Re: Student Nurse Externship

I am writing in response to the Nurse Externship Program available at Northwestern memorial Hospital (NMH).
Currently I am privileged to be a NMH employee and have been since June 11, 2001 as a Unit Secretary 8 East
Stone Institute of Psychiatry. It would be a pleasure to meet with you and discuss how I can continue to be a
valuable asset within NMH in another capacity.

As you can see from the enclosed resume, I am currently enrolled in a Baccalaureate Nursing program at
Purdue University Calumet. With the successful completion of two Medical-Surgical and one Psychiatric
clinical rotations, my knowledge and practice of patient care has been greatly enhanced. Some of the skills I
have acquired are outlined within the attached resume. Because I have learned and gained much experience
from Purdue, one of my professors was impressed by my assessment skills. I was then chosen to participate in a
pod-cast which teaches other nursing students how to perform physical health assessments.

What I am hoping to gain from the nurse externship at NMH is exposure to other clinical settings that will
contribute to me becoming a well rounded and skilled nurse. The Emergency Department and Critical care
units are two areas I am highly interested in working on, however I am open to other areas as well in which I
can continue to gain experience and knowledge that is pertinent to me becoming an outstanding nurse.

What my resume fails to outline is some of the characteristics I possess that I feel are very important in the role
I desire to play as a nurse extern. I play close attention to detail which is very important in critical care and
acute settings. My communication skills allow me to be more confident and efficient. I have experience in
helping patients and their families in a professional and effective manner. Floating to other NMH units as a
secretary has exposed me to other areas of the hospital aside form Psychiatry. Being a NMH employee has
given me a Patient’s First mentality which is crucial in patient care. Most importantly what I value about
myself is my open mindedness to learn new things and acquire new skills that promote professional and
personal growth.

If chosen to participate in the nurse externship program at NMH, it is my plan to continue my career at NMH as
a Patient Care Technician and a Registered nurse upon graduation. Having been a NMH employee for almost
seven years, I look forward continual progression here. I really look forward to further discussing of my
candidacy for the Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Nursing Externship. Please feel free to contact me
anytime; I can be reached at 773-343-3740. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Joy Steele
