Procedures

Check each point off as you do it

1. Use a prewriting technique to gather ideas. The more ideas you gather the easier it will be to
write the essay.
2. Guided by the ideas you have, write a thesis statement. This statement should broadly include
the main reasons you will give to support your position. You may change this statement later.
3. Arrange the ideas in a plan or outline. The lack of a plan or outline can limit your success in
producing a good essay.
4. Write, revise, and rewrite. Review the information on iLearn.
5. Guided by the comments you receive from your peers, revise on your own, ask another peer to
read your essay and give additional comments, or visit the Writing Center.
6. Upload the final draft on November 12 by 3 PM; the essay must also be dropped in iLearn Safe
Assignment.
Late assignments will be penalized if they are accepted.

*IMPORTANT
Major revising of drafts of this essay will be done during designated computer lab times, during
normal class hours, and on your own time. Failure to comply with this combination of process-based
writing tasks (for example: skipping labs and classes and instead turning in one final essay version
essay without ever letting me see it beforehand) will result in a significant reduction of the grade the
essay would have received. In other words: Do not bother handing in a paper if you choose to miss
or disregard the labs and in-class writing tasks.
After each lab you will make a printout of whatever you have produced up to that day; I may ask you
to hand it in, or I may just check it and initial it. Either way, you must have proof of the work you have
been doing on this essay. You will eventually have a stack of drafts, notes, outlines, and more. Do not
throw any of these items away. Be sure to retain them, because I can ask to see them at any time.
Also, save all printouts (or digital copies in a file) of abstracts from articles you have used for your
essay in case I need to view them. If you are unable to produce all of the notes and abstracts, it will
result in a reduction of the final grade on your essay.
