To the Secretary,
Re. Support for P1anning Application- New Children' s Hospital (PA 0043)

I am writing on behalf of the Neonatal Clinical Advisory Group, RCPI to express support for the
planned development of the new children's hospital (PA0043) as set out on www.nchplanning.ie
We have discussed this development on many occasions, within the Clinical advisory group and
support it for the following reasons, namely:

The new children's hospital will facilitate through the national model of care for paediatrics
the enhancement and development of neonatology seNices not only within Dublin but
nationally. We would like to comment on some salient features which will markedly improve
the care of the complexly ill new born infant.
The plans for the intensive care floor in the new build incorporating a dedicated Neonatal
Intensive care Unit should enable the provision of Neonatal care for the complexly ill newborn
both medical and surgical to the highest international standards. This is a new development in
Neonatology in Ireland. This unit will give flexibility in levels of care to include Intensive and
high dependency for infants within the unit. The NICU should not be seen in isolation but will
have a pivotal role within the national model of care for Neonatology, working in conjunction
with the other Neonatal units providing varying levels of special care, high dependency and
intensive care in the other Maternity and Paediatric hospitals in Ireland.
The new childrens hospital will also seNe as the hub for the National Neonatal transport team
which will have facilities on-site, improving transport nationally for newborn infants.
Consideration has been given for future expansion and for critical clinical adjacencies within
the site essential to the functioning of the neonatology and paediatric seNices for our
patients.

.. .

The present neonatology specialist services within the City of Dublin will be integrated in a
single service offering a more seamless service to Children and Families, thus providing better
care for complex conditions in conjunction with other specialities, made possible by this
hospital development.
