Abstract
vGrid computing was born at a workshop called
"Building a Computational Grid", held at Argonne
National Laboratory in September 1997.

vFollowing this, in 1998, Ian Foster of Argonne

National Laboratory and Carl Kesselman of the
University of Southern California published "The
Grid: Blueprint for a New Computing
Infrastructure", often called "the Grid bible".

History Of Grid Computing
" Grid in Need is a Grid Indeed “

vInternet was one of ambitious networking project

of DARPA(US Military). Later this ambitious
project was accepted and used by many to form a
network of computers across the Educational and
research institutions .

vIts used for information exchange & browsing,

mail exchange and publishing, e-commerce and it as
a information highway of the current world.

History Of Grid Computing(Cont..)

vDue to broad acceptance of Internet by the community

across the world. So use the "Idle" Computers that are
connected to the Internet.

vIdle computers are the computers which are connected to

the net, but physically not doing any work or computation
and may be in screen saver mode running a screen saver.

v This opportunity gives the researchers in this area to use

the idle computers across the Internet for better use and
better cause which is beneficial to human kind and
technology. This area of research is called GRID computing.

The Motto of Grid Computing

vGrid Technology is evolving as the next generation

computing on the Internet. So one day we can all see that
using the bare bones of the computer without Hard disk,
RAM and processor, just plugging into the wall socket and
get the required resources for computing as we do it for
electricity

vThis is easy to say, but work done behind the background

is a mighty task which involves plan, design, integration,
security, abstraction, sharing of resources.

Grid Technology
SEMINOR TITLE: GRID TECHNOLOGY DATE:
Definition

vGRID is analogous to "Electrical Grid" in which

the world is connected to use it. We daily use
electricity irrespective of knowing where it is
generated, path from which the power has flown and
the source of it.

vThe infrastructure that makes this possible is

called "the Grid". It links together computing
resources such as PCs, workstations, servers, storage
elements, and provides the mechanism needed to
access them.

Grid Technology
SEMINOR TITLE: GRID TECHNOLOGY DATE:
What Is A Grid?
Although "the Grid" is still just a dream... grid computing
is already reality.

vThe Grid is be pervasive: remote computing resources

would be accessible from different platforms, including
laptops, PDAs and mobile phones, and you will simply
access the Grid through your web browser.

Resource sharing is the crux of grid philosophy - but grid

computing is not about getting something for nothing.

Grid Technology
SEMINOR TITLE: GRID TECHNOLOGY DATE:
Benefits
vGrid computing aims to involve everyone in the
advantages of resource sharing and the benefits of increased
efficiency.

vGrids give you shared access to extra computing power

vA grid can also give you direct access to remote software,

computers and data

vA grid can even give you access and control of remote

sensors, telescopes and other devices that do not belong to
you.

What is a Grid Computing

Grid Computing is an evolving network

application that can be expected to become an
essential and necessary component of the new
global knowledge economy of the 21st Century.

Grid computing is known by a variety of names,

including Utility Computing, Pay-As-You-Go
Computing, and Virtual Computing

Grid Technology
SEMINOR TITLE: GRID TECHNOLOGY DATE:
(Cont..)
vSecure access to shared resources is one of the
most challenging areas of grid development.
vTo ensure secure access, grid developers and
users need to manage three important things:
vAccess policy - What is shared? Who is allowed
to share? When can sharing occur?
vAuthentication - How do you identify a user or
resource?
vAuthorization - How do you determine whether
a certain operation is consistent with the rules?

Grid Technology
SEMINOR TITLE: GRID TECHNOLOGY DATE:
Security And Trust
vThe issue of security is linked to trust: you may
trust the other users, but do you trust that your data
and applications are securely protected on their
shared machines?
vWithout adequate security, someone could read
or modify your data - hence the warnings about
security when you use your credit card on the
Internet.
v The issue of security concerns all information
technologies and is taken very seriously.

Grid Technology
SEMINOR TITLE: GRID TECHNOLOGY DATE:
(Cont..)
vNew security solutions are constantly being
developed, including sophisticated data encryption
techniques. But it is a never-ending race to stay
ahead of malicious

vGrids allow you to efficiently and automatically

spread your work across many computer resources.
The result? Your jobs are finished much faster.

The below diagram shows how a more centralized
version of Grid Computing would operate. Notice
how individual workstations only have to have an
Internet supercomputers.

Problems
vGrid networks are used to compute extremely large data
sets. While defining what large means in respect to data sets
is continually evolving, there is an easy way to explain the
basic need.

vInstitutions that are currently working on cutting edge

research in physics, engineering, and medicine are required
to process huge amounts of data more quickly.

vMapping the human genome, developing a cure for

cancer, and engineering a full-scale model of astronomical
data are all examples of research that require the
management of vast quantities of datato individual
workstations

Most Benefit
vGrid Computing for consumers will be the
removal of IT hardware from the home. Most
computer users have no clue how their computers
work.

vGrid Computing could remove many of the

technological problems and much of the frustration
encountered by today’s users. With the computing
done outside of the home, technical problems can
more easily be resolved by IT professionals at the
location of the server.

End users would only need to know how to operate
their interfaces and interact with the middleware.
This is where the name Pay-As-You-Go
Computing was derived. Instead of buying all of
the computing power and licenses to software, end-
users would pay for applications, processing
power, and storage as a service.

Grid Technology

Advantages
vThe benefits that are typically achieved from
aggregating compute resources include:
* Reduced hardware and software costs.
* Reduced ICT complexity and systems
management costs.
* Increased end user productivity and
effectiveness.
* Accelerated time to market through increased
collaboration, faster computation and better quality
analysis

Applications
vSolve the problems which are beyond the scope of
single processor.
vUniversities and research lab for project that require
high performance computing applications.
vIn software industry.
vOn the internet.
vNational Grid Proves to be a Powerful Tool for
Biomedical Research:
The National Grid Office of Singapore will also be
launching another project to use grid resources for
molecular modelling in drug screening for anti-cancer
targets

Conclusion
vGrid Computing is a technology that is bound to
emerge in our society. Whether or not economic, cultural,
or regulatory concerns allow for centralized computing to
come to fruition, the currently available forms of Grid
Computing can be expected to continue to expand.
vThe outlook for Grid Computing entering the corporate
markets is already strong and may soon be adopted on a
wide scale. [7] The reason for this is pure necessity. For
large conglomerates to stay competitive they will have to
be able to process huge amounts of data.
vThe easiest and most cost effective way of doing this is
through Grid Computing.
