The Entombment of Christ

I first saw this painting during the UST architecture Italy trip. I saw the
actual painting in Rome and the tour guide explained it very well. I instantly
fell in love with this painting since it has so much character and depth. The

painting has a deeper meaning than meets the eye; the passion and
creativity of the painter flows within the whole painting itself. It was the
painting that had the most impact on me and made me realize the beauty of
the painters belief and ideology.
There are several messages and interpretations given by the painting.
First is the seldom noticed plant at the lower left of the entombment which
can be interpreted as the giving of new life by Christ as He dies or His
resurrection. There is also the bloodlessness of Christs death as if to
demonstrate His holiness and divinity. The hand gestures pointing to the
heavens and the earth can be a reference to the message of Christ in which
God comes to earth, and mankind reconciled with the heavens. The
composition of every detail is so well thought of that nothing was left out;
this is a good example of an art that has a soul. Reason for it is because the
painting reflects the artists personality and identity; it shows the artists
unique interpretation of Christs entombment. Even to a non-believer or
random patron, the painting itself easily attracts attention.
I also like the way Caravaggio paints, he pays attention to the minutest
detail and the colors used are very realistic. The balance and symmetry in
this painting is so good as well as its lighting composition. The veins of the
people in the painting gives it a sense of realism and it is just so amazing
that someone from this time can paint something of this caliber. This artist
had no tutorials from the internet and maybe developed his own style as well
that made him unique from all the others. In my point of view, it takes a lot
of hard work to paint a masterpiece of this level; maybe its also because of
my experience in creating realistic drawings that makes me appreciate this
kind of art form.
In conclusion, Caravaggios painting is a real masterpiece and will
forever be my favorite painting of all time. It captures the true talent of the
artist and also grabs the attention of the patron. I dont even know exactly
why this painting appeals so much to me but it will always be a treasured
memory that I got to see and appreciate this painting up close. Someday I
would also like to create a painting of this caliber and share my own artistic
interpretation of my ideals and beliefs.
