Collection Development Evaluation Plan

Description of the Site, Faculty Teaming, and Student Demographics

I currently serve as the Media Specialist at Americus Sumter High School South in Americus,
Georgia. Americus Sumter South is one of two public high schools in Americus. ASHS is part of
the Sumter County School System which consists of seven schools. The second High School
serves as the ninth grade academy. Americus Sumter South services students from grade 10- 12.
Our present enrollment is 817 students. It also houses a professional learning center. The faculty
and staff is comprised of 36 classroom teachers, 5 special education resource teachers, 9
departmental specialists (Music, P.E, Counselors, Media Specialist), 7 Para-professionals, and
two graduation coaches.
The racial makeup 75% African-American, 18% White, 6% Hispanic, and 2% Asian and
with regards to gender 51% of the students are female and 49 percent are boys. Americus Sumter
High School South is a Title 1 school as over 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced
lunch. According to the 2010-2011 data on the Georgia High School Graduation Test the scores
were as follows English Language Arts: 83, Math:72; Social Studies:72, and Science:89. ASHS
has failed to meet the graduation rate requirement and they are now placed on NI5 status.
Americus has a population of 17,000 and is the county seat of Sumter County which includes

Plains, GA, which is the home of Former President Jimmy Carter. The racial makeup of the City
is similar to that of the high school. The area has experienced the loss of industry and is currently
considered an economically depressed area.
The media center is located in the main part of the building. It is located in the center of
the main floor of the school. The resources available in the media center include a collection of
12,287 items. There are 12,278 books available for students to use, which averages 15.03 books
per student. The collection also offers over 45DVD/VHS titles, the media center circulation for
the previous 12 month period was 8,261. The average age of the entire collection is 1985 which
is about 17 years off of the recommended latest average date which is 2002. The school has
access to GALILEO and to Destiny One search. ASHS also has 18 personal computers and 28
laptops for student and faculty use. The media center also has Wi-Fi access and conducts a
morning program from the media center. The media center is also the technology hub for the
school. The media specialist is responsible for all of the technology in the school. Each
classroom has a Promethean interactive white board, and a video projector with VHS, DVD, PC
connection and each classroom has only one PC.
The topic of my content development plan comes from the curriculum of 10th grade
American History students. Each student at ASHS has to complete a research paper for each nine
weeks in various subjects. There are presently 330 tenth graders at the high school. There are
currently six American History teachers and two Co- teachers at the school. Teachers are
assigned six classes which last for an hour.

Collection Evaluation
I chose Social Studies because of my history background and I am very familiar with a
lot of the resources on the subject. The school has a shortage of textbooks which prevented the
teachers from issuing books. Teachers have to rely on print and online resources. The layout of
the Media center is not conducive to readily finding materials. The shelves are located away
from the entrance of the media center toward the back of the center. The nonfiction books are
located in the middle of the shelves. The shelves are labeled by Dewey Decimal numbers and
arranged in alphabetical order. There is a map and a collection of reference books on the tables
on the left side of the room toward the bank of computers. The students can obtain the password
for Galileo from the media specialist. The shelves look a bit aged and are not appealing when
looking for material to use.
In order to determine what the collection offered by way of print and audio video
materials for the 10th grade Social Studies GPS, CCS on the primary causes of the American
Revolution, I found material related to the Standard by completing a DESTINY Search. I used
the keywords and subjects I used were; American Revolution, Proclamation of 1763 and
Intolerable Acts. I conducted another search using the Dewey Decimal numbers 973 and I found
a lot of reference books on the American Revolution. I began to physically search the shelves for
the books I needed and discovered there were not a lot of fiction books on the American
Revolution. I also discovered that many of the social studies book in the collection were social
studies textbooks. I examined the collection of textbooks some of which dated back to 1981. I

did not find much information about the Sons and Daughters of Liberty and the Proclamation of
1763. I found there was not a lot of up to date material. I was told that not many students
checkout history or social studies books. I did find some biographies on George Washington,
Paul Revere, and Benjamin Franklin. There was only one book on Thomas Paine. I found one
book on the French and Indian War and it was an AP US History book.. I found several books
that only mentioned the Boston Tea Party as a matter of taxation without representation and no
information on the Stamp Act. There are no books that present the Revolution from a
multicultural perspective. One the biggest surprise was to find a current DVD on the American
Revolution. I found Libertys Kids and it explained the issue of taxation without representation.
The chart below indicates what my investigation revealed. I have included related fiction
titles under the corresponding nonfiction subject and standard, but as there is subject overlap in
the fiction titles, I included total circulation numbers for the books for each standard.

Summary of Collection needs

Average
Reading
Level

1. My first goal is to purchase items for the appropriate reading levels. I wanted a balance of
books for those who do not quite read on the high school level and also material for those
who are gifted.

2. I also want to update the offerings for the curriculum. Many of the titles were outdated
and did not contain accurate information. This also includes filling in the gaps for
information on Thomas Paine, The Proclamation of 1763, and The Intolerable Acts.
3. There is a need for current reference material. I have included several encyclopedias and
reference sets in my order in an effort to update the reference offerings.
4. I also wanted to include material in multiple formats such as DVDs and e books. These
items can assist teachers in differentiating instruction.
5. I also wanted to include the experience of women and African Americans during the
American Revolution.
Material Orders and Budget Summary
Follett Library Resources was the only vendor I used to purchase materials. I purchased material
based on my findings. I purchased items that represented the gap in audio visual resources as
well as updated reference material as well as materials that addressed the experiences of African
Americans and women during the American Revolution. The final total for all my materials was
$4,005.38 not including cataloging and processing costs.
