Dictionary/Glossary Lesson

2nd Grade
Materials needed: worksheets with science vocabulary words on them
(words will be grouped according to where theyre to be located print
dictionary, online dictionary, or glossary) , access to computers,
set of dictionaries,
space-related nonfiction books (see below),
iRespond Student Response Kit

Standards:
ELACC2.L.4.e Use glossaries and beginning dictionaries, both print and
digital, to determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases.
S2E2 -- Students will investigate the position of sun and moon to show
patterns throughout the year.
Setup:
Create three stations where students can find the vocabulary words. One
will have 7-8 print dictionaries, another will have 7-8 computers available
with a shortcut to Cobb Digital Library, and the last will have 8-10 nonfiction
books having to do with space, moons, the sun, and stars.
Procedures:
1. The classroom teacher will use the ActivBoard to show scanned pages
from a dictionary, teacher will review the use of the dictionary, including
guide words and where to find the meanings.
2. The Media Specialist will use the ActivBoard to show scanned pages from
a nonfiction book, teacher will review the parts of a book, particularly
glossaries and how to use them.

3. The classroom teacher will go over the worksheets with the students,
pointing out that each group of words should be looked for in a different
place (print dictionary, online dictionary, or glossary).
4. The classroom teacher will put students in groups of 7 or 8.
5. Each group of students will begin at a different station, and will find the
meanings of the vocabulary words indicated for that source. Allow 10-15
minutes at each station.
6. Students will continue to rotate with their group to the remaining stations
for 10-15 minutes, finding the words indicated for that station.
7. Once students have located all vocabulary words, instruct them to come
to the carpet for a group review.
Assessment:
Students will take an iRespond quiz where they will be given a definition and
asked to choose the word that matches it. Students will also turn in their
worksheets to their teachers.
