Recommendation of

Finalists for MCC

Presidential Search

April 28, 2008

By,

President Daniel Elliott

Speaker Matthew Lawson
To Monroe Community College Board of Trustees Members,

This is the finalized report from the student constituency on the Brighton Campus. Please fully consider
this recommendation in making the difficult decision you have before you on such an important matter.

Process Overview

1. Brighton Campus Student Government and Damon City Student Events and Governance
Association met separately to create a list of questions to ask each candidate. The first five
questions asked were created from Damon Campus, and the remaining ten by Brighton
Campus, totaling fifteen questions.
2. The organizations would meet with each candidate individually, and have roughly one hour
with each candidate to ask these fifteen questions, and allow time for the candidate to ask their
own questions to the students.
3. Brighton Campus Student Government then met to discuss the candidates, listing all pros and
cons of each finalist. The organization then voted on what candidates would make appropriate
Presidents for Monroe Community College.
4. President Elliott, Speaker Lawson and Deputy Speaker Bickel of Brighton Campus Student
Government then created this report to be forwarded to the Board of Trustees.

After reviewing the process noted above, this is the final recommendation from the Brighton Campus
Student Constituency on the Presidential Search at Monroe Community College:

The Brighton Campus Student Constituency believes that the following candidates could
accomplish all tasks and challenges as the President of Monroe Community College:

 Dr. Laurence Spraggs

 Mr. Dennis Kessler

The Brighton Campus Student Constituency does not believe that Mr. William Smith has the
qualifications required to be the President of Monroe Community College.

The Rational for the student constituency decision is based on the qualifications set forth by the Monroe
Community College Board of Trustees. We feel that each of the candidates set forward by the students
meet all of the essential, and desired qualifications.

However, it is felt by the student constituency that Mr. William Smith does not meet the criteria set forth
by the Board of Trustees. The student constituency has created a list of justifications as to why we feel
this way:

Essential Qualifications not met by Mr. William Smith:

 A commitment to teaching excellence and student success: On questions relating to student

success, Mr. Smith was unable to elaborate on student success.

 A background of qualities, credentials and accomplishments evidencing strong leadership

ability and support of the teaching and learning process: Mr. Smith has no background or
experience in the teaching and learning process.

 A commitment to maintaining active involvement in the League of Innovation in the Community

College, the American Association of Community Colleges, and other educational associations
that reinforce the college’s quality and its national reputation: Mr. Smith did not seem
knowledgeable enough on national involvement.
Desired Qualifications not met by Mr. William Smith:

 A motivator and consensus builder with the ability to translate vision into ideas and ideas into
action: It is not felt that Mr. Smith would be able to gain to consensus of faculty, staff, and
students in implementing plans and campus policy.

 A commitment to the importance of the co-curricular program in a community college setting:

Mr. Smith did not appear to want to take an active role in the co-curricular program, but instead
toss the role onto other members of the college community.

This recommendation has the unanimous consent of the Brighton Campus Student Government
Association Senate, President, and Vice President. Please take this recommendation into full
consideration when making your decision of who the next President of Monroe Community College will
be. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
