Millenials and their environmental concerns

Many politicians fail to notice this unique Millennial perspective. Members of the generation
disagree sharply with their elders on the best way to address environmental challenges, preferring to
tackle them through individual initiative and grassroots action rather than a heavy-handed top down
bureaucratic approach.
Of course, Millennials are the most environmentally conscious generation in the nations history.
Almost two-thirds of Millennials believe global warming is real and 43% of them think that it is
caused by human activity, levels much higher than among all other generations. But, as Weinberger
also wrote, While environmentalists of years past were primarily aiming to bring clean air and clean
water concerns into the national policymaking calculus, environmentalists today are far more
worried about solving global problems like climate change by using local environmental solutions.

Their meeting point is the internet

Forty-four percent of the Silent Generation those born between 1928 and
1945 say the word "environmentalist" describes them very well, compared to
42 percent of Boomers and Gen-Xers, and only 32 percent of Millennials. This
is partly because younger adults simply dont like labels back in the late '90s
the Gen-Xers were the cohort least likely to identify as environmentalists.

The Millennial Generation (born 1982-2004) today comprises roughly 100

million people mostly in their teens and 20s. You may be tired of hearing
about them. Their attitudes and behaviors have been scrutinized from every
angle, with labels ranging from The Me Me Me Generation to Generation
Nice.

Perhaps the only adequate parallel for the optimism of todays Millennials is
the G.I. Generation during the Great Depression, who famously
accentuated the positive even at the bleakest of times.
This attitude may grow even stronger among late-wave Millennials. In a
recent study of late-wave Millennials, MTV summed up their mentality
with the old World War II adage keep calm and carry on. This group has
come of age during the downturn and is adapting somewhat of an Xer
survivalist mentality to prepare for life in the brave new economy.

Teenagers and twenty-somethings have been dubbed the Millennial Generation, or

simply Millennials. But what does it mean?
Generation Y definition
The term Millennials generally refers to the generation of people born between the early
1980s and the early 2000s. Perhaps the most commonly used birth range for this group
is 1982-2000. The Millennial Generation is also known as Generation Y, because it
comes after Generation X those people between the early 1960s and the 1980s. It
has also been called the Peter Pan or Boomerang Generation because of the
propensity of some to move back in with their parents, perhaps due to economic
constraints, and a growing tendency to delay some of the typical adulthood rites of
passage like marriage or starting a career.
There is a spirited, if not tiresome, debate about whether Millennials are self-entitled
narcissists or open-minded do-gooders; surely the truth lies somewhere in-between.
Generally, however, there does seem to be more of an emphasis on the self than in
previous generations, one reason why this group has been called Generation Me.
Other scholars have pointed out that the attempt to make generalizations about an
entire generation is a futile effort. Further, some have suggested that discussion of
"Millennials" tends to focus on mostly white youth from suburban areas, ignoring the
unique experience of immigrants and minorities.

Millennials are
Multitaskers

Millennials are multitasking pros and can juggle many responsibilities at once. This
also means that we are easily distracted and find social media and texting hard to
resist.

Millennials know everything there is to know about social media because we are
living it. We are constantly perusing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. - its how we
share and get information.

Tech-Savvy

Theres no doubt that the majority of Millennials are more tech-savvy than other
generations

Confident. With high levels of collective optimism and a focus on

positive solutions for big problems, this generation is striking an upbeat new
tone about their ownand the nationsfuture.
Team oriented. From youth soccer and social networking to
collaborative learning and community service, Millennials are developing
strong team instincts, tight peer bonds, and a rising sense of civic
engagement.
Conventional. Taking pride in their improving behavior and
comfortable with their parents values, Millennials provide a modern twist to
the traditional belief that social rules and standards can make life easier.
Pressured. Pushed to work hard, plan for the long term, and take full
advantage of the opportunities offered them, Millennials feel a trophy kid
pressure to excel, both in the classroom and in the workplace.
