In my opinion, fanfiction books are the most interesting books we can read.
What else could a teenager read, if not a book for teenagers? There are a great
number of such books, and I will try to tell you about the one I loved the most.
What do you think about when you hear the title Looking for Alaska? Well, I
thought about the country, and not at all about such a different and special
character as Alaska. So, I will tell you about her story:
Looking for Alaska is a bildungsroman, a story about the life of a group of
teenagers: Miles (Pudge - as his friends called him - an ironic nickname, because
he was very thin), Alaska, Chip (the Colonel), Takumi and Lara; a story about their
joys and hopes, about regrets and disappointments, about secrets and dreams.
I didnt really know what to expect when I started to read the book. As the title
suggests, the story is focused on Alaska Young, a character who is supposed to
disappear one way or another, and the others are trying to find her. I didnt realize
from the beginning about what kind of disappearance is all about, until the moment
Alaska really disappeared, leaving behind questions whose answers, her friends are
trying to find.
The main character is Miles Halter, a lonely teenager, with a normal and boring
life from his point of view, passionate about the last words of famous celebrities,
before they drew their last breath. He decides to go to the boarding school Culver
Creek in search of his own "Great Perhaps". There, he discovers the value of
friendship and of a friend, he encounters new experiences - some of them pleasant
and others tragic, and also, he learns the meaning of love, of gaining and losing a
dear person.
Although Miles is the main character, the one who fascinated me throughout the
novel is the enigmatic Alaska Young. Its difficult to speak about Alaska because of
her changings of mood - sometimes she is happy and good-humored, and other
times, she is serious and grave. After finding the story of Alaska and her friends, I

see her differently, less impulsive. How will I ever get out of this labyrinth? is
the question that preys on her mind, and which Miles understands much later.
The novel is divided in two parts: Before and After, which are linked by
Alaskas disappearance.
During the second part, Alaskas friends are trying to find clues, to put things
together, to use any memory or detail in order to draw a conclusion, hoping it
could better explain what really happened.
The book is not only addressed to teenagers, but also to any reader interested in
a good story that makes us meditate about our life issues.
As far as Im concerned, the story has made me laugh and cry, but especially
made me want to read more. This is why I recommend you with all my heart to
read this book, and also other fanfictions.
