ORIENTATION (First Activity):

The New Era University
The New Era University (NEU) is a Higher Educational Institution (HEI) in the Philippines started as New Era
Educational Institute (NEEI) in June 1975. It was formally incorporated under Republic Act 1459 as a private non-stock,
non-sectarian, non-profit educational institution aiming to develop academic excellence, professional responsibility, and
social awareness founded on genuine Christian principles.
NEU as an academic institution endeavors to develop among its students academic excellence, professional
responsibility, and global social awareness. It recognizes that the individuals cannot and should not live apart from the
mainstream of the community where they belong and that, as social individuals, they have a responsibility toward the
society and other stakeholders. Further, NEU upholds the constitutional mandate that all schools shall aim to inculcate
love of country, teach the duties of citizenship, develop moral character, personal discipline and scientific, technological,
and vocational efficiency for national and global development.
NEU likewise endeavors to assist its constituents in acquiring fundamental abilities, competencies and attitudes
so that they may grow and strive to be an effective and useful citizen of the country.
While realizing the foregoing, NEU will promote among its clientele an integrated personality that is morally and
culturally aware, an asset to the world, to humanity, and most importantly, a representation of a true Christian.

The Open University Online Attendance

Online attendance is MANDATORY. Each student is required to visit the classroom at least once (or
twice) a week. Our virtual classroom records the time of visit and the location of every visitor through the IP
address. In every log in, the program records the IP address location of a computer terminal.
Online attendance may be satisfied by downloading assignments, checking updates and announcements,
visiting/browsing the classroom, or sending messages/questions to the teacher(s) and/or staff.
The purpose of mandatory online attendance is for the student to be able to read announcements &
private messages sent to him/her. Also, for the student to download the Guide and Basis to Study for his/her
subject(s).

The Open University Communication

Each student must communicate with staff and professors in a respectful manner.
Each student may send a message to the staff or their professors in the Virtual Classroom for their
academic-related concerns. If after a week the student has not gotten a response, he/she may recourse to the
Director's Office by sending a message directly to the Director's account in the Virtual Classroom.

The Course Quick Guide (CQG)

The Course Quick Guide (CQG) is an Outcomes-Based hierarchy presentation of all topics that cover
the entire semester in each subject/course. It is the concise (streamlined/paced) version of the regular syllabus
used in the non-online classes. The CQG highlights the core learning competencies and key course requirements,
and then, provides students with supplemental information in separate documents, i.e. the Guide and Basis to
Study (GBS).
The CQG further serves as the learner's reference for each subject. It intends to create an environment
where the learner gets the bigger part of lesson exploration rather than gathering information alone. In the CQG,
the information is already there and is clearly outlined. The outlined topics (called keywords and key phrases)
will give a chance to every learner to expose their views and to create various opportunities of learning the
subject matter.

The Guide and Basis to Study (GBS)

The Guide and Basis to Study is a modified (or hybrid) version of the regular classroom lesson plan
and/or study guides. It is the refined transcript of actual classroom discussion which guides the students in their
studies. In order for the GBS to be more efficient and effective, it must be Outcomes-Based Education (OBE)
compliant.
A semester under the Online University is divided into two terms, the midterm and the final term. Each
term is composed of 9 weeks. The midterm covers Weeks 1-9. Weeks 1-8 being the recitation, assignment, and
study guide distribution weeks; and Week 9 being the midterm examination week. The final term covers Weeks
10-18. Weeks 10-17 being the recitation, assignment, and study guide distribution weeks; and Week 18 being the
final term examination week.
Hence, there are eighteen (18) GBSs given for the whole semester. The 9th and 18th GBSs are
instructions for conducting Online Term Examinations (OTE). For more information, refer to the Virtual
Classroom Orientation Tab.
