Romeo and Juliet come from, what we in the 21st century call it, a dysfunctional
family, this is the main cause of tragedy. Do you agree?
The resolution to tragic events have a tendency to create blame. In William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, two star-crossed lovers fall in love despite a century long family feud resulting in their deaths which is ultimately due to their dysfunctional families. The feuding families of Verona play a huge role in the deaths of the lovers as they provoked violence which escalates the feud rendering the families responsible for the lovers demise. Shakespeare explores the destructive power of violence however ultimately servers as a sense of rebirth. Furthermore, pressure exerted on Romeo and Juliet from their families also contributed to their downfall. Lastly, both families believed in fate which fundamentally prompted a lack of communication and advice from their parents consequently Romeo and Juliet paid the price. It is seen that there are many aspects which contributed to the casualties of Romeo and Juliet but subsequently their dysfunctional families is the main cause of the tragedy. With the imprudent actions and decisions from the heads of their respective families, Lord Montague and Capulet, this gave an uprising of violence which drove Romeo and Juliet to their tragic deaths. At the beginning, the chorus implies that the long-standing feud of the families will create new violence From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. This highlights how the continuance of their parents' rage could only be suppressed by the death of their children Romeo and Juliet Which, but their childrens end, naught could remove. Also, the gesture of thumb-biting illustrates the slow build-up of violence between the families. At the start of the play, Lord Montague requests for his long sword and Capulet demands his wife to let him go already demonstrates the escalating violence of the families. This is accentuated further by the infamous Act 3 Scene 1, where Mercutio and Tybalt are slain and Romeo is banished. This testifies how the tension between the already feuding families intensifies which ultimately disables Romeo and Juliet from meeting each other, influencing them to adopt precarious options which end in tragedy. Shakespeare condemns the way the families handled the situation by using violence which he highlights that it will bring rebirth as it is seen after the deaths of Romeo and Juliet the feud also dies allowing peace to return symbolising rebirth. Consequently, both dysfunctional families are the main cause of the tragedy as their choice as violence ends up separating the star-crossed lovers resulting in their use of treacherous plans to escape from Verona.
