Trump, Clinton descend on Iowa

By The Associated Press
DES MOINES, Iowa As
Hillary Rodham Clinton
walked among the booths of
funnel cakes and corn dogs at
the Iowa State Fair, trailed by
a massive pack of media and
onlookers, Donald Trumps
helicopter circled the fairgrounds in the air above.
Thats as close as Clinton
and Trumps massive entourages came at the state

Donald Trump

fair, a rite of passage for any

presidential candidate. The
respective Democratic and
Republican front-runners each
drew large crowds of gawkers as Clinton sampled a pork
chop on a stick and Trump
gave rides to children on his
helicopter emblazoned with
his famous last name.
Nice to be here! Clinton
said as she started an hourlong stroll across the fair-

grounds. Former Iowa Sen.

Tom Harkin, who endorsed
her this week and wore a straw
hat to shade him from the
blazing sun, accompanied her.
Everywhere Clinton walked,
large crowds followed her to
get a photograph, a handshake
or a quick hello.
Trump later made a grand
entrance, landing his helicopter in athletic fields about a
mile away and offering rides

to children before he came

onto the grounds. Almost immediately Trump was crushed
by massive crowds seeking
photos, handshakes and
yelling encouragement. The
pandemonium followed him
around for roughly an hour
and during a stop for a pork
chop on a stick.
This is beyond what I
expected. This is amazing,

Arts and Crabs Fest

The annual Arts and Crabs Fest brought hundreds of people to Burton Coliseum on Saturday.

Festival features
good music, food
By Mary Newport

mnewport@americanpress.com
The sixth annual Arts and Crabs Fest kicked
off at Burton Coliseum with some fast-paced folk
music by Thomas and Theresa, a mandolin and
guitar duo that serenaded attendees as they lined
up for food.
Thomas Townsley met Theresa Romero
through the St. Louis High School Band the summer of their sophomore year, and the two have
been playing together ever since. Their involvement with the Arts and Humanities Council of
Southwest Louisiana led them to become the
openers at Arts and Crabs.

The Jurassic Quest exhibit was oversold Saturday, so todays hours have been extended to 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Long lines of people waited
Saturday to get into the Civic Center for the exhibit. For more photos, see page A4.

Jurassic exhibit proves wildly popular

By Justin B. Phillips

jphillips@americanpress.com
In the middle of the Lake
Charles Civic Center on Saturday, Myles Simon, 6, found himself face to face with a Utahraptor a 25-foot carnivore from
the early Cretaceous period.
He stared at the dinosaur, and
it stared back. When he moved
closer, the dinosaur turned its
head and roared.
Myles was within inches of
the Utahraptor before he turned
to his mom, Erika, and smiled.

Myles was one of hundreds of

kids walking wide-eyed through
the Civic Center during Jurassic Quest, an interactive exhibit
featuring dozens of life-size, animatronic dinosaurs. The event
spilled out onto the grounds of
the Civic Center and featured
science stations, fossil digs, food
and inflatable bounce areas.
As Myles watched the dinosaur roar, turn and roar
again, his mom explained the
youngsters love for everything
Jurassic.
He has been fascinated by dinosaurs since he was a baby. He

sleeps with them, he plays with

them, he just loves everything
about them, Erika said.
The wait to get into Jurassic
Quest ranged from one to three
hours for those buying tickets at
the gate.
Midway through the days
activities, the Jurassic Quest
company announced the event
had been oversold. Online ticket
sales were stopped, and a limit
was placed on the number of
people entering the event each
hour.
Erika said she purchased her
tickets online in advance.

When it became apparent that my hearing was to the stage of choosing between hearing what the person was saying
and kn
knowing I was missing a lot, even with watching their lips, I knew it was time to get help. I had hearing aids that
were no
not sufficient. After being fitted with Miracle Ear ME 5200s, my hearing became much more important than having
people know I was wearing hearing aids. (Most people didnt notice at all.) I am happy that I can hear when people are
whispering and I can even understand what my Great Grandchildren are saying. B.C.

As the crowds continued

to pour into the Civic Center,
Myles attention moved on to the
other dinosaurs in the building.
Across the room, an Edmontosaurus was preying on another
dinosaur. Across from those, a
Velociraptor, a Triceratops and
an Albertosaurus all roared in
unison.
When asked which were his
favorite, Myles took a second to
think, then he responded simply:
The bigger ones.
Jurassic Quest hours were
extended today to 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
