Lesson 3: Technology: A boon or a Bane?

What blessings did the technology bring? What problems did technology
likewise bring? What is technology, good or bad?
In the 21st century, the technological advances has exploded. It is
obvious that schools have not been left out in these innovations, since
classroom technology such as internet, LCD projector, smart board, laptop, or
computer are present which makes a lesson more interesting, effective and
engaging to most students. Multimedia provides an interactive multisensory
learning experiences which motivates the learner and improves the quality of
learning (Sharp Vicky,2002)These uses allowed us to improved academically
and in school, such as programing , researching, problem-solving
and
communicating globally. According to a research, it is true that technology
increases the rate of reinforcement more than anything else we can compare it
to. Videogames has been known as a healthy outlet of aggression, or as an
overall stress relief. Also, we can create online communities through Social
Networking Sites, such as facebook, twitter, and Instagram to develop our
social growth as well. But,obviously basic manners, cherished values, and
etiquettes are the basic casualties of these innovations. So to speak, digital
literacy with its interdisciplinary nature , as a pedagogical approach in
curriculum design is very much needed, since its implementation can afford a
far-reaching advantages , for internet is both a source of information and
communication that has increased exponentially, internationally. Aside from
the fact that future educators must meet the unique needs of digital natives,
the teachers also need to teach through new methods to promote globalcompetitiveness among the learners. But, the fact that it can be a blessing or a
course then is a big challenge that we must face, towards the next generation.
Objectives:

To discuss the Dehumanization caused by the technology

To appreciate and understand the positive and negative effect of

Technology
To integrate the correct application of Technology in Education as
Future Educators

What is Technology?
We use technology to accomplish various tasks in our daily lives, in
brief; we can describe technology as products, processes or
organizations. We use technology to extend our abilities, and that makes
people as the most important part of any technological system
(http://www.useoftechnology.com/what-istechnology/)
Technology is dynamic; it keeps on improving because even our needs and
demands for technology keep on changing.

Educational technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning
and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate
technological processes and resources.

Heres a slide from slide share.com that talks about dehumanization of

technology

A study shows that :

College students are constantly glued to their smartphones: texting,
tweeting and
updating their statuses on Facebook.
The growing market of social media, smartphone apps and online
dating websites have sparked more research into the psychology of
technology use. About 500 million people use Facebook daily but some
research links the social media site with increased anxiety and
depression
(Study: Millennials find technology dehumanizing Cara Newlon, USA
TODAY College 8:58 p.m. EDT October 22, 2013 Millennials least
enthusiastic group about technology)
In Education it is a BANE when :

The learner is made to accept as Gospel truth information they get from
the Internet
The learner surfs the Internet for pornography
The learner has an uncritical mind on pages floating on televisions and
computers that represent modernity and progress
They makes the learner a mere spectator not an active participant The
learner gets glued to his computer-assisted instruction unmindful of the
world and so fails to develop the ability to relate to others
We make used of the internet to do character assassination of people
whom we hardly like
Because of our cell phone, we spend most of our time in the classroom or
in our workplace texting
We use overuse and abuse t v or film reviewing as a strategy to
kill
time

Negative Effects of Technology:

(Wikepedia.freeencyclopedia)

Invade peoples privacy

Promote irresponsible used of energy
Consumers lifestyle
Addictive
Sphere Elitism
Environmental waste

In Education it is a BOON when:

Classroom technology has become increasingly more popular. Each tool
provides teachers with a method in which they can actively engage their
students. These tools or devices are Internet, LCD Projector, Smart
Board, Laptop or Computer, Digital Camera, Tablets, etc. These can help
students to make lessons fun, interesting, and more effective.
Technology based learning and assessment systems will be pivotal in
improving student learning and generating data that can be used to
continuously improve the education system at all levels

The integration of technology in the instruction process must

geared towards:
(Corpuz et al,2008)
Interactive and meaningful learning
The development of creative and critical thinking
The development and nurturing of teamwork
Efficient and effective teaching

Things to Remember!
It is man who determines how technology ought to be used in order to
reap the maximum benefits that come along with technology.
When not used properly, technology becomes a detriment to learning and
development.
Digitality/Digitalism
is not a birth right , but instead a product of
cultural capital
Reactions(Corpuz et al,2008)
My wife and I talked more throughout the day because of instant
messaging. My communication with far-flung relatives is very much
enriched by it- R.K
How can computerized communication, in place of face-to-face family
communication and hugs , deepen dialogue? T.H.
Youre really seeing lots of positve things about everybody in your

network, that may not reflect reality very well.- Kross

I do feel like the more I used Facebook, probably the worse I feel. - Kelly
Stosch

Therefore; Technology is made for man and not man for technology.
Technology is made for the teacher and not teacher for technology
POST SCRIP
I recall at this point how I came up with the final manuscript of both my
Masters thesis and doctoral dissertation. Computers were rarity then so I had
type the final copy of my thesis and dissertation. In my haste, many times I
would not notice I would be typing beyond the margin or would commit
typographical error. To remedy, I had to repeat typing the page again. There
was no other recourse

Now with the computer, I may commit as many typographical error as I can
and I have not to re-do whole thing again. How convenient! What a liberation!
Technology can be fascinating and mind-boggling in what it can do. It
can bring distant places and people together , establishing invisible but
powerful connections. It can transform societies , economies, and
cultures by opening them up into other ideas and other options,
raising a new expectations and creating new needs. It can release and
rechannel previously unknown or wasted energies, into more productive
endeavours , allowing its users to pursue more creative goals. But the
fact remains that unless technology and all other agents and factors of
modernization are invested with human values and used for the social
good, then they will be a little more than expensive toys for the
amusement of a few.
(An excerpt from the speech delivered by His Excellency Pre. Fidel V. Ramos on
the 6th SEAMEO INNOTECH International Conference in Manila, Philippines

Famous quotation coming from well-known personalities
Technology or Perish John R. Pierce
All our technological progress, our civilization, is like the axe in the
hand of the pathological criminal-Albert Einstein
If there is a technological advance without social advance there is
almost automatically, an increase in human misery-Micheal
Harrington
(Corpuz
al,2008)
Mass media technology can lead to dangers of dehumanization
6 ways that human beings are treated mechanically (case student-learners)
1.
2.

5.

We turn them on and off whenever it suits our fancy

No explanation is offered on why and what they do.
Their plans and future are unheard
All work and no play
Their human worth is judged only by the quality of their products

6. Human empathy is absent (There is no feeling sorry for failures and

limitations).
Meanwhile, the teacher communicator can introduced humanism by:
1. Interaction between communicators/teacher and listener/student
2. Self evaluation or reflection by listener/student
3. Dialogue or interchange between the communicator and listener
Dehumanizing Effects
War and violence
Poverty
Sexploitatiin against women and children
Globalization-the process by which money, goods, information, and people
move across nations at a face and on a magnitude made possible by
rapid advances in communication and travel- is changing the face of
human societies, shattering cultures and social systems in much the
same way the industrial revolution and the expansion of trade.
Globalization has exacerbated the inequality between and with in
nations.
Cultures have undergone an erosion that has made it easy to pry people
loose from their land and their social relationship. This is partly due to
the pervasive influence of the mass media, notably the movies and
television whose portrayal of life in the modern world outside stirs the
curiosity of previous isolated Communities
