SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS

Year B

GLORY TO THE SAINTS

OF ALL TIMES!

he celebration of the Solemnity of All Saints is a wonderful opportunity to give glory to God for the abundance of holiness in the Church,
and to honor all the heroes and heroines of the Christian faith.

The canonized saints are only the tip of the iceberg the iceberg of
Christian holiness which comprises millions of holy people whose names are
not found in the calendars. They performed no miracles, nor did they enjoy
any supernatural apparition. They were only ordinary Christians just as
we are. The only thing that was extraordinary in them was their faithful
love for God and generous love for people.

Their success is an encouragement to all of us, ordinary faithful who share
with them the sincere desire to go to heaven. All we have to do is follow
their style to live our ordinary lives loving God and neighbor to the best of
our ability and thereby making of our lives a beautiful gift for the Lord.

Entrance Antiphon

(To be recited only when no Entrance

Hymn is sung.)

Let us all rejoice in the

Lord, as we celebrate the feast
day in honor of all the Saints,
at whose festival the Angels
rejoice and praise the Son of
God.

Greeting
P Blessed be the Lord our God
who called us all to share His
glory in heaven. May His grace
and peace be with you all!
All And with your spirit!
Penitential Act
P My brothers and sisters, we
were all created for heaven and
are expected to walk the way that
leads to it. Let us realize the many
ways and many times we have
failed to do so, and humbly ask
the Lords forgiveness. (Pause)

P Lord Jesus, at our baptism

you have made us your adopted brothers and sisters,
and heirs to the eternal happiness of heaven. Forgive
us for the times we have
failed to honor our baptismal commitments. Lord,
have mercy!
All Lord, have mercy!
P Lord Jesus, with your teaching and example you have
showed us how to live as
children of the Kingdom.
Forgive us for the times we
have chosen to live according to the principles of this
world. Christ, have mercy!
All Christ, have mercy!
P Lord Jesus, in the Beatitudes you have outlined for
us some of the basic virtues that should characterize our lives. Forgive us for
the times we have given
priority to the allurements
of a sinful life. Lord, have
mercy!
All Lord, have mercy!

P
May almighty God have
mercy on us, forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
All Amen!

Gloria
All Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people
of good will. We praise you,
we bless you, we adore you, we
glorify you, we give you thanks
for your great glory, Lord
God, heavenly King, O God,
almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of
God, Son of the Father, you take
away the sins of the world, have
mercy on us; you take away the
sins of the world, receive our
prayer; you are seated at the right
hand of the Father, have mercy
on us. For you alone are the Holy
One, you alone are the Lord, you
alone are the Most High, Jesus
Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.

Collect (Opening Prayer)

P Almighty ever-living God,
by whose gift we venerate in one
celebration the merits of all the
Saints, bestow on us, we pray,
through the prayers of so many
intercessors, an abundance of the
reconciliation with you for which
we earnestly long.
Through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and
reigns with you in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever
and ever.
All Amen!

1st Reading
Rv 7:2-4.9-14
Exiled on the island of Patmos, the apostle John is caught
up in ecstasy and has a breathtaking vision of the immense
throng of all the saints in heaven.
They give glory to God for the
salvation granted them through
the blood of the Lamb, Jesus
Christ.
R A proclamation from the
Book of Revelation
I, John, saw another angel
come up from the East, holding the seal of the living God.
He cried out in a loud voice to
the four angels who were given
power to damage the land and
the sea, Do not damage the
land or the sea or the trees until
we put the seal on the foreheads
of the servants of our God. I
heard the number of those who
had been marked with the seal
one hundred and forty-four
thousand marked from every
tribe of the Israelites.
After this, I had a vision
of a great multitude, which
no one could count, from every nation, race, people and
tongue. They stood before the
throne and before the Lamb,
wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their
hands. They cried out in a loud
voice: Salvation comes from
our God, who is seated on the
throne, and from the Lamb!
All the angels stood around the
throne and around the elders
and the four living creatures.

They prostrated themselves before the throne, worshiped God, and exclaimed:
Amen! Blessing and glory, wisdom and thanksgiving, honor,
power, and might be to our
God forever and ever. Amen!

Then one of the elders
spoke up and said to me, Who
are these [who are] wearing
white robes, and where did
they come from?

I said to him, My lord,
you are the one who knows.
He said to me, These are the
ones who have survived the
time of great distress; they
have washed their robes and
made them white in the blood
of the Lamb.

The Word of the Lord!

All Thanks be to God!

Responsorial Psalm Ps 24
R Lord, this is the people that
longs to see your face!

* The Lords are the earth

and its fullness; the world and
those who dwell in it. For he
founded it upon the seas and
established it upon the rivers.

R.
* Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord? Or who may
stand in his holy place? He
whose hands are sinless, whose
heart is clean, who desires not
what is vain. R.
* He shall receive a blessing
from the Lord, a reward from
God his savior. Such is the race
that seeks for him, that seeks
the face of the God of Jacob. R.

2nd Reading
1 Jn 3:1-3
We participate in Christs
divine sonship, so we must keep
ourselves pure from every defilement because we are destined to
enjoy Gods loving presence for
ever.

R A proclamation from the

First Letter of John

Beloved: See what love the
Father has bestowed on us that
we may be called the children
of God.
Yet so we are. The reason
the world does not know us
is that it did not know him.
Beloved, we are Gods children now; what we shall be
has not yet been revealed. We
do know that when it is revealed, we shall be like him,
for we shall see him as he is.
Everyone who has this hope
based on him makes himself
pure, as he is pure.

The Word of the Lord!
All Thanks be to God!

Gospel Acclamation
All Alleluia! Alleluia!
Come to me, all you who
labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest,
says the Lord!
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Gospel
Mt 5:1-12
Todays Gospel text is commonly called the Beatitudes.
This very famous passage exalts
some of the virtues that Jesus
considers indispensable for all
those who want to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
P The Lord be with you!
All And with your spirit!
P
A proclamation from the
holy Gospel according to
Matthew
All Glory to you, O Lord!
When Jesus saw the
crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down,
his disciples came to him. He
began to teach them, saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. Blessed are they who
mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for
they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God. Blessed

are the peacemakers, for

they will be called children
of God. Blessed are they who
are persecuted for the sake of
righteousness, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven. Blessed are
you when they insult you and
persecute you and utter every
kind of evil against you falsely
because of me. Rejoice and be
glad, for your reward will be
great in heaven.

All Praise to you, Lord Jesus
Christ!

Homily
Profession of Faith
(Nicene Creed)

All I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven

and earth, of all things visible
and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus
Christ, the Only Begotten Son of
God, born of the Father before all
ages. God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him
all things were made. For us men
and for our salvation he came
down from heaven, (bow)* and
by the Holy Spirit was incarnate
of the Virgin Mary, and became
man.* For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he
suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the
dead and his kingdom will have
no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and the
Son, who with the Father and the
Son is adored and glorified, who
has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic
and apostolic Church. I confess
one Baptism for the forgiveness
of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the
life of the world to come. Amen!

Prayer of the Faithful

P As we honor all the saints

in heaven, including the most

unassuming and unknown, let
us offer our humble prayers that
as many as possible may share
their eternal happiness. Let our
response be:
All God of all holiness, hear
our prayer!
C For the Church, the earthly
home of all saints: May she be
the loving mother who teaches
her children to pursue their sanctification by living the values
enshrined in the Beatitudes. Let
us pray! R.
C For the Holy Father and all
other spiritual leaders: May they
be living beacons of holiness patterned after the example of Jesus
and Mary, and all the saints. Let
us pray!
R.
C For all our leaders: May they
give justice to the oppressed,
work for true peace, and with
their right use of funds and resources, ensure that our countrymen do not go hungry or thirsty.
Let us pray! R.
C For Christians who are persecuted for their faith: May they
stand firm in the face of suffering and death, confident of the
glorious reward that awaits them
in heaven. Let us pray!
R.
C For all our deceased brothers
and sisters: May they be admitted to the joys of eternal life in
heaven, through the mercy of
God and the intercession of all
the saints. Let us pray! R.
C For all of us: May we discover anew the call to become saints
and pursue this goal through the
generous fulfillment of our duties in imitation of the saintly
people who have preceded us.
Let us pray! R.
C
Let us pray in silence for our
personal intentions. (Pause)

Let us pray!
R.
P Lord of all holiness, God
of all peace, listen to our humble petitions and grant eternal
happiness in heaven to all those
you have redeemed through the
blood of Jesus, the proclaimer
and exemplar of the Beatitudes,
who lives and reigns for ever and
ever.
All Amen!

Preparation of the Gifts

P Pray, brethren. . .
All May the Lord accept the
sacrifice at your hands, for the
praise and glory of his name,
for our good and the good of all
his holy Church.

Prayer over the Offerings

P May these offerings we
bring in honor of all the Saints
be pleasing to you, O Lord, and
grant that, just as we believe the
Saints to be already assured of
immortality, so we may experience their concern for our salvation.
Through Christ our Lord.
All Amen!
Preface of All Saints
P It is truly right and just, our
duty and our salvation, always
and everywhere to give you
thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
For today by your gift we
celebrate the festival of your
city, the heavenly Jerusalem, our
mother, where the great array of
our brothers and sisters already
gives you eternal praise.
Towards her, we eagerly
hasten as pilgrims advancing
by faith, rejoicing in the glory
bestowed upon those exalted
members of the Church through
whom you give us, in our frailty,
both strength and good example.
And so, we glorify you with
the multitude of Saints and Angels, as with one voice of praise
we acclaim:
All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God
of hosts. Heaven and earth are
full of your glory. Hosanna in
the highest!
Blessed is he who comes in
the name of the Lord. Hosanna
in the highest!
Memorial Acclamation
P The mystery of faith!
All When we eat this Bread
and drink this Cup, we
proclaim your Death,
O Lord, until you come
again!

model of our sanctification. He is
the Lamb of God who takes away
the sins of the world. Blessed

my soul shall be healed.

of God. Blessed are they who

ALL SAINTS DAY:

THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF HOLINESS

very nation has its own heroes and heroines

outstanding citizens who have accomplished memorable
feats and remain an inspiration for all generations. A nation
needs these exceptions. But a nation needs also a much
greater number of ordinary citizens people who lead
a normal life, exercise their profession with honesty and
perseverance, pay their taxes and are law-abiding. It is of
this common stuff that great nations are made.
The Church has her heroes and heroines, too real
giants by all standards, who show what heights a human
being can reach in the practice of the virtues enshrined in
the Gospel and exemplified in Jesus Christ. The Church
needs these saints as much as a nation needs heroes and
heroines.
But the Church has also an immense number of
ordinary believers the common Christians whose
lives are characterized by an ordinary life, enlivened by
a simple, strong faith and a practical love for God and
neighbor. These are people from all walks of life, who fulfill
their duties day in, day out with dedication, honesty,
and generosity. They usually do not wear any special

habit or uniform; they share all the difficulties, worries

and uncertainties of all other human beings. Unlike many
others, however, they do not get drowned in the quagmire
of daily problems because they never lose sight of the
future of happiness, which God has in store for those who
live according to His law.
The life of these believers is by all standards ordinary
but by no means mediocre. They may occasionally be
weak, but are never resigned to be weaklings. They
readily grant that they dont have the stuff of the great
achievers (the canonized saints), but do not compromise
with evil, and never accept to be the perpetual losers in
their struggle against it.
This type of admirable ordinary Christians lives in our
communities, our neighborhood, our houses . . . . Heaven
is full of them! Todays feast in honor of the Unknown
Saints is both a reminder and an encouragement. It is
a reminder to admire and pay tribute to these unsung
heroes of Gods family on earth. But, most of all, it is an
encouragement to join their ranks and march with them
toward the homeland of heaven under the banner of the
Beatitudes. In other words, you and I are expected to be
like them, for all of us are called to live as children of light
and bear fruits that last unto life everlasting.
