Gateways to the South

Awards were presented Saturday October 10, at the
Southern Arts Societys annual Gateways to the South
art competition and exhibit. Featured prominently in the
exhibit are landscapes, historical sites, and the people
and places that reflect our Southern history and culture.
Local artists have entered fifty works of art in this
years show. Judge for the exhibit was Edward J. Burnam
Jr., a contemporary fine artist, currently teaching at
Central Piedmont Community College, in Charlotte North
Carolina. Mr. Burnam selected first, second, third place
awards along with three merit awards.
First Place went to Ellen
Devenny for her photograph
titled Old South. Mr.
Burnam choose her work for
the excellent technique in
the development process.
The photo brings a historical
perspective to a
contemporary time and space.
Second Place went to James L. Norman for his oil
painting titled Black Field
Rain. The impasto works
well in suggesting an
atmosphere clouded by
morning dew. The house
is unbalanced and sets a
mood complimented by
the red dash. It feels
as if I am looking into a
past that is unresolved and ephemeral said Mr. Burnam.
Third Place went to Allegra Klett Wilson for her
mixed media piece called Rejoice.
Mr. Burnam
describes his choice The simplicity of this work gives me
a feeling that a more rural,
less formal discipline was
applied by the artist. The
work is appealing to me
based on its honest
uncontrived representation
of very strong southern
symbols. This piece really
feels like it captures the
south to me in such an innocent way.
Merit awards went to Ashley Pardue for Angel Oak
photography, to Paul Shafranski Dreamer pen and ink,
and Lori McAdams for Art Tradition scratch board.
The Gateways exhibit runs thru Nov 13 in the Reavis
Gallery.
