Nehruvian
Legacy
Revisited

t. Jawaharlal Nehru was an

extraordinary giant of Indian freedom
struggle, a builder of modern India, a great
believer of pluralism, and the chief architect
of democratic, socialist and secular ethos of
India. These were intertwined with science,
technology and innovation in his scheme of
things. His artistry in crafting and building a
new nation from the older one marred by
orthodoxy, hierarchy and the wreckage of a
decaying empire was remarkable.
There are many who say that the open,
civilized and democratic political system
India has today is premised on the three
principles institutionalized by Nehru in the
socio-political fabric of India liberalism,
secularism and pluralism. Probably there
could have been no better alternative to the
Gandhi-Nehru framework of the Indian
body politic.
Nehru instilled democratic values in India.
He cherished and strengthened democracy.
His commitment to democracy was
reected in the respect he showed to
Parliament, the Opposition, independence
of the Judiciary, free and fair elections and
freedom of the Press. Underlying this
institutional machinery was the value
system of Gandhi, based on communal

emancipation of the downtrodden. It was
because of the secular construct of state
policy envisaged by Nehru that the 'rule of
law' was established and religious
fundamentalism kept away from sabotaging
politics.

Political Science of Bangalore University

intends to utilize the occasion by organizing
a National Seminar on the theme,
'Nehruvian Legacy Revisited'. The major
sub-themes that have been identied are as
follows:

Today, when the Nehruvian ideals and

institutions are under threat, it is more
important than ever to re-examine the vision
of this founding father of modern India. It is
imperative to re-read him, to understand his
'Idea of India', and to analyze the strength of
his convictions which kept this large,
diverse and divided country together.

Nehruvian vision of Secularism

Most of the challenges the country faced

during the Nehruvian era still persist. Can
we say the same of the values and ethos that
helped Nehru address those challenges?

Nehru and foreign policy: National

The younger generation must know and

understand the ideals, the values and the
vision that went into the making of this
nation. During these troubled times, it is
important to contest the singularity of the
Indian identity, assert the importance of
relegating religion to private space, and reestablish secularism, liberalism and
pluralism as the fundamental principles of
the Indian polity.
The 126th birth anniversary of Jawaharlal
Nehru is a good occasion to revisit the
Nehruvian legacy. The Department of
