ST MATTHEW 9 : 9 13
The Holy Apostle and Evangelist, St Matthew, was also named Levi. (MARK 2:14; LUKE
He was one of the Twelve Apostles and was brother of the Apostle, St James
Alphaeus. (MARK 3:18; LUKE 6:45; ACTS 1:13 & MARK 2:14).
He was a Publican, or Tax-Collector for Rome, in a time when the Judeans were
under the oppressive rule of the Roman Empire.
He lived in the Galilean city of Capernaum, and from the moment that our Lord
Jesus Christ Called him: Come, follow Me he left everything and faithfully
accompanied our Divine Saviour. (Matthew 9:9)
Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Disciples accepted without any reservation or
hesitation St Matthews invitation to dine at his house, where they kept
company with other Publican friends and acquaintances of St Matthew, who
were all regarded by the Judeans especially the self-righteous, arrogant and
unmerciful Pharisees and Scribes - as being the worst kind of sinners.
Publicans who collected taxes from their countrymen did so more often than not
by corrupt means, thereby making great financial profits for themselves.
Being so corrupt and despised, the Tax Collectors were hard-hearted, and
exceedingly greedy and cruel to their fellow citizens who considered them
pernicious betrayers of their country and religion of birth.
The title Publican was equal to public sinner and idol-worshipper. To even
speak to an abhorrent Tax-collector was considered sinful, and to associate
with any of them was certainly regarded as defilement.
Consequently, the Hebrew Teachers and others of social status among the
Judeans failed to comprehend that in fact, our Lord and Saviour the Great
Divine Messiah - had ...come to call not the Righteous, but sinners to
Repentance. (MATTHEW 9:13).
St Matthew sincerely acknowledged his sinfulness and subsequently repaid
fourfold anyone he had cheated. Furthermore, he distributed his remaining
possessions to the poor, and he then faithfully accompanied our Lord Jesus
Christ together with the other chosen Apostles.
St Matthew paid strict attention to the Instructions and Teachings of the Divine
Teacher, and he personally witnessed His innumerable Divine Miracles while
he travelled throughout the region with the Twelve Apostles preaching to
...the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel (MATTHEW. 10:6).
He also witnessed the intense suffering, the humiliation, the unjust, illegal
scourging, the Death, and Resurrection of our Saviour, and was one of the 120
Faithful Disciples who were present at our Lord Jesus glorious Ascension into
Heaven.
Having received the Grace of the Holy Spirit, which descended upon the Apostles
on the day of Pentecost, St Matthew preached in Palestine for several years.
At the request of the Judean converts in Jerusalem, St Matthew wrote his Gospel,
describing the Earthly Life of our Beloved Saviour, before departing to preach
the Gospel of Christ in faraway lands. St Matthew wrote in Aramaic, and then
his Holy Gospel was translated into Greek the international language of that
time. (The Aramaic text has not survived, but many of the linguistic and
cultural-historical peculiarities of the Greek translation give indications of it.)
St Matthew preached among people who were awaiting the Great Divine
Messiah and his Gospel consisted of vivid proof that our Lord Jesus Christ is
indeed the long-awaited Messiah Who was foretold by the Holy Prophets of

God, and he also confirmed that there would never be another Messiah
another Divine Saviour. (MATTHEW 11:3).
The Preaching and Deeds of our Saviour are presented by St Matthew in three
divisions, constituting three aspects of the Service of the Divine Messiah:
Matthew 5 7 - PROPHET AND LAW-GIVER Matthew 8 25 - LORD OF ALL CREATION - both visible and invisible
Matthew 26 27 - HIGH PRIEST AND ULTIMATE BLOOD SACRIFICE for all the sins of all
mankind forever.
The Theological content of the Gospel, besides the Christological Themes, also
includes the Teaching concerning the Kingdom of God and the Holy Church of
Christ, of which our Lord Jesus Christ often spoke in Parables:
Matthew 5 7 teaches us about our essential INNER PREPARATION for entering
into the Eternal Kingdom of God.
Matthew 10 11 deals with THE WORTHINESS OF SERVERS of the Church in the
world
Matthew 13 mentions THE SIGNS OF THE KINGDOM AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH in the souls
of mankind
Matthew 18: 1-35; 19:13-30; 20:1-16; 25-27 & 23:1-28 concerns the HUMILITY AND
SIMPLICITY OF THE INHERITORS of the Eternal Kingdom
Matthew 24 25 is about THE ESCHATOLOGICAL REVELATIONS of the Kingdom in the
Second Coming or Reappearance (Parousia) of Christ within the daily
Spiritual Life of the Church.
The Kingdom of Heaven and the Church are closely interconnected in the
Spiritual Experience of Christianity:
Matthew 16:18-19 & 28:18-20 the Church is the historical embodiment of the
Kingdom of Heaven in the world, and the Kingdom of Heaven is the Church
of Christ in its Eschatological Perfection (i.e. concerning the last aspects of this
temporary earthly existence.)
St Matthew spread the Divine Truth of the Holy Gospel of Christ to Syria, Media,
Persia, Parthia, and Ethiopia - where his Missionary Journey finally ended with
his Martyrdom for the Love of our Lord.
At that time, Ethiopia was inhabited by tribes of cannibals with primitive customs
and beliefs.
By the Grace and Will of God, St Matthew founded the Church in Ethiopia when he
converted some of the idol-worshippers to Faith in Christ, and built a temple
in the city of Mirmena, establishing his Faithful companion, St Platon, as
Bishop.
While the Holy Apostle was Fervently Entreating God for the Conversion of the
Ethiopians, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared before St Matthew in the Form of a
Youth, and He presented him with a Staff, which He commanded him to plant
at the doors of the church.
Our Lord Jesus told His Faithful Apostle that a Tree would grow from that Staff and
it would bear Fruit, and from its roots would flow a stream of water. When the
Ethiopians had washed themselves in the water and eaten the Fruit, they
would abandon their wild ways and became gentle and good.
As St Matthew carried the Staff towards the church, he was met by the wife and
son of the Ruler, Fulvian, who were afflicted by unclean spirits. In the Name of
Christ the Holy Apostle Healed them, and that Divine Miracle converted a
number of the pagans to our Lord.
However, Fulvian did not want his subjects to become Christian and cease
worshipping their pagan gods, which always brought in a lot of wealth for the
temples and thus for the ruler as well. So he gathered his people and falsely

accused St Matthew of sorcery immediately issuing orders for his arrest and
execution.
St Matthew was seized and bound upside down to a stake that was surrounded
deep stacks of wood, which was set alight.
As the tremendously hot flames flared brightly, everyone saw that St Matthew
remained unharmed, whereupon Fulvian ordered more wood to be added to
the blaze. He also had twelve idols set up around the pyre, which were quickly
melted by the intensity of the heat.
The huge flames suddenly flared toward Fulvian, and nearly engulfed him, and
in his abject terror he entreated St Matthew for Mercy.
The Intercessory Prayers of the Holy Apostles immediately doused the all
consuming flames, and when the acrid smoke had cleared, the witnesses saw
that although his body had remained completely untouched by the searing
fire, St Matthew had surrendered his soul to our Lord and Reposed in Peace.
Fulvian deeply Repented, yet he still had residual doubts.
He ordered the Sanctified Holy Relics of St Matthew to be sealed into a heavy iron
casket and thrown into the sea, because Fulvian reasoned that if the Almighty
God of St Matthew could preserve his body in the deep waves of the sea, as He
had preserved him in the destructive flames, then it would be a proper,
confirmed reason to worship this One True God Who was so All Powerful and
Eternal.
That night St Matthew appeared in a Vision to St Platon the Bishop, requesting
him accompanied by the Clergy as witnesses - to go to the sea shore where
they would find the heavy casket.
Fulvian and his entire retinue, as well as the Clergy went with St Platon to the
shore where to everyones immense surprise the heavy metal casket had
indeed been carried by the waves, to the closest point to the church.
With all due reverence, the people took up the casket and, led by the honourable
Bishop Platon, they carried it to the church that had been built by St Matthew.
Fulvian besought the Forgiveness of St Matthew, and sincerely Repented all his
sins.
In due time, having received Spiriutal Enlightenment and having been properly
prepared, Fulvian was joyfully Baptised by St Platon, who, in Obedience to a
Divine Commandment of our Lord, bestowed upon on the former pagan Ruler
the name Matthew.
Fulvian-Matthew abdicated his position as Ruler of the Ethiopians and was
eventually ordained into the Holy Priesthood of Christ our Lord and Saviour.
When St Platon had Reposed in Peace in the Lord, St Matthew, the Holy Apostle
and Evangelist of Christ, appeared in a Divine Vision to Presbyter FulvianMatthew and exhorted him to head the Ethiopian Church.
Having been elected as the successor to Bishop Platon St Fulvian-Matthew toiled
faithfully for the rest of his natural life, preaching the Word of God teaching
his people the Divine Truth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and
continuing until his very last breath, the Holy Mission of his Heavenly Patron.
May the Memory of St Matthew be Eternal, and may he ceaselessly continue to
Intercede on our behalf for the Salvation of our immortal souls.
