dr Ben Buchler from the ANU Research School of Physics and

2014. ACS Nano. The sense of taste helps humans to obtain information and form a
picture of the world by recognizing chemicals in their environments. Over the past
decade, large advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms of taste
detection and mimicking its capability using artificial sensor devices. However, the
detection capability of previous artificial taste sensors has been far inferior to that of
animal tongues, in terms of its sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, we developed a
bioelectronic tongue using heterodimeric human sweet taste receptors for the
detection and discrimination of sweeteners with human-like performance, where
single-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistors were functionalized with
nanovesicles containing human sweet taste receptors and used to detect the binding
of sweeteners to the taste receptors.

Masa y namomembranas de Germanio sometido a esfuerzo para
aplicaciones optoelectrnicas: un anlisis numrico sistemtico
Publicada en IOPscience - Publicaciones Cientficas sobre Nano-Electrnica, 04/08/2014

2014. Semiconductor Science and Technology. Germanium is known to become a direct band gap material when
subject to a biaxial tensile strain of 2% (Vogl et al 1993 Phys. Scr. T49B 476) or uniaxial tensile strain of 4% (Aldaghri et
al 2012 J. Appl. Phys. 111 053106). This makes it appealing for the integration of optoelectronics into current CMOS
technology. It is known that the induced strain is highly dependent on the geometry and composition of the whole system
(stressors and substrate), leaving a large number of variables to the experimenters willing to realize this transition and
just a trial-and-error procedure. The study in this paper aims at reducing this freedom. We adopt a finite element
approach to systematically study the elastic strain induced by different configurations of lithographically-created SiGe
nanostructures on a Ge substrate, by focusing on their composition and geometries.

ZEISS presenta el LSM 880 con Airyscan
Publicada en Nanowerk - Nanotechnology News, 14/08/2014

Today, ZEISS is introducing LSM 880 with Airyscan. The new confocal laser
scanning microscope offers high sensitivity, enhanced resolution in x, y and z, and
high image-acquisition speed in one system. Sensitivity, Resolution, and Speed.
Surveys results reveal that confocal imaging would benefit the most from increased
sensitivity, resolution, and speed. Airyscan extends exactly those parameters. Users
achieve a 1.7 higher resolution in all spatial dimensions, 140 nm laterally and 400
nm axially. The improved sensitivity leads to better image quality and increased
speed. The whole imaging process is possible with standard sample preparation and
labeling protocols.

Mejorando el crecimiento dielctrico con materiales bidimensionales

Publicada en NanotechWeb - Nanotechnology News, 14/08/2014

Graphenes hydrophobic nature makes it difficult to deposit dielectrics on its surface.

This limits its application in optoelectronics such as field effect transistors (FET).
Reporting in Nanotechnology, researchers may have solved this problem. They
utilize two-dimensional (2D) dielectric materials, such as single-sided fluorinated
graphene (SFG) or hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), as a seed layer for atomic layer
deposition (ALD).

Nuevo ensayo revela pureza del grafeno
Publicada en Nanowerk - Nanotechnology News, 13/08/2014

Graphene may be tough, but those who handle it had better be tender. The
environment surrounding the atom-thick carbon material can influence its electronic
performance, according to researchers at Rice and Osaka universities who have
come up with a simple way to spot contaminants. ecause its so easy to accidently
introduce impurities into graphene, labs led by physicists Junichiro Kono of Rice and
Masayoshi Tonouchi of Osakas Institute of Laser Engineering discovered a way to
detect and identify out-of-place molecules on its surface through terahertz
spectroscopy.

Publicada en NanotechWeb_Tech update - Nanotechnology News, 12/08/2014

The first effective technique for growing a batch of single-walled carbon nanotubes
(SWCNTs) that all have the same molecular structure has been developed by
scientists in Switzerland. The new process involves using "seed molecules" on a
platinum substrate to grow SWCNTs with the desired structure. The breakthrough
could be extremely important to those developing electronic devices based on
SWCNTs because nanotubes with different structures can have very different
electronic properties.

Colillas de cigarrillo pueden ser convertidas en partes elctricas
Publicada en EIN - Nanotechnology News Today - Nanotechnology Research News,
08/08/2014

Globally, were throwing out around 5.6 trillion cigarette butts every year, and theyre
both toxic and non-biodegradable. But what if we could convert all of this waste into
something useful?. A team of researchers from the Seoul National University has
discovered that cigarette butt material - cellulose acetate fibre - can be made into a
coating needed to produce a device known as a supercapacitor. Supercapacitors are
powerful components used in many different kinds of electronics to store large
amounts of electrical energy. Theyre used for backing up batteries in computers and
smartphones, and for storing renewable energy in electric cars and wind turbines.
Needless to say, we're going to need to produce a lot of supercapacitors in the
foreseeable future, so why not tap into the 766,571 metric tonnes of cigarette butts
that are disposed of globally every year?.
